Great video. My dad used to explain the difference between a knife and a dagger in his classes in Medieval history. Everyone of all classes had knives or used knives. But a dagger ( large or small) was double edged and had a point. It was designed for self defence, combat or assassination . With the dagger, the point is the point

Very informative and educational for a knife/sword nut like me. Though a Fällkniven fan as I am (I know their knives are pricy but I love the Scandinavian design and craftsmanship that is authentically Japanese), I love Recon Tanto by CS and consider it one of the best EDC/self-defense knives.
I got a video at the Little Rock historical museum’s bowie exhibit the audio is not great because I was trying to be nice to everyone else but I cover a broad span of bowie history with real antiques. If you search Bowie knife history your should be able to find it .
In a way it might go back to pre-medieval times considering the Sax (which gave its name to the Saxons) and the clip point knife survived in one shape or another all the way until the bowie came up. It´s not as common in iconography, but like the Messer-family and the falchions, it was in widespread use (plus the latter two partially feature clip points as well and can be regarded as predecessors to cutlasses and sabers)

@@AcidTripwire Sorry, but it THIS the real thing. Read the description " Made to MOD specification ". In other words, they make them for the MOD ( |Ministry Of Defense ). I've handled a WW2 vintage one and these are exactly the same. the Mc Donalds Armouries ones are a LOT more top-end than the originals.

Will you ever make a Bauernwehr? IMHO it´s pretty underrated, but you´ve already got his big brother the Kriegsmesser. It´s quite a vicious weapon for fighting in confined spaces but was often the only purpose-built battle weapon peasants had. For those that don´t know: the peasants' defense was a shortsword that looked a lot like an oversized kitchen knife (ca. 20 In blade). It had a reinforced back to make it stiffer for thrusts, but probably also for parrying and it had like his big brother a nail rivetted through the crossguard. Unlike the Kriegsmesser it was better suited for thrusting, but was still quite a slashing blade, quite like a Khaiber knife. PS: it usually comes with a companion knife and pricker fixed to the same sheath.
No! In old german woodprints/ Holzschnitten of the ,Bauernkrieg' era, the Bauernwehr is a knife in the size and look like a large Bowie. This knife was when necessary a weapon, but usually simply a tool. A big butchers knife, a knife for harvest work, a knife for cutting thin branches etc.. In those days not every german had the allownes or money to buy a thing , which was a weapon only. And after the , Bauernkrieg' rebellions, 1524-1526, in most german ( in those days also austrian ) regions, farmers had no more an allowness to own weapons.

I have a switchblade that is my EDC. Switchblades are legal in my state. I can switch out blades too. I have a dagger blade and a tonto blade. They are both great, I use the dagger blade more. I figure daggers have been used for thousands of years, and I can see why.

Does it mean that I could use Cold Steel daggers for these purposes without damaging their edges (not more than I would damage the edges of knives)? Examples: of the daggers to which I am referring: Cold Steel Taipan 3V, and Cold Steel Hand and a Half Dagger series. By the way the same applies to the Cold Steel Laredo and Natchez Bowies. I ordered the Cold Steel Companion Dagger. Which is well made and sharp. Unfortunately Cold Steel didn't make a scabbard with an an angled clip so you can draw with the left hand which would be drawn behind your back. Instead they have a steel button on the front of the scabbard for a leather frog perhaps. They should sell a leather frog with it. Or just made the appropriate scabbard to begin with.
Imagine being hit anywhere in the midsection with a Cinquedea, guaranteed death, cinque, (Italian for 5) is incorporated into the width of the blade, 5 fingers wide. The blade is as wide as your hand when it's flat. Very scary peice of metal
I didnt have an example of our dirk in stock. A Dirk is still a type of dagger. It is technically a Different name for a type of dagger.The ethnocentric Highland dirk came in different forms. Single and double edged But usually didnt have any type of guard ,so I Don't know that I would say best of both worlds because Id personally rather have a dagger w a crossguard, otherwise you could lose fingers.
Wouldn't mind having that Quillion Dagger along with the 32" Back Sword. I could actually wear them around here legally. I EDC a CS Spartan and big ring handled double edge Sickle blade by Scherade called the Shasta McNasty, along with a CS Double Agent I, and a Victorinox Sentinel single hand right clip, lightweight folding knife multitool. Wear all that and more everyday, and I do everything, including practicing out in the forest. Neat thing, is a large t shirt hanging down hides them all, yet I can draw any two of the three in under a second, and I got a badass custom cane goes with me everywhere already in hand anyway, so I'd just use it and the McNasty, or the little Double Agent I, together. Practice with Tomahawks too. I want to devise launching weighted kevlar bolos from my cane, and also a detacheable sling for exploding heads of those who run at 60 yards whatever. Im too old to run now. Ran through the forest in a raging storm the other day, and it was all I could do, so I need something for distance. I got some CS Magnum blow gun's, but they're for sniping close in. So a cane sling is the answer, if I find myself wandering the post apocalyptic wastes. I don't think the cane sling is legal. But if its apart, then it's okay. If I spent money on the Quillion Dagger and the Back Sword, I'd want to get trained, get into HEMA. I probably won't do it, because Im poor and not very social anymore. Well, I make good use of the blades I have. The Spartan is a great all around large folding knife. Really good at bushcraft because its so solid and controllable, well made. I can't justify the Expense of something so specialized as the dagger and sword unless I made it into a hobby and pursued learning, yet that would cost more in several ways. Yeah, my McNasty Sickle is highly specialized and limited in use, but it was inexpensive, and hangs easy.
@@hermespino9985 You are correct. They tended to be single edged, and with quite thick blades for doing pretty much anything. In case you didn't know, Tod Cutler does some very nice authentic ones ( copies from museums and from the Mary Rose ) for a very decent price for such nice blades.
A knife by definition does not have to have a single cutting edge or be utilitarian. All daggers are knives, but not all knives are daggers. A dagger is a more specific term for a knife that is typically double edged, primarily designed for stabbing or thrusting attacks, as a weapon.
If your blade happens to fall under the “short sword” category, does that make it more dangerous and therefore require you to register it with the government? Also, I’m not trying to be a negative Nancy, but on the newest Parrying Dagger, the ring seems to be rendered purely for looks by the Quillions sticking out more than the ring ??

But these daggers seem to me quite far from historical reproductions.

edi you also see the big clip point blade on Spanish Navajas ( like the cs espada ) that served a similar role as the bowie in Spain and the new world

bollock dagger a dagger for self defense and fighting. we just dont make one for me to have to displayed.

I have the same knife w/ the leather sheath. The leather has brutalized my knifes finish on the blade. Kydex is way better.
