  • Trailer leaf springs are both designed for and require limited clearance between the axle and frame. For boats, a better design that doesn't shake the boat to death would be nice.

Indeed. Particularly while spending 90% of my time wondering how best to proceed. On the next one most of the decisions already will be made, so progress will be more like falling snow and less like a moving glacier.

Why don't you put axles on bottom of springs instead of the top. Jeepers have done this for years to increase frame height for more clearance when four wheeling.
You can also keep springs on top but add metal block between spring hangers and frame to get more clearance between springs and frame.
Talk to a shop in your area that specializes in making and installing suspension in trucks. You can also add additional leaf springs in your springs you have.
I own a few boats with trailers along with horse trailer. Horse trailer is Aluminum with Dexter Torson Axles. You may consider this instead of leaf springs with axles but frame would have to be beefy in that area. Positive on torsen axles, Nothing to hang up on in center of trailer and better ride. Keep on Fabrication of Boat & Trailer, Interesting as I'am a Machinist by Trade.
    Sincerely, Mr. T

This will be extremely interesting for theme to follow along with as you build what I suspect to be a new boat. What length are you planning? And are you going to be selling your hcm?
