Some things to address the common questions:
1) Yes the audio is pitched down a bit. I thought I would get a copyright strike if I used the original audio. Someone told me i wont so I'll use the original audio in the next animatic
2) this really is my first animatic. Which is why I'm incredibly proud to finish it. It took me two weeks, since I've been doing it late at night after I've done schoolwork and projects
3) I've noticed that some of you guys were asking if i had a DA account or tumblr. I have a DA account but I don't post there. I haven't posted anything there in a long long while lmao. I DO have a tumblr.

Emilia Faye May be Connor actually think that. He already planned his suicide, why would he kept the letter anyway? He neatly keep it with him, not for returning, but for confession he never had a chance to make.

I love that she doesn’t change what she remembers of her brother. She refuses to act like he was a perfect human being that treated her like a princess. He was obviously a jerk. She shouldn’t have to miss him if she truly doesn’t.

I know everyone talks about Conner abusing Zoe, but I havent seen the musical in person, so could someone tell me, what did he do? I haven't been able to find anything that says and I'm genuinely curious.

According to Zoe, Connor once came to her room and started banging on her door, screaming "I'm going to kill you!" like we see in the film reel in the animatic, so a lot of people have inferred that he abused her verbally and was generally unstable
Butterfly Taster I'm not making any excuses for him, what he did was wrong, but no one got him help when he needed it. He was clearly mentally unstable yet his family did nothing. Thats the thing about this musical: Not a single character is innocent and free from blame, no one was perfect.

It wasn't my intent to pin all the blame on Connor, in fact, I agree with you. I was just making a neutral statement based on what information the musical supplied on the topic of why Zoe doesn't want to mourn Connor. That's also why I said "a lot of people have inferred"-- as in I was being impartial. Just wanted to clear that up, since I truly do wish something was done to help Connor.
Though in a cut (can I call it cut? Is that the right term?) song called "In the Bedroom Down the Hall" Cynthia reveals that he had actually been going to therapy ("maybe they could take away the anger in his eyes"), so I suppose they hadn't completely just sat back and watched.

natsukashii maybe not abused thats just how some brothers and sisters acted and it wasn't all conners fault he was messed up in the head. He didnt have anyone to care for him, or that was just he thought. he just didn't reach out to his family. Maybe I haven't seen the musical yet.

"Why should I play the breathing girl?" Thats what I thought the lyrics were
everyone says that this animatic is amazing because it shows that Zoe shouldn’t miss Connor because he was terrible to her, and she doesn’t miss him because she shouldn’t. But listen to the way she says “Don’t say it wasn’t true, that you were not the monster… that I knew…” and then it sounds like she’s crying. and she ends with “and my world has gone dark…” and doesn’t finish like she usually does. The purpose of this song is to show that despite everything her brother did, despite the pain and fear he caused her, she still misses him. This whole song is her finding reasons not to hurt, not to grieve, to not feel because why should she miss him? He was terrible to her.
But she realised that she misses him because that was her brother. Maybe he ripped the heads off her Barbies, but he still played general and soldier with her while their parents fought. He still picked her a flower and said ‘it’s missing a petal, just like you’re missing a few screws upstairs’, yet the flower was beautiful.
He was her first friend. And she loved him and she hates herself for it.
That’s the beauty of this song. It shows Zoe’s true persona. A broken, grieving girl who lost her big brother.
The first stages of grief, of course, are denial and anger.

