- Parody films often come about because of a consistent trend in cinema. All the airport and plane movies in the 70's lead to Airplane. The success of Top Gun in the 80s gave us Hot Shots. And on the horror side, nothing was more successful in the 90s than Scream. So, of course, the Wes Craven/Kevin Williamson classic would be a prime candidate for the same treatment. What followed was a pop culture milestone that spawned a slew of imitators. We're getting into all of the horror movies targeted as we Revisit Scary Movie!

The magic of Scary Movie is it actually works as a movie if you take out the spoofs; it’s a legit murder mystery with a twist. Most later parody movies have no actual plot, NOTHING to them without scene to scene parodies.
A lot of parody movies tried to imitate “Scary Movie” and just never captured the magic of “Scary Movie” because it came out at the right time and it had a flowing narrative 😊😊

The best parody movies are the ones that could have been used to make a non parody movie themselves.
It’s also funny as fuck and still holds up.
Just like The Naked Gun movies. There's a lot of hilarious jokes, but people forget there's also a legit story being told. It's not just Leslie Nielsen being deadpan for 90 minutes while goofy stuff happens around him. Later Leslie Nielsen parodies didn't get that, and just went for non-stop jokes and spoofs with no real focus.
SCARY MOVIE and it's sequel worked because of the Wayans brothers' involvement. Buffy's exaggerated death was hilarious.
Fun fact about Buffy’s death: There was a different version of her death with alternate and extra dialogue and a scene where she is gutted.
Scary Movie is a spoof masterpiece. I can watch it anytime and still laugh alot. Everytime Ive watched Scream since Scary movie came out I always find myself disappointed expecting certain scenes that never arrive only to realise they were actually in Scary movie.
Scary movie 2 is easily my favourite in the series.

What I really like about the first Scary Movie is how, for the most part, the actors are acting. Like when they're not telling a goofy joke, they give actual emotion.

Cindy getting stuck to the ceiling was hilarious. I was surprised how much got passed the MPAA guidelines for an R rating
Thanks to Scary Movie causing a mad dash for other spoof movies, I will say, it did allow 'Not Another Teen Movie' to be made. Which I say spoofed the genre so good, it became a great Teen Movie on its own and holds up.
I swear Doofy is the best part of this film, and I wish so bad he could’ve come back in the sequels
Scary movie was the first film I saw High. The opening scene with Carmen Electra was pure bliss. I will never forget those days with my friends. the early 00's were the best. Sadly, I don't think we are going to see comedy like this for a while.
Cindy's fro-below "Poofing" out is one of the most memorable pieces in the annals of cinema
Imagine if the duet brings back Marlon Wade, cindy, and Brenda as a take on the legacy sequels and they get the Waynes Brothers to write them
Scary Movie 1&2 were comedy classics!
OMG, the first Scary Movie is so funny, and has tons of quotable lines. Among my favorite:
“Hmmm, ketchup, just like my mom puts on her spaghetti, baby.”
“Kitty, you scared me! Whoa! Horsie, you scared me, too!” 🐱🐎
Back when parody had wit with a nice touch of crudeness. Once we got into the epic, date, and other copy and paste "movies" it all just became Family Guy cutaways and CZcams shorts in quality.
You actually had to have seen each film to understand the parodies. In this age, that wouldn’t be as easily accomplished since entertainment is so saturated nowadays
My grandma bought me a vhs tape of it from Walmart. I was definitely way to young to have seen it. Lol. Miss you Grandma.
Best part of the movies are the subtle jokes written in the backgrounds. Ex: the police station there’s a sign that says “Serve and Protect. Shoot to kill!”😂

My wife and I quote this movie to death. I can't watch Scream anymore without making a reference to Scary Movie.
If they do it right and don't make it PC like most movies now. Also, what made most spoofs of the past so funny was that the creators used dramatic actors to play the parts seriously and didn't hire comedians. The hilarity was in the lines and what was happening in the background. Leslie Nielson was a dramatic actor who never did comedy, but after Airplane became the king of the spoofs. Comedians try to play it funny and sometimes it is, but mostly it's just cheesy, but drama actor playing it deadpan and their lines coming out with all seriousness is what made it so funny.
I had so much regret asking my dad to take me to see this when I was 11! I remember him saying maybe not because it was rated R but I said my mom let me watch R at home so it was no big deal. I did the stupid kid thing and pretended to be asleep when the movie was over.
The second movie I remember seeing in the cinema where no one under 18 could see it; and there were employees at the screening room door checking IDs.
I kind of wish it was like that where I saw it. I saw *Scary Movie* with my parents, not realizing how raunchy it was going to be, and it was one of the most awkward moments of my life.
Normally the Ticket seller checks your ID before you buy a Ticket.

