First burn of the Solo Stove Mesa, My daughter and I start Two fires in the Solo Stove Mesa, One with pellets and the Second with sticks and chunks of wood. I give an honest review of my thoughts on the Mesa smokeless firepit, and I was impressed.

If you are looking for a cooking ring for the Mesa try this link, the cooking ring for the Titan works for the Mesa also according to the Solo Stove website:

You can make your own fire starter easily. Cotton balls and Vaseline. Get a sandwich size ziplock bag. Put about a dozen cotton balls in it and then put a spoonful or 2 of Vaseline in it. Squish it around and mix the 2 good. Best fire starter ever I think.. For whatever that’s worth. Lol
Great idea, that's exactly what I take backpacking along with some dryer lint.
And, I was watching your review on the solo mesa because I just ordered the solo bonfire and the mesa. Solo had a great special going on. Buy a ranger, bonfire or Yukon fire pit and you get the mesa for free!!!
@@mkellydixon I saw that it's a great deal, I had a $50 off coupon if you spend $200 in the video description not sure if you saw that. Or maybe I only had it on my Bonfire video. Either way that's a good special for Solo Stove
@@justbill how do you get the coupon code?
@@angiek.9573 czcams.com/video/jyhxEOM6bVQ/video.html there is a link in this video description, I just tried it, it still works I believe. Thanks for watching.
Violet is my favorite part. She shows perfect technique on how to roast a marshmallow
She learned from the master, 😂
She is an Angel…………🙏🏼🌹🙏🏼
Just ordered Mesa for the Wife for Christmas... your video made me feel good about my purchase. Thanks alot!! Great Job !!
Violet,
You were great! Keep helping Dad and learn all you can !!!
Merry Christmas 🎅
Thanks so much, it has been raining here in the South East for what seems like weeks, so I haven't been able to use mine lately. I hope your wife enjoys.
Violet lives for when I hit the record button, she loves it. It's great for me too getting to share something like this with her
Excellent video, appreciate you showing it start and the fire to develop. Thank You, just order myself one for christmas!
Hope you enjoy it! We have used ours a few times now. It's nice for a quick fire.
Had mine burning with pellets while watching your video. I was looking for wood burning tips and you helped me out. Thanks! Thank your assistant for me too. Gonna try roasting some marshmallows!
Will do, my assistant loves watching that video.
Does it soot up the bottom of the pots
very cool. I just ordered one yesterday. I live in a townhouse and this will be perfect for the patio. I have a propane fire pit but just not the same
I agree, just be sure you have plenty of pellets or wood on hand, I was having to feed it about every 10-15 minutes.
get a slightly bigger one, this ones meant for backpacking
It's cool to see this kind of stove gaining ground . My buddy and I have been building them for our personal use for backpacking for years . ;-)
Yes, there was a need
Thanks for posting. Just ordered the Ranger bundle which was 40% off and the Mesa was free with a code, free shipping too!
That is a great deal, enjoy!
great review of the pellets vs yard wood/sticks. i'll be making some smores with my little daughter as well!
That is what its best at, fun and quick fires.
@@justbill subbed! Fun project to do with the kiddos
Thank you 👍
Great review thanks!
Thank you
Many use that concept: once the outer ring cavity heats up, then the wood gas goes up there. Well if a person is on their property, it would be nice to prep the heat with a hot electric element. Then the gases would go where they are wanted more quickly.
That's interesting
Great video! Good job violet
Thank you! 😄
Thanks for the video Bill. I just ordered one while they're on sale too. I've got plenty of oak on hand. What length would you say is good for it? I can start laying in a supply.
I was using roughly 3 inch chunks of wood, that seemed to keep it under the reburn holes at the top.
I went a little over on time, gonna try and shorten the videos in the future.
The length of the video was fine with me.
@@Curt100 thanks, that was my first video. I was trying to keep them under 5 minutes, but that's harder than I thought.
Very cool. I bought one and haven't used it yet. One thing, $4 for 40lbs of pellets. Those are for pellet stove/furnace. Not "food grade" meaning they have stuff in them that may make your food taste bad or at least you shouldn't eat.
Thanks for letting me know that, I had no idea. Won't be toasting anymore marshmallows over those
Enjoyed the review! Would you say this little stove provided any heat for warmth around it on a chilly night? Or is it really just more for ambiance?
It did provide some heat, especially if you were close to it. I wouldn't say it could back you off of it like the Bonfire can .
@@justbill thanks for the info!
We’re coming over asap for s’mores
Can't wait!
Nice review. I was interested in buying one of these for when we are out on the ATVs. I'm concerned with how hot it obviously gets. Can't just pack her up when you are done for the night. Gotta let it sit and cool down.
Once I dumped the coals it cooled off pretty fast but yes it gets really hot. Puts off good heat for it's size.
@@justbill Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna give it a shot, see how it does.
Was thinking about getting one but watching your video I thought about how easy it would be to get knocked over by a kid or a drinking adult or just a plain accident. It doesn’t seem like it would be hard to kick over or something like that
Could you please do another video showing when and how to add more pellets when the fire starts burning down?
To be honest I have stopped using pellets as a main fuel source,
Excellent video,Could you help me formulate one for my product?
nice review bill :)
Thank You! I am going to try and shorten them up a little in the future.
Safe for large indoor rooms? Rooms with 12 foot or higher ceilings?
Thanks the review and Marshmallow technique. Have a great day
I would say a hard no, it can still smoke quite a bit until it gets up to temperature. And who knows what kind of carbon monoxide levels it produces. I would treat it just like a regular firepit except for the part about putting it on a table.
@@justbill thanks
Huh??? No . Still can emit carbon monoxide
Thank you for the video. What do you think about taking this backpacking in the winter? Additional weight, but seems worth it. Only issue would be repacking it and waiting for fire to die down if lasts longer then want
It could work, they make a small fire pit just for camping, I would check it out also. It has a ring for cooking, the Titan has a cooking ring also that will fit the Mesa.
I have the Solo Campfire , perfect size for camping.
I have used mine a couple times. Both times i used the pellets. The first burn no smoke and let it go out, didnt add more pellets. The second time i used, i added more pellets after the first round of pellets burned down and it caused so much smoke. The heck?
We also tried to cook hot dogs over it and they turned so black with soot, we didn't eat them... So confused as this doesn't happen when we cook them in our normal fire pit
Ditto - I tried pellets and I tried Solo's own oak wood. My marshmallows were grey with soot. The fire was hot - had as much blue as yellow flame. Also noted guy who answered phone at customer service had never used the product or toasted marshmallows. Kept referring to it as "burning marshmallows". I had used it twice, but since it was past 30 days he said I couldn't exchange it for the larger Mesa size because I used it. Well - I had to make sure it was the stove and not me. I'm not supporting Solo anymore because they don't support me and I will look to other brands.
Same thing with wood. I have the XL. If the bottom holes get clogged...smoke. If you don't keep it high flame...smoke, lots of it. Since they are so small, the ash fills up quickly and smoke is the result.
How bout doing some cooking on it. Any of these stoves can burn but what are they like boiling water or cooking food.
I will give it a try
Superior Trading Fire Starter Pods... Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities. These fire starters are awesome.
Can you add pellets continually to keep going?
A little bit at a time, to many at a time will put it out
Awesome video!
My Mesa stove arrives in a couple days and I'm really looking forward to it. But I have a question.
The only pellets I've found locally or online say they are for Traeger grills or flavored pellets for meat smokers. Can these be used in the Mesa stove?
Yes, but I think they will be more expensive I will send you a link
www.lowes.com/pd/Still-River-Pellets/5001965889?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-sol-_-ggl-_-LIA_SOL_237_Seasonal-Heat-Coolers-_-5001965889-_-local-_-0-_-0&ds_rl=1286981&gclid=CjwKCAiAs8acBhA1EiwAgRFdw0PPErXug5OhqBw2pvHLFQM9ic3QBps0YhJOzcrY2I6QqkQQnfBfQRoCTlcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I wouldn't cook over the pellets I sent you in the link .
Does this thing get hot enough to give 2-3 people some warmth on a chilly night? Asking for overland camping
Probably not
How fast the heat ring take to patina? Cause my mesa xl has only been through one fire and is really really bronze. I checked it this morning and it had some leftover ash on the bottom part of the top burn ring.
First Burn it started to patina for me also
Pretty cool I like it 🔥🤭👍
It is 😎 thanks for watching
Wow 15 mins? Them pellets burn fast! Very nice though. I still want one! 40 lbs. for $4 can’t complain too much 😂
Maybe $7 now it was this spring when my buddy picked them up.
Do you have it sitting on a piece of sheet metal?
It's sitting on a 1/8 inch piece of some kind of metal, not sure the type. When I made the video I wasn't sure how hot it would get. Hindsight I really didn't need anything under it.
How is the stainless steel sides holding up? Concerned it will get charred/black on sides of it so torn on to get it or a color.
I have one that is colored also, I like it better. The stainless will discolor
@@justbill thanks for the quick response. Kind of figured that
I would like information on the music please. where can I get this song
Inshot video editor, had it as a stock sound
Need to put those affiliate links out there so we can easily buy those products welding gloves, pellets etc..
There should be links in the description, honestly I'm not sure, I'm pretty new at this.
Can you burn paper in either solo stove?
You could but it's not like a incinerate so it would be slow going
A+ welding glove review
Lol, 👍 best gloves I own.
Seems like it will work as candle heater as well. ....OR MAYBE NOT 😳
I am not really sure what a candle heater is or does, but that's the second time I've heard that term in the last week. I am going to have to research it.
@@justbill Godspeed 🙏
Question... can you cook on top of this too?
Sorry I was in bed, you can cook on it, check out my Solo stove Mesa Boiling Water video, it goes through the options