For anyone hating on ANY of the Murphys:
The whole point, in my perspective, of the family dynamic of the Murphys was to show that when someone you know, love, or are related to commits suicide, there is no one right way to feel.
Honestly every emotion is valid
Sadness that they were feeling this way and they are gone and the whole grieving process is crushing you
Anger for the fact that they “threw it all away” and you know, abandoned you
Relief that now they might be in a better place
Guilt for not doing better, or guilt over feeling any of the above emotions
Or denial of one of the above emotions.
I’m just saying, that they’re all doing the best they can, it’s not easy, it’s messy, and no matter how you or me or anyone else would’ve dealt, this is how *they* dealt, and that’s one of my fav things about this story.
I thought that Connor and Zoe were close as kids tho? Like, from what was said in the dialogue, plus how Zoe says "you've given me my brother *back* " it seems more like at some point Connor started struggling a lot with his mental illnesses and stuff and everything went downhill and no one in the family really knew how to deal with it. So yes, Connor abused his sister with his outbursts and stuff, but their parents never fully committed to helping Connor get the treatment he needed, especially Larry, who used to say that Connor was just 'pretending for attention' and stuff, and during the time that we got to see Zoe interact with Connor at the start of the musical, she seemed to be teasing him a lot and stuff, which, I guess is fair, but it still makes me think about how their parents' careless attitude towards Connor might have rubbed off on her as well in some way, and, well, I'm just saying that it wasn't all Connor's fault. It was the whole family who was messed up, some more and some less, but they all could have handled it all better nonetheless.
Edit: oh, also, the removed songs from the musical described how Connor used to be happy as a kid, and how he liked to tell jokes a lot and stuff, so yey, more evidence that Connor isn't an entirely bad person I guess :'>
Terēze Locika i have to agree, especially with some of the lyrics in this song. It seems that she is struggling because she does miss him but at the same time is struggling to come to terms with how much je struggled in the end
im totally behind this viewpoint of the whole family dynamic in general. Some people think Connor's the root of all evil. But from dialogues you could tell he was just a kid struggling with unaddressed mental illnesses worsened by paranoia from pot, like when he freaked out from Evan's letter in the printing room and thought it was somehow targeting him. And a family who didn't understand it or know how to deal with it, which u cld tell frm the dialogue and 'anybody have a map' - that doesn't mean they don't love him. The whole musical's about mental illness and connor's family is an example of a family who unfortunately lived in confusion and pain, even before connor's death.

@@user-os9sd5oe4w Thats the thing I love about this musical, there aren't really any villains or bad guys, just mistakes that where taken too far.
I think what's really sad about this part of the story is that Connor's mother is really the only one grieving. The thing about family tragedies is that... It's a family tragedy! When a family member dies, the entirely family is usually affected, so at least that way, you're not alone; at least you have someone with you who understands the loss you're experiencing. But this wasn't the case with Cynthia. She's the only one feeling loss and it was causing more fights between her and the rest of the family. Perhaps if it weren't for Evan, the Murphy's probably would've broken apart to even more pieces

Angie as someone explained, everyone was mourning in their own way. Cynthia was in the denial stage of grieving while Zoe and Larry were in the anger stage of grief.

Nikki Beray You can see the difference when Zoe replace "Why should I play the grieving girl?" then in the last part to "I CANNOT play the grieving girl." No matter how Connor abuse her physically and verbally; she wanted to believe that he's a good person but couldn't for all what he did to her. As to why both Zoe and their father don't want to mourn him since they thought Connor wasn't trying enough to connect with them like how they expected him to do. But for Cynthia: she still believed that Connor was still with them and a kind-hearted person since she "heard his voice."
Margaret May Alojipan Ga its not that easy to forgive especially when the person in question is someone you wouldn't expect to be the one to hurt you. but mothers are a totally different subject. even if their own child stabs them to death, they would never hold a grudge.

#1 I love this animatic so much. The effort you put into it and the emotion in the scenes is just... inincredible
#2 I love the details of Connor's abusive behavior. Lots of people love to portray him as this different guy who never did anything wrong, when in reality he was a mentally ill kid and a terrible person. This really shows how Zoe doesn't feel right mourning for someone who abused her.
#3 I love the detail you did with the parents, with you showing how emotional Cynthia was when she was reading the letters and how cold yet conflicted Larry was holding the baseball glove. It's an amazing portrayal really of how Larry and Cynthia tried to get to their son, but they didn't try hard enough.
#4 I hope to see more animatics from you. This was amazing. Kudos for your first one.

You're Reading My Name, Aren't You? Okay, 1, Connor wasn't a terrible person. Sure, he did some bad things and he wasnt the nicest, but the thing was that he had mental issues that werent being taken care of. If he got meds or went to therapy it would have turned out much better for him but he didnt get what he needed.
And 2, larry didnt try to get through to connor. He thought that the fact that connor commited suicide was a huge waste, and that all his hard work was wasted, like connor was some project that didnt turn out right. He didnt feel sad that connor died, he was angry that he did it, that all his hard work was ruined.
I actually see Connor’s treatment of Zoe as a classic cry for help. It’s pretty well known that most bullies are suffering deeply from various mental conditions... it isn’t as simple as merely being abusive and doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a terrible person.
From this whole song I’ve actually always seen it as the way people deal with grief. Cynthia edges sort of towards denial... believing Connor is still there and refusing to acknowledge that he’s truly gone. Zoe and Larry both edge towards anger with Zoe focusing on all the reasons she should be glad he’s dead, rather than fall apart, and Larry framing it as a waste rather than facing the thought that maybe he failed somehow. They’re all very normal stages of grief and I kind of think the entire point of the play is lost when we judge any of them. The real villain here is mental illness... whether borderline personality disorder/depression in Connor, extreme social anxiety in Evan that leads to him lying to try avoiding social stress/embarrassment, and the reactions of healthy people without these issues trying to make sense of the fallout of people succumbing in various ways to their illness and acting under the influence of them.
This is PHENOMENAL! The art is so beautiful and the symbolism and emotions are done perfectly. I am in awe of how amazingly you interspersed scenes of Zoe terrified as a child being tormented by Connor. The little details like Mr. Murphy holding the baseball glove were also super poignant. This animatic is simply fantastic, and I am going to rewatch it until I've committed every frame to memory

