  • Dr. Tony Talebi discusses "What is the Treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndrome?" with Dr. Byrnes. For further discussion visit www.HemOnc101.com
What is the Treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndrome:
The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) comprise a heterogeneous group of cancerous stem cell disorders characterized by dysplastic (abnormal) and ineffective blood cell production and a variable risk of transformation to acute leukemia. These disorders may occur de novo or arise years after exposure to potentially mutagenic therapy (eg, radiation exposure, chemotherapy).
The risk of developing MDS increases with age. Signs and symptoms at presentation of MDS are non-specific. Many patients are asymptomatic, with the diagnosis established upon routine laboratory screening. Others present with symptoms resulting from a previously unrecognized anemia, including fatigue, weakness, exercise intolerance, angina, dizziness, cognitive impairment, or an altered sense of well being.

My husband had multiple myeloma 13 years ago and had a giant harvest before his last transplant prior to any chemo. It lasted 5 years in complete remission and several years later he got a second auto transplant. He is now considered early MDS from theraply related drugs.
My question is, could he use his previously clean stem cell for a auto transplant for
mds. Are their any risks to this. Any help you could give would be sooo appreciated.
    Thansk

Cathy Margelewski - I see this is 3 y old. That said, I would refer your case not only to your prior MD but also see if the people at MD Anderson leukemia group will consult. In my opinion, they are the best in the World with MDS.

Good stuff but, typical of MDs educated before about 2005, your expert dances around the critical facts about the 4 clear subtypes of MDS. Patients today know a whole lot more than the old school MDs think. Basically, patronizing.
