I love these vintage mahogany runabouts! Beautiful in both sight and sound!
I love the sound of this boat. Reading the comments about cleaning the carb, LOL. It idled just fine, needed a few mins to warm up. Can't goose an engine like this cold and expect it to take the gas just like that. It is one of the most beautiful engine sounds I have ever heard.
Why is it that boat engines always sound better than car engines, this sounds phenomenally better than any automotive V12 I have ever heard before.
likely cause theyre much larger and unrestricted engines that are designed to run at mid-higher end RPM ranges for long periods of time. Similar to warbird plane engines from ww2. just my thoughts, not a pro answer here.
Oh only to hear the old girl running happy. Dad had a 24' Hacker when I was a youngster, re-powered by my grandfather, a Packard dealer, with a Packard V-12. I only just remember the sound of it starting up and running, but this stands the hair on the back of my neck straight up. Great post. Would really love to see more of this boat.
I like the way the starters sound. It reminds me of my grandparents 1948 Matthews boat
Shows how little you know about these engines...This IS in tune...it's just COLD. It's a great example of life with an antique engine. Makes people remember or shows the ones who don't know, what a carbureted, non- high energy ignition large CID engine sounds like when starting.
cold indeed
+ nice
nice when it finds its voice
I love how when he gets it started, the exhaust alone is trying to push the boat forward!
steelhawk67 you will find there is drag on the driveshaft to prop .. look at centre rear of boat
Work of art ‼️‼️
Hot cam, cold motor. God I love that sound!
Ohhhh, man!!! What a beautifully SICK sound! Dial in a little choke and let the old girl warm up. Love the exposed exhaust tips! Would love to see video of the engine in or out of it's bay!
holy CRAP what a great sound!
Wonderful sound "like ripping silk'.
What an AWESOME boat!! Great sounding 'ol gal! Wish I could get a peek at the engine and the rest!
Amazing.. it sounds like a beast.
beautiful sound...
Wonderful. Love it when they cough and splutter and then just growl
awsome boat!
cool to hear it running cold. imperfection is part of the appeal.
Now that's the sound of true power. I would take this over a rice rocket any day!
the boat and sound are beautiful. almost sounds a little too hot for a cruiser.lol
That boat engines sounds better than car engines I think has two reasons. One, the exhaust system is not the same, usually the exhaust pipe is shorter in a boat than in a car. And two, most boat engines has more piston displacement :)
Phacking Awesome! Just bloody marvelous! 5/5!
Don't really care about the green.. but your right.. EFI would make it run much better... even a simple TBI setup would help alot..
Just needs to warm up some..Beauty..
@dynodon427 No tune-up required. That motor wasn't designed to idle. It wanted to run, and run hard. I know that sound well, having built several that sound like that.
Dalek Anonymous my thoughts too. If that particular engine was due for tune up, it wouldn't try to start on those cold conditions. Thats a simple beast not happy til it eats
It really is a 1930s vintage 894 cubic inch flathead V-12. I have a picture of this engine somewhere in my computer, If I find it I iwll post it.
its bigger than it looks, about a 32 footer. it was a really impressive boat!
F-ing Bad ass. I love the old horsepower!!!!
What a bad ass sound
Its putting out about 650 ft/lb of torque, too.
i think the skipper was trying to rev it like a modern engine and the carb was just not up to the task, so thats why all the stall outs. fuel delivery and ignition are other reaons for relatively low output. Sweet engine, and great sounds, in any case!!
that thing sounds MEAN!!
music to my ears:D
Thanks for sharing. How about the rest of the boat... Sounds great, too.
No mufflers, plus of course the 894 cubic inches!!!!
Wow! That's over 14.6 liters of displacement!
Badass!!
part of the cooling system it doesn't have a closed cooling system like cars just gets cooled by sea water :)
A little cold-blooded, but what a nice boat and engine.
In the skipper's defense, I am pretty sure it wasnt stone cold, it had been out on a run around the lake not too long before this. But I know what you mean!
remember also this is a flathead engine with 1930s technology, and relatively low rpm.
nice
yeah, same!
Needs a tune up,..stick it on a Rolling bath,...lol. Sweet sounding boat dood.
I wish it were my boat! This was at Renton, Wa, maybe 1998 or so?
You guys are in Oregon right, I've seen you at a few shows out here if I remember right.
While the sound of this FABULOUS V12 is like sex out of a tailpipe, what frustrates me as I see this over and over is the operators over-expectations of old technology on an obviously chilly startup. For God's sake let it warm a little bit a least. WONDERFUL sound wish there was more available.
In my dreams.....
mine too!
carb cleaner???
Is this your boat????
First time out in a while??
That's a v6 v8 and straight 6 rolled into one.
Nice burble to the exhaust ,nothing like a V12 --she sounds a little lean on crank up ,work that choke ,lol Remember a V12 is sucking gas like a Sow pig feeding her litter, 12 cylinders like fuel !
Sounds like the carbs needed cleaning.
Ops my mistake but no matter 12 or 24 plugs the idea behind my comment is if I was going to post the sound of the engine running on U-Tube I would have done so with warmed it up and running smooth instead of hacking and coughing while it was cold or out of tune because those big CID engine when running smooth a joy to listen to.
What ever floats your boat I like to hear engines running smooth and in tune myself
figure 350 hp @ 3000 rpm more or less
this is why I do e.f.i
Old schoolers get that until the engine gets some heat into it, she gonna be fussy. Modern EFI and DIS style ignition systems have so spoiled us. I can smell the fat mixture through the screen
Sounds like a cold hearted lady
same reason they put big motors in cars that dont appear to be that big.
I bet you like to hearing people , Belching, Farting, and Coughing too
let her warm up a bit.
That boat needs a simple tune up
....anspringen ist wohl nicht sein Thema, gute Batterie !!
เห้นไหม QEEN 👈 👆 👿 Queen 👈 ลูก หลง 😄😄😄😄😄😄
Maybe the poor little thing has a cold and is all tucker out and needs to go to Bed and get 12 new spark plugs a cap, rotor and point an condensor
carburation is off a bit
What a sound... gettin' chicken skin...
overhead cam needs adjusting,,, to much air,,,,needs diesel fuel to...
It's gas engine flat head not overhead cams can't adjust the cam.
Nice tuning LOL. Get a professional to tune it for u.
00:21 that engine doesnt sound to well
HA... there's "no replacement for displcement"... they used humongous engines for sheer speed.... ever want to see actual poetry in motion ? Watch one of these old beauties up on plane going across the water, I guarantee you won't be able to kep your eyes off her....
