that scabbard is meant to be worn INSIDE a sash or belt mate. kinda like a bowie knife... the seam is worn on the inside and the clip is worn on the outside of the belt. its made so a fellow could easily remove his sword inside seating or entering carriages and such
Well...any self respecting Man wearing a small sword would do so by means of a sword belt of one of the types around at the time.sashes are mostly worn by the military, not civilian gentlemen
You were spot on regarding the silly antics pulled in the demonstration video, with all that fruit impaling and ego caressing. I thought exactly the same thing ten minutes ago when I watched said video and ended up thinking: "this told absolutely nothing about the sword!" - which is the opposite of what a manufacturer should look forwards, in my humble opinion, when trying to sell their products. Thank you for the video, and hope you've been enjoying your purchase these last two years :-) I'm planning to get a Colichemarde myself, along with a Small Sword to boot. By the way, I don't mind Cold Steel because I purchase at a store, so I can do the most I can to avoid a lemon (Albeit you do seem to have, despite your notes, gotten a good one, or usable one, without a doubt). Cheers!
As much as I'd rather save up for an Albion, I think I'll be getting the CS Colichemarde anyway. Mostly because as a weapon, I find the Colichemarde very intriguing so it'd be nice to see what these are like and because CS seems to be the only company that makes this particular type of sword. Don't know if I'll be hanging onto it though.
Ever notice that CS has attachments for a frog but doesn't sell the frog for it? I have a Ribbed Shell Guard Companion Dagger and it's supposed to have an angled clip so you can draw it with the left hand behind the back. It's just a regular nub for a frog. I had to use an old leather frog I already had. A bit loose. The Colichemarde Smallsword fits it though.
Are you sure you collect Small Swords ? The gaps at the ricasso are always covered by a leather or felt washer. The washer also provides a seal against moisture and the elements when the sword is sheathed in the scabbard. It's easy enough to make your own.
thanks for your video! i couldn't find anything else on this sword anywhere I am tossing up between buying the cold steel small sword and the colichemarde... i am a novice foilist and while i seriously enjoy it, 17th century weapons are more my thing. Since both are technically small swords, i assume the skills in foil will transfer reasonably well to both, but as a home defense weapon, what is your opinion on which would be better? also, can i bother you to find the exact price of shipping from kult of athena? i'm also in Aus, and $200 shipping sounds pretty damn scary
+Emerson Krstic Hey mate. Both the small sword and the colichemarde would be good for home defence. The cold steel small sword has a hollow ground blade (meaning a triangular cross section) so it would have a very stiff blade, prefect for thrusting. The colichemarde has a diamond cross section and is sharpened but has 0 cutting capacity. But it still has a pretty stiff blade and thrusts effortlessly into cardboard boxes and bottles. But I just liked the look for the colichemarde better is all haha. Shipping was $106.96 AUD or $81.65 USD. So it was pretty expensive.
Nice review. Any idea why the quillon veers off to the right? I'm sure it's historically accurate - but this isn't something i've seen on standard (non-colichemardee) smallswords.
Here I am 7 years later. I don't know if anyone mentioned it, but that hook on the scabbard is for your belt (or frog, if used) and would go on the outside. That means when wirn the seam on the scabbard would be less visible the way it is in your example. I do appreciate the review, though. I bought one and am currently waiting for it to arrive so I'm satisfying myself by watching you talk about it. I've heard there are fakes being sold though. Could you tell me how your sword was shipped to you (I've heard Cold Steel doesn's shipbthe sword inside the scabbard, but I've never bought a Cold Steel SWORD before).
Hey mate, I can't remember if the sword was shipped in the scabbard for certain, but i'm pretty sure it was. I ordered mine of Kult of Athena. They're a reputable dealer so i'm confident it's not a fake
Hey would this cut and stab better or worse than Cold Steel's - Five Ball Spadroon? I'm really debated between this and the Five Ball. Not sure which to get.
If you want a blade that can Cut and Thrust, I'd go the Spadroon. This sword would thrust better into soft targets, because the blade is so fine. But it has zero cutting capacity. It may be able to cut a milk bottle full of water. Maybe. I wouldn't really try it though because it is a thrusting only blade. The Spadroon was a sword that evolved from the small sword as most Military officers did small sword fencing at university or what not, So they developed a sword based off the small sword with a thicker blade to also be able to cut. TLDR: If you wanna cut stuff. Go the spadroon.
JessBooty Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning towards the spadroon now. Can the spadroon stab about as well as this? I like the look of this, it's very unique. Never seen anything like it before. However I'm new to swords. And I'm thinking I'd like a sword that can cut as well as thrust.
Spadroon probably wont thrust as well as a small sword. I've not handled the cold steel spadroon, so i can't say for certain. But i can say, historically spadroons were known as frankly, sub par military swords. They evolved from the small sword to incorporate cutting, But they were still too light to be able to cut well. And they were usually too flexible to thrust well either. Alot of infantry officers used cavalry sabre's in battle instead. And in 1802 the british army got rid of the spadroon and brought out the first infatry sabre (The 1802 pattern infantry sabre which was based off the 1796 light cavalry sabre) But if you look at it as a civilian sword just like the small sword, It's a perfectly suitable sword.
The small sword is more than adequate against a sabre, they faced each other often in the 18th century and many infantry officers preferred the small sword over the sabre especially French officers.
So Cold Steel produces decorative swords from what one hears... Does anyone here know of a colichemarde that is actually usable? I have one from 1740 but as you can imagine, I'm not gonna bang and flail that around anytime soon as I don't wish the officer who carried that to rise from the grave and haunt me :D.
Marco2G they were very effective weapons. George Washington carried one. btw the wide foot places weight behind the thrust and can be used in a 2 handed thrust, like a bayonet.
Still the only Colichemarde review video!
the scabbard is meant to go with the hook out tucked into a sash, so the seam will be on the inside when worn properly
Or rather, the scabbard put into the frog of a proper belt for it, which also tend to have the holes for the hook on the outside.

small swords came up against sabres all the time in the 18th century and where more than up to the task
my therapist told me not to be ashamed of my small sword, so I am thinking of obtaining this item.

That is beautiful man
Man I really want one of those... Nice shirt!
Haha Thanks man :) Go get one
The seam on the scabbard is correct. The scabbard is worn in a leather Frog with the 'Clip' facing out. Much like later era 1800's bayonets.

Talking Blades I would imagine its so it will not get caught on the belt or sash which carries it.
Hi good. Work... How flexibel is it ? Is it overall a stiff blade
Looks like you got a factory second ... decent review

It looked like that blade's cross section wasn't triangular... is that even a smallsword blade or is the camera playing tricks on me?
From what I’ve seen it is triangular, just very flattened.
👍👍👍👑👑👑
a small sword could absolutely wreck a sabre

Hey mate, This is definitely not a decorative sword. It's a good cheap thing you can bash around all you want :)
Marco2G Great little review.
I just chose the CS small sword.
Free 2 day shipping in the US
Can't imagine paying an extra 200... kudos!!!