That scene gets me every single time I watch this animation. She’s feeling the guilt of hating Connor, and she reads the note fully believing that Connor loved her deep down (He could’ve, but Zoe doesn’t think he did at all, and this note made her think again), and she also is realizing she’ll never be able to forgive him for what he did.
I've never seen Dear Evan Hansen, but the music within it is gorgeous. I think your animatic clearly portrays how Connor abused Zoe when they were growing and how she doesn't understand how he could be a good friend to anyone. And how even his parents don't feel anything after his death. Which is what you want from an animatic, to be able to tell what they are going through with the beauty of the music and the glorious-ness of the drawings. It also shows how his mother wants to be closer to him, but could never manage to do it. That she loves him, but can't show it due to the lack of relationship between them. Absolutely jaw-dropping. Well done.

The fact that it was Zoe being told to not pick on Connor breaks my heart. That's what goes on in so many households. So I feel Zoe's pain. It happens in my own life. I'm the one that gets told to be nice, when really sometimes I'm not in the wrong. I also get told not to make such a big deal over small things and crying about them. And I assume that's also what goes on with Zoe. But I would be so heartbroken if I ever lost my little brother. I love him to death.

The memory of Connor throwing that baseball at Zoe, his ghost hugging his mother ( or maybe she imagines he'd do it? ) or how Zoe felt about how everyone told her to stop being mean to her brother and how it made her feel. "Now that I know that you are still here" and also sorta yes, it's like an imaginary hug from Connor, at least in Cynthia's point of view hahaha
beeyoungkah I assumed as much since it seemed to fit a lot better than that "ghost hug" idea, haha! But it's it's a lovely detail and it just adds so much to the desperation of Cynthia about losing her son and how she longs to be able to hug him again and aahh it's just a lovely detail and I can honestly say this entire Animatic is one of my favorites?? Especially the little cut ins at the duet parts and how the just complement each other and the emotions very well--
I'm rambling now but yeah, it's a great animatic and I like how you can definitely see the love and thought put into it!

You drew my emotions so perfectly.. I have a brother exactly like Conner was. Only worse. And he is still alive, and he's hurting my family again. Ever since I found this song I can't help but cry. Zoe and I feel the same in the exact same context. I know my brother isn't dead but he destroyed our family. I'm 17, almost an adult now. And he's torn our family apart. I cant help but feel if he did die.. i wouldn't sing a requiem for him then either. He's hurt so many people. The last straw was going to a family reunion recently and finding out he abused my cousin as well when she was a little girl. And the scene when Zoe says Conner was banging on her door screaming how he would kill her for no reason. That happened to me. It happened to both me and my mother. We called the police. And dad wouldn't do anything. Now we all have trust issues. And this animatic, it's us. Thank you for drawing this, I always want to draw what I see and feel but I cant. Thank you for helping me. I showed this to my dad last night and he said "somebody feels the same way you do." Thank you.

An updated thought. (That's my other account). I just noticed. My mother is mimicking Conner's mom now. She knows what my brother did.. but since he's her son she's not willing to let him go. Even though he always only hurts her she can't manage to let him go

I relate to Zoe a lot. I have an twin brother who has been abusive my whole life with parents who were distant. I would get blamed for his behavior. I don't know how I would react to his death but it would probably resemble Zoe's reaction.

Holy cow, this is great! I've actually never seen the full musical but I really enjoy this song and I've watched just about all the animatics for it. The point being, this is the best animatic I've seen for this song, period. For all the other animatics I've had to look in the comments to get an explanation of the story but this one tells the story and everything you need to know through the visuals. It's such a breath of fresh air, and something that I believe is really hard to get just right. I actually learned more about these characters' backstories in this animatic than all the others and the youtube comments combined. Bravo! Not to mention the art is spectacular. Thank you for this beautiful contribution to the Dear Evan Hansen animatics.