One of the first movies I was ID checked, and since I was under 18, and I didn't want to look too stupid, I ended up buying a ticket for the perfect storm instead.
The first time the watched that with my cousins we were dying of laughter!

Scary Movie is a classic😊. I hope in Scary Movie 6, they will bring back Anna Faris and Regina Hall to parody Scream again because we’re in an era of nostalgia❤❤❤. If they parody Scream and bring back Doofy, Scary Movie 6 will be a behemoth in the box office , just like the first one!
We're in an era of poorly crafted nostalgia-bait cashgrabs...because nowadays hollywood is mostly untalented, uncreative, half-witted, and afraid to take risks with new ideas. Most of the movies coming out this year are either prequels, sequels, reboots or some other spin-off 'universe'. I have zero faith in another sequel, even if they get some of the cast back.
Given that Scary Movie is getting a reboot, I think this revival will parody horror reboots such as Screams 5 or 6 being the main focus with some elements from Child's Play and It.
It was one of the first DVDs I bought.
Everybody loved it. And the movie wouldn´t have been perfect without the fart jokes and the Shorty character...I hated him. If they´ve taken those things it would have been perfect.

Scary Movie is hilarious. The sequels got worse as each one was released, I can’t imagine how bad 6 will be, unless the Wayans Bros come back

Yeah I watched Scary Movie before seeing most of the movies it parodied. Not knowing the context didn't ruin the movie, it made I feel all the mote random amd hilarious. The first few absolutely worked because they knew how not to run jokes into the group and give breathe room in between. Ever since David Zucker got on board, it just went downhill.
My 13 year old self definitely snuck into this at the theater. Also Wasssssssssuppppppp must of been said atleast a million times by all of us

Funny! Worthy parody of 90's slasher! They need to parody legacy sequels or reboots but it definitely needs to go back to being Rated R!
We really need a scary movie requel that goes back to the original. With spyglass churning out more scream films, it would be the perfect time. Bring back all the original cast including gale hailstorm.

Just recapping somenof the gags made me laugh out loud.
My only issue with the Scary Movie films is that most new audiences will have seen the parody before seeing the original film thus robbing the originals of their horrorific bite. And if they do make a requel, bring back the Wayans and Brenda!

I always thought Buffy Gilmore was a combination of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (correct) and Gilmore Girls which had come out a year prior to this

Scary movies 1,2 and 3 are all hilarious and quotable. I was surprised that i actually think 3 is the funniest despite the pg13 rating-- i was born in 1990 and scary movie 1 was one of those movies you and your friends would sneak watch at night being only 10 years old
Definitely! I loved scary movie, had all of them as a kid. Also the others, but they weren't really funny and the "parodies" didn't really make sense.

Friedberg and Seltzer completely destroyed the parody/spoof genre. If the Razzies were relatively serious and relevant, they would award these two morons with a lifetime achievement award for the total obliteration of the art of comedy in cinema.
Scary Movie 1+2 really good Scary Movie 3 fine. Scary Movie 4 Mid Scary Movie 5 absolute Garbage.

But there’s one single reason why every spoof movie turned into white bread comedy, that just didn’t come off as funny at all, with all the succeeding “movies” after Scary Movie 1 and 2.
The Wayans Brothers made the first two, and white “dad humour” writers wrote every other “movie” afterwards.

I didn't know anyone who didn't resonate on some level with this movie from a comedic perspective. At the time Wayans were coming a few years off of Don't Be a Menace etc similar comedy vibes. At 42 you had to be around 17-18 at time you didn't find any of the jokes funny in the 1st movie? You dislike it enough to call the 1st the worst movie of all time. What happened in high school?Scary Movie 3 and 4 were terrible
