    I still don’t think the Volca Drum is my thing but this is definitely the most compelling video I’ve seen of it. I love seeing people have fun and doing cool things with gear that doesn’t work for me. Always nice to see other perspectives

      Yeah it's definitely not for everyone, but it can be a very fun and useful tool!

    I took drum lessons for over 10 years before getting into synthesisers.
    The best part about the volca drum for me is the tactile manipulation of drums/percussion timbre. It's so fun. From my experience, using a DAW with samples makes this task cumbersome because of the point and click mouse usage. Sometimes I'll lay in bed, building a new kit. After months of playing around with 1 bar patterns, I'm probably going to start backing up kits on the computer and chaining programs together for longer patterns.
    If you want to use this with a DAW it's perfect, just send MIDI out and change the sounds with your fingers. Ideal middle ground. Layer samples on top for further complexity.
    Another thing I do is set up pentatonic tones, have a few of them choke each other, and create a hierarchy of probability of playing. You get to control the level of randomness and just let it run!

    I didn’t know how capable these things were compared to the volca beats until I watched this, I’m definitely ordering one right away. I just love the versatile and crazy sound this thing is capable of.

    Well you did it. You made me buy one :D I'm growing into it as I learn each feature and I absolutely *love* the size, light weight and portability of this thing. Just the Volca drum, a Zoom H2 and a pair of headphones and you can just go outside and jam for a bit. Good stuff.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety +6

      I LOVE the Tonic, but the Volca Drum is on a whole different level. Even with the Microtonic software added in, the flexibility of the sequencer on the VD is miles ahead.

    Own a snare modded Volca Beats which I sync with a PO 12 just to layer the bass drum. I'd love one of these but wonder if a Volca Kick might be more useful for my purpose. Or downloading the Microtonic vst (AUS $99 I think) and a free DAW and synching the PO Tonic instead. Actually my guy could mod the Beats or Drum to get individual kick out so I could put that through a cheap distortion pedal - more warranty voiding. Ha. So much GAS, not enough cash.
    Thanx for the demo Free Beat. That is some impressive hardware. Never miss your daily posts. Always informative for me making electronic music on a budget.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety +1

    • @FreeBeat