why does this one not have more views? dang it ok I have a brother still alive but has done/kinda still does do drugs and this song from the sister's point of view is so me. all of her memories in this I can totally relate to in every way it is actually a little scary. especially the " I'll kill you" part. I feel the same! I have a (now estranged) brother who's very similar to Connor. It's pretty rare to see negative or non-existent relationships between siblings portrayed in media, so I always appreciate when I see a character I can relate to like Zoe. I think beeyoungkah captured it so amazingly! It feels like they looked directly into my mind!
Yeah due to drugs, my brother has now schizophrenia, paranoia, bi-polar issues, social anxiety, anxiety in general, and depression. people don't really stop to consider that the drugs affect your brain to the point you can't even think even when you're not high really. He once got in a car wreck high and it snapped his neck. the doctors said he would most likely be paralyzed but by the grace of God he actually isn't. I only fear that one day that might be the case for him, or he takes one too strong and it either A: basically turns him into a vegetable or B: actually kills him.
But the scariest possible reality is that if that were to happen, I might feel like Zoe where I don't even care. now I do have moments where I DO care for him, but he has been so in and out of my life that I don't care if he lives with me or is in jail or prison.
That sounds really tough! I've always known drugs were dangerous but I've never had anyone in my life addicted to them, so your story really gives me some perspective on that. Yeah, my brother has Aspergers, and in my parents' mind, him having any form of mental illness means I need to forgive him and love him no matter how he acts- that's why the part of the video where Zoe's parents are telling /her/ to stop picking on /him/ resonates with me. But I definitely relate to what you said about perhaps not caring even if he did pass away. I haven't seen him for 2 years, so he hasn't been someone I've considered a loved one for a while. Recently, I heard that he had gotten punched in the face and had his nose broken and orbital bone fractured, and I felt a little bad about that, but mainly because the event upset my parents, I think. I definitely don't want my brother living with me, but whether he's just far away or in jail for his crimes doesn't really matter to me.

As someone who actually hasn't seen the musical but is obsessed with the soundtrack, the animatics grant a much clearer insight into the raw emotions of the characters. This one especially because you're given a visual as to what the family went through with Connor. This was really well done. Awesome job!

Even though Connor was a shit brother, I still feel bad, he clearly took a wrong turn in his life and he lashed out. When he needed help the most he couldn't get it. His mother didn't seem to care but now cares because she gets a piece of him, even though it was a lie. His dad is silent about it but seems to hate what Connor did in his life. Zoe knows the most about it but she still believed Evan. She believed he cared but he was still a horrible monster. Honestly this song tugs at my heartstrings, it shows how people react to death
His mother is denial that he was bad
His father is disappointed in Connor
And Zoe was probably confused as to why he was such a horrible person and yet his letters showed he seemed to care

I adore this because I think you beautifully capture the nuances of different people dealing with intense grief. We have Cynthia’s denial and Zoe/Larry’s similar but opposing forms of anger. You can so easily see Zoe holding on to anger and trying to keep the pain of loss at bay by focusing on all the ways she suffered with how Connor treated her, and then the beautiful way in which that anger starts to crumble as she wonders if she’d been wrong about him all along and desperately doesn’t want that’s to be the case. Then there’s Larry who also tries to be angry at Connor for throwing away the life he was given as a deflection to not see HIMSELF as a failure for having missed any warning signs.
It’s just so amazing and I feel you captured the grieving process so beautifully in this animatic... phenomenal job, it’s rare to see one perfectly capture the spirit of the lyrics and overall message of the musical ❤️

My favorite part of this song is Zoe's line "After all you put me through, don't say it wasn't true! That you were not the monster that I knew"
It's a heartbreaking catharsis to hear her basically telling Connor's ghost that he doesn't get to act like he was a tortured soul after he's dead and make her feel bad for not missing him when all he did in life was make her miserable. She's rejecting the idea that him being troubled and mentally ill excuses what he did to her and her pain that he caused. It's very powerful and I think it's really incredible to see it in Zoe's character
Ive become obsessed with this song, but solely because of this beautiful animation... Is that bad? It just never gets old
Actually if you think, this song is fundamentaly like "Me inside of me" in Heathers. Just think about it. It's how everyone started s worshiping Heather after her dead and became "angel", because "she took her life". Everyone completly forgets all the harm she caused. Here Zoe is trying as hard as she can to see Connor in other light, but she just can, after all he's done.
Now im thinking of a Connor version of "Me inside of me" 💀

Ok I'm freaking out about this being your first animatic, this is soooooooooo well made!!!! I love your drawing style, who did you sell your soul to for these skills?? If I had to say something it'd maybe put more expression in their faces (they lost someone close and don't know if they should be mourning after all) but it's such a small detail compared to everything else! How it cuts to the father after following Zoe, the parallel between her and father, how the mother is reading the letter and keeping Connor near her, how we see Zoe's memories with her brother and the picture in the end with Connor's face hidden.... UGH it's so good!

