Good work. Very well explained. My general rule-of-thumb starter recipe for kicks is: layer1 = sine wave, very low, extreme and fast pitch modulation to get that pop/click. Layer2=lp/bp noise. Very low pitch. slow/multi attack. I also like making a chiptune-style kick: layer1=saw. Pitched moderately low. layer2=sine. very short. pitched high with fast pitch envelope to create a blip.

Try this to get close to an agogo. You can set the Pitch to 106 for the high and 92 for the low agogo, with longer Release for the low agogo. Layer 1 Sine, Sine, Exponential Level 145 Amount 0 Rate 0 Pitch 106 / 92 (low) Attack 0 Release 118 / 130 Layer 2 Sine, Sine, Expo Level 145 Amount 10 Rate 135 Pitch 106 / 92 (low) Attack 0 Release 118 / 130 BIT 26 FLD 18 DRV 69 PAN 0 GAN 0
Regarding a crash cymbal, I have "synth crash" in the book, which does the job, but it's not possible to get an accurate recreation of a crash cymbal with the Volca Drum. It would be easier to do that if both of the Noise Wave generators created the same wave, but the randomisation for each is different. If they both output the same wave, it would be possible to play them together and offset them with the MOD and PITCH controls to get some phasing and flanging effects, as you can do with the Sine and Sawtooth waves. I think it's best to play to its strengths, and if you want a realistic crash, use a sample or another drum machine. You could try using the Wave Guide effect (applied only to a synth crash) to get some phasing effects.

I will keep playing with your examples and practice to maximize my learnings with the Volca. I am also interested in creating some Bongo sounds (if possible with the Volca Drum). Hi Tony! I read your book, thank you, it helped me a lot. Could you have make tutorial about pattern chains. I bought a Volka Drum, like a drum machine, is it possible to somehow flexibly adjust the sequence of patterns, since when I play the guitar I don't have the ability to switch patterns every time?.
I think there may be some misinformation in your book focusing on the volca drum. It doesn't seem as though it's possible on the drum to randomize accent, slice & active step. I followed this in your book & was only presented with the option to copy.
My Volca Drum isn’t working at the moment so I can’t check, but I think the book is correct. Make sure you are in t green correct mode (eg. Slice) and that the sound (Part) you want is selected, and that there are some steps triggered on that part in the pattern, then use Randomize Pattern.
Hello, fixed my Volca Drum and checked it today. It does work. EG, to randomize the Slice on a high hat sound in Part 2, select Part 2 and place it on every step of the pattern. Now play the pattern. With Part 2 selected, hold EDIT/STEP and press SLICE to enter EDIT SLICE mode. Now hold FUNC and press key 10, RANDOMIZE PATTERN. This will add random amounts of Slice to Part 2 on random steps of the pattern.
@TonyHorgan ah okay! I see the where confusion took place. Thank u for this! In the book it says FUNC + key 7 to randomize. But instead it's key 10. I appreciate your reply, it works perfectly now.
