@@redstripezoom8856 So? Doesn't really qualify it as a masterpiece along with The March Of The Black Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody and Innuendo. I assume OP mentioned those three songs as Queen's three major operatic epics. Untitled isn't an operatic epic. It's a hidden track of ambient music. It barely even qualifies as a song. I'm not hating on the track, it's very relaxing to hear and bittersweet after hearing the last recordings of Freddie on Made In Heaven, but it's by no means an operatic epic.

Freddie is from Zanzibar and he went to boarding school in India, so he lived in a very different culture than the one he ended up in when he moved to England when his family had to flee from a revolution in Zanzibar. So Freddie himself, knew personal prejudice and political persecutionin his life. Roger wrote this with Freddie and Roger does not shy away from speaking out when he thinks something needs to be said. As a band, Queen chose to not be a political force, but a source of entertainment so this song kind of pushes the edges of the envelope for them but the entertainment value of the video really does rein it all back into a form of entertainment but with a purpose.

Freddie sang this pretty much on his death bed. Still sang the hell out out it along with many great songs on this 1991 album before he died like "The show must go on" and "These are the days of our lives" and others. Defiant queen till the day he died. Legend

  • @susieq7401
    @susieq7401 Před 3 lety +92

LFR Jojo - I think your reaction was wonderful, two parts in particular.
First, when you said Freddie is like an actor. He was. A true performer. He took on the persona of the song like a great actor does a role. He poured his heart and soul into every song and knew exactly the emotion, tone, feeling and quality to use in his voice that told us how we were to feel about any given song be it a serious one like this or a playful one like "Seaside Rendezvous" or "Brighton Rock". That was his mastery and why no one else can ever sing or interpret Queen's songs the way he could.
Secondly, yes, the whole band was interested in different cultures and musical styles, particularly Freddie (opera and classical), and all four incorporated those interests into their songs. This song incorporates several styles. The military drum at the start reflects parts of the song that talk about the violence of the human race. Spanish guitar. Folk dancing. The song connects all the people of the world and their histories. It is universal.
An innuendo is a hint or suggestion and often a disparaging, negative one. He asks the listener to pardon his innuendo that humans are often their own worst enemies because they follow, greed, false religions and race and says IF there is a god in the sky, unmask your face and do something about it. He is at times discouraged by the human race and the grief we inflict on ourselves yet knows we have to "keep on trying". This is even more personal and introspective because at this time he knew he was dying.
There is so much thought put into this song about Freddie's own personal questions about life and humanity. This is a classic song of despair but lifted up at the end by hope....we have to keep on trying.
Thank you for your reaction. This song must be better known. It's message is vital and always pertinent.

Such a powerful and eerie song on the last album released before he died. Radio and disco DJs pre-ordered the song en masse and helped it get to #1 in the UK before ever hearing it - and I'm pretty sure they were hoping for something else. Not exactly the dance pop thing they were expecting at 6 minutes 32 seconds. But it is a great, great work of art.
The "hint" was his coming death. Many of the songs on the album "Innuendo" sounded quite differently a some 9 months after its release when Freddie died.

Phenomenal! Queen's music is always full of surprises and they bring something to the table to satisfy every sense! Not only are they a band of transcendent geniuses, but of deep thinkers that border on (if not totally) philosophical! For the video each member of the band was illustrated in homage to a different artist or artistic style: Freddie Mercury in homage to Leonardo Da Vinci, Brian May after victorian etchings, John Deacon in homage to Picasso and Roger Taylor after Jason Pollock.

while we humans have our flaws & shortcomings

we have also the potential to be better

The song isn't really political because Freddie didn't like to write political songs. The lyrics were written by Freddie but completed by Drummer Roger Taylor. The best explanation for the song's meaning is that we as humans are constantly looking to find meaning in things which the song deems as irrelevant and unimportant to our conscious and building up our ego.

This song was partially inspired by “Kashmir,” one of Led Zeppelin’s signature songs as well as Freddie's illness. The song initially came out of a jam session in Switzerland amongst Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon in spring 1989. They later played it for Freddie, who loved it who added his own flair to the initial structure and expanded the scope making it a truly Queen composition.
Basically, It deals with mankind’s inability to live with each other and a constant search for meaning.

On a lighter note watch the making of one vision. See how the boys put a song together. Plus some good laughs.

Great reaction! You have done many Queen reactions, but Queen has about 200 songs, around 64 of those songs made it onto the charts. So there is always a lot of songs to explore, you do a good job!. Maybe you can check out one of Freddie's first epic song that he wrote, My Fairy King czcams.com/video/VeVjEg4znQk/video.html. This song also has a much darker undertone.

This album was Freddys swansong. He knew he was dying and kept recording until the very end.
The man was a force of nature, and the world became much darker without his light.

You called the majority of it. The "hint/innuendo" was how human nature is and how we'll keep on trying to better it but still failing at it. The references of the lyrics here:
"While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand
While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land
While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow
Till the mountains crumble into the plain"
Those things suggest time. We generally think these things will be forever; even mountains standing tall indefinitely.
    The second verse:
"While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons and on and on"
    The third verse:
If there's a God or any kind of justice under the sky
If there's a point, if there's a reason to live or die
Ha, if there's an answer to the questions we feel bound to ask
Show yourself destroy our fears release your mask
Oh yes, we'll keep on trying
    Hey, tread that fine line
    (Yeah) yeah
    We'll keep on smiling, yeah
    (Yeah) (yeah) (yeah)
And whatever will be will be
    We'll just keep on trying
    We'll just keep on trying
    Till the end of time
    Till the end of time
    Till the end of time
This is very much suggestive of the ills of humanity. All of these things have had humanity kill, rule and keep caste systems in the name of have and have nots and it's been this way for a loooooooong time. When we try to deviate from these actions, we get blips of time of togetherness and humanity but then draw right back into the same ills; trying time and time again to do better. Then there's the petitioning of God, if He's behind some curtain, to show Himself/Itself to take away these fears we humans have of each other and the unknown. It just seems it'll never happen in anyone's timeframe. Thus, the end of time.
You were right that this song is deep. I listen to it almost everyday as a balm to understand the complexities of what it is to be human. It's saddening, maddening and it also brings a calm in the understanding that other humans see humans the way I do.
Well, that's just my 2 cents anyway.
    Good day, sir.

Hey Jojo, long time subscriber - first time commenting - love your Queen videos buddy, keep 'em coming. Wouldn't worry too much about trying to figure out the messages in Queen's songs as it's what *you* take from the lyrics that count :) I know you love some Brian May cuts, so you should check out the FAST version of We Will Rock You - it was used as an opener for the live shows and the only studio version was recorded at a BBC radio session - please, react to this raw as hell bad ass version!: czcams.com/video/Ekm6WtKwQos/video.html
