This is the best introduction to Volca drum by far! Korg should hire you!
Owning a Minilogue, Opsix and Wavestate I never considered the Volca series but thank to your tutorial(s) I've just ordered this very Volca Drum. Cannot thank you enough for the inspiration...
Even in lockdown, I never spent as much time with the volca drum as I should have! This video is the kick up the ass I need, many thanks excellent reference video!!!🙏🏽👍🏽🇬🇧
I don't own all the Volca's but out of the many I do own this one along with the FM, Nubass, and the Drum do I want to own both of but I digress; this is the one I've been most addicted to in regards to finding the right tutorials on CZcams, experimenting with to discover some secrets (I know something about the wave guide I believe most people don't know about), and locking down how to really create dual sounds through the part layers. It's a very inexpensive and powerful piece of gear I think any electronic music producer should own (along with the FM). It's also the sexiest of all the Volca's.
Just got my vdrum a couple hours ago and was getting disappointed with the workflow and more specifically not understanding it. This video helped so much, you really make great tutorials. I felt like i knew what to do as you were teaching it, even started understanding more stuff just from the understanding i got from this first part. You are a natural teacher, its a shame you never got into education as a career because some people have a natural ability to teach and youre one of them. I cant thank you enough as you made my new purchase way more exciting and satisfying without any of the frustration i was having just trying to use it based off the manual. I'll be doing part 2 tomorrow after work when i can get some real time on it, cant wait. Subbed. Thank you again😊
Thanks so much for your kind words. I have worked as a teacher a lot during my life though, hahaha. I'm not trained as a teacher but I do enjoy sharing what I've learned. Thanks for the sub. Visit my other videos and let me know if you find something you like.
This guide was great man, thank you. I've been window shopping this for a few days and, even as an electronic musician myself, hardware can always be challenging to learn quickly so this was much appreciated. Also I'm from the US and a native English speaker and your English is amazing, no need to apologize at all. You speak English better than native speakers that I know haha
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. Wish there were a lot more tutorials like this because when I look these things up, youtubers are always talking as though they expect me to know how to operate one of these things and I know literally nothing about it
Awesome time listening to you man and playing with my Volca Drum at the same time. At the end I spent like 4 hours until I finish it XD. Keep going helping us "the helpless people" cheers!
thank you so much - the layer concept was, for some reason, really confusing me and my trying to muddle through was getting nowhere, this has really helped.
Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. It is very much appreciated as I have just got a Volca Drum for Christmas and no idea until now. The list of other tutorial links is also appreciated but I will get onto your Part 2 first 🙂 👍
Just got my Volca Drum and the learning curve was an absolutely joy with your tutorial. Thanks a lot for this, now I´m gonna continue with 2nd part. Cheers from Argentina.
Just bought one, because I was thinking I could really use a drum machine, with which I could get creative and wouldn't be just another 808 or Volca Beats. Went for this one and as soon as I got into the manual...a lot of language which is hard to understand, no basic explanation on how to control it. You're a savior with this vid. I can't thank you enough.
Absolutely brilliant getting started guide. Super simple, goes far beyond the manual and is really concise. Thank you so much for taking the time to put it together. You've saved us all hours of running into dead-ends and having to back-track. The only thing missing was the select/parameter knob and its implications for the screen. Assuming that's all in part 2 - which'll have to wait for tomorrow. Great job! Your english is excellent by the way.
I might be late to the party, but this is a brilliant video. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all the details of this awesome device. Two thumbs up!
Hey This River, this was so useful. Very clear and simple tutorial to get started with the Volca Drum, just got mine a couple of days ago and had a hard time figuring out some functions. I wish your audio quality was better but just turning the volume up solved the issue. Thanks and keep it coming.
Thank you so much for the great explanation as to how this gizmo works. I just picked one up yesterday. Also, your English is incredibly good. Well done.
Thank you you made me keep my volca drum I'm very impatient and I'm learning I need to spend more time with my gear I've been making music for 15 years so I'm not just a guy who buys gear and doesn't use it but this one takes a little bit of digging into so thank you for the video I'm keeping it now
Fantastic tutorial! Your explanations are concise and easy to comprehend. Also, your English is excellent. As a matter of fact, your English is better than some English speaking people I know. 😅 Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 😏 👊🏽
Thanks for making this video. Appreciate you going slowly. As you said already, a lot of these You Tubers make videos like all of us are experts at this already. Nice beginner tutorial. 👍
Great tutorial and I love that you understand that others move too fast through the buttons. Best 30 minute investment for this Volca. I will be watching part 2. Your English is great; I thought maybe you were from Quebec or something.