Reading those words and thinking they were her brothers, right before it all. That's heartbreaking.
Zoe being told those words were from Conner, and how she's been hurt by Evan's lies.

I just love how you captured the three different attempts of them to cope with their grief so perfect! There is Zoe whos world is falling apart because her brother who was always picking on her and being mean while never being punished for it has this (potantially) other sweet side which she can't belive really existed in the first place.
There is the mother who findes peace in those fake mails because she finally sees the son she always liked to pretend she had.
And there is the father who can't really belive it and tries to cope with his death through Evan (at least later)

Oh my goodness I love this video! I can't believe it was your first animatic, it's so good! I really like your art as well as the way you showed Zoe's memories of her brother.
This speaks to me as a person who has toxic and abusive grandparents. My grandma died last year. Everyone was talking about her as if she was a good person. Now, when ever they talk about her to me and my sister they would try to make us guilty for not seeing her (we sadly live in the same house on different floors). They would say that she just "loved us so much" and "wanted to see us more". Even if it was love, taht doesn't justify what she has done to us. She. Caused. Me. Trauma. Because. Of. Her. I. Almost. Died. Once. And I may over react about the trauma, but I am pretty sure I am not. And no - I really am not blowing up that thing with the death. For serious. Thank God for my carring mom. Not just she raised us the best way possible, but didn't lie to us about our grandparents and once we started to get little bit older, even expoesing them.
This is amazing. Your art style is phenomenal in its detail and realism and the way you presented how Zoe felt about the fact that Connor's attitude towards her juxtaposed his supposed suicide note and how he was always prioritized over her, and added in that film reel of how their relationship changed through the years was an incredible touch. My only comment is about how it seemed rather static in some parts. I feel like you could've shown more emotion in some of the character's faces, and perhaps used more/different frames at a time, or even just subtly tweak a few frames to show some change in the character's actions.
But those are just my two cents, and I greatly enjoyed this animatic overall, good job :)

Anything to help a fellow artist out :) I find that you can convey more emotion through the eyebrows, eyes, mouths and how you twist them, and definitely shadows.

I've been watching this amimatic for ages and for some unknown reason, I haven't commented till now. I really love this amimatic and I'm pretty sure it's my favourite. You so clearly protray emotions and as someone who's currently going through whay Zoey went through, I can confirm it is 100% realistic. Both my brothers have threatened me countless times and so many other countless things and this animatic really did bring me to tears. You really did just bring so much more into the song by showing the abuse of the past. Not only did you do that, but you also managed to clearly show how the parents feel about the situation, a downfall most animatics have. Thank you for creating this, and I can't wait to see how you improve. ❤

I feel like this is the most accurate depiction of Zoe's feelings I've ever seen. The fandom demonizes her, when it's clear she's been hurting for years and years. I cried actual tears at the end during the photo sequence. This is beautiful.

I'm going threw a situation where people want me to mourn for this person but the stuff he put me threw and then they say that he loved me more than anything . Why should I mourn for that person . Anyways this shows that everyone mourns differently

You know, people focus so much on "it's okay if you can't hate your abusers" or "it's fine if you still love/miss your abusers, you're healing", but what when this is not the case?
I love Connor's character and I can relate to him, but I'm so glad for this song. I'm so glad to hear someone saying they don't feel bad for their abuser's death, I'm glad to see someone feeling even relieved by it, especially it being a female character.
I am no angel, I am no cinnamon roll soft baby who will forgive, cry and miss my father or the bullies at school. I don't care if they have issues and I wouldn't care if they fell ill, got hit by a truck or even killed themselves, or even if they were abused too. It's not my job to fix them, they hurt me. And it's so hard for me to say this because it's not beautiful and noble like to love and forgive the ones who hurt you. No, it's bad, cruel and it's icky, those are _bad_ thoughts. But then what? Should I just not talk about it then? What about all the other people who feel bad and evil for having those icky thoughts? The ones who fantasized about their abusers' deaths and even thought about doing the job themselves? I want them to feel valid too. I think we deserve it.
If I was there, i would tell Zoe to not beat herself up over it. That overthinking if the abuse was bad enough or if the abuser was actually a good or bad person doesn't lead no one anywhere, because in the end nobody is completely evil. But that doesn't matter, because the important is ' you don't have to be around a person that makes you feel like shit' , you don't need to justify yourself. It was a really important lesson I learned.

I love how in the painting at the end, you can see everyone’s face clearly, but the light reflecting off the glass hides connor’s face. Truly a work of art