Klasse! Die mit Abstand beste Anleitung im Internet. Vielen herzlichen Dank! Wirklich großartig gemacht mit viel Gespür für die Nutzer. Ist ein zweiter Teil geplant?
Excellent introduction! I just got mine and from all the tutorials I have already watched, this was my go to first guide to start fiddling with this thing. The others were good too but they were advanced and mostly helped me decide to buy the VOLCA DRUM because they showed its potential. So thank you so much!!!
Muchas gracias!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this. For whatever reason, I was really struggling to learn the interface on this thing and, like you, the other videos I found seemed a bit more advanced and I couldn't keep up. This is great!

I love the volca drum but ur the first one that I understood how to edit parts separately, now I'm gunna be able to design my drums better now thank you very much😃
Hey Claudia, I'm glad it was helpful. For parts 2, 3 to 100 go to the links I pasted on the video details. I selected the best Korg Volca Drum tutorials for you. Make sure you got to Oscillator Sink's Synthmata.com page. That's where you will fully understand the architecture of the volca drum.
Merci , Gracias, Thank you so much! I am an amateur guitarist who is starting drumming (acoustic) and composing and this thing seems like a great tool with many applications. Your video is really helpful. Cheers!
Good video, it takes awhile to get the hang of this device. When you're editing one of the layers and trying to determine what the factory setting was for a particular parameter (Level, for example), if you turn the knob very slowly you will see a "-" dash to the right of the number, which indicates that is the factory setting. You can do this to find out all the settings except the 3 SRC, MOD and EG parameters which if you change you have to re-load the kit to see what they were before. Also, this functionality is hard to use because the dash only displays for 1 second (arghh!), but it's the only way you can know for sure what a setting was when the kit was last stored, I've used it quite a bit. I think this was in Undulations' series. Nice job!
Yeah that ever elusive dash! it helps a lot, it will also show you where you left your own saved parameters. The best tool by far to look at parameters on the Volca is Oscillator Sink's SYNTHMATA page (free volca drum editor). Check it out, he's got a video here on YT showing how it works.
@@thisriver I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying to get the "dash setting" for a particular parameter, Part 5 on Kit 4 for example (Layer 2 to be exact, the default Level on Layer 1 is 0 so only Layer 2 is audible), how do they do that wobble? I'm actually wondering if there's a "bug" where it won't display the Mod Amount setting, because I've carefully (sooo carefully) turned the knob for every setting from -25 to -100, and no dash ever appears. The Mod Rate setting is definitely 94, above -25 the Mod Amount doesn't sound right, but the reassuring "-" never appears for this setting, the only explanation I can think of is that it's set to something off the scale (like -101) so the dash never displays. If you're listening Korg, please give us another second to look at a parameter before switching back to the "Lay 1" or "Lay 2" display, it would REALLY help! The other point I wanted to make is that recently Tony Horgan has released a Google e-book (now in hard copy on Lulu.com as well) on Volca Drum, it has lots of recipes for different drum sounds, and I've also used Synthmata although I try to avoid interacting with my devices via computer. Tony also released a YT vid where he creates several basic drum sounds, which I would have loved to have seen when I was first getting started. By now I have other ways of getting basic drum sounds if I need them, and VD is really just for seeing how far I can mangle the Wave Guide, so much fun!
@@geraldclark5812 I overwrote the factory defaults a while back so I can't hear for myself the wobble you mention. How about sending that patch to Synthmata and see if the editor solves the mystery. Thanks for sharing, I will check out Tony Horgan's book.
Buena! Creo que es uno de los mejores tutoriales que he encontrado, muchísimas gracias! aprendí un montón. Me preguntaba de donde era el acento y me alegro saber que también eres chileno. Saludos desde Londres!
Thank you for this tutorial! It is very valuable to have the basics down before doing the crazy/wacky things shown in other advanced tutorials. Good to know the drum can be a normal drum machine if you want it to :-)