Thank you Bill... Stay warm.
Hi from the UK,has anyone got a coloured stove and if so does the colour tarnish at all with use? Thankyou
Great question I don't have any experience with the colored stove I would be happy to hear some experiences though
@@justbill hi,I have just ordered the mulberry and bone coloured options (buy one get one half price offer) so I will feed back after some usage 👍
In UK too and have the blue one and can assure you the colour stays really nice. No sign of burning off or flaking.
Please correct me if I'm wrong...
This only last about 15 minutes? Then you have to start over?
Not very much time for that being so expensive... HUM...
I don't know what I was looking for... but lasting longer than 15 minutes before having to refuel it...
...sad...
That's correct, there isn't room for a whole lot of fuel, so you have to keep adding fuel which I enjoy but if you leave it unattended it will go out
@@justbill
Good to know.
@@justbill
Then I would use STICKS.... that is easy to drop in... putting the pellets would be a little harder...
This video was GREAT...
This is a nice looking mini fire pit what else does it do? Lol
Hahaha, not sure what else it does, it's good at being a fire pit through. Thanks for commenting!
Lol best comment
Does it soot up the bottom of pots
Depends on the wood but yes it will, if you get it good and hot before adding the pot, it may mitigate that a little
@@justbill thanks
What is underneath it?
Just a piece of aluminum I had laying around, you don't need it
How about using Jenga blocks? That game can be found in every thrift store...lol
I sure would like to burn that game sometimes 😜
How much burn time before you have to feed it again?
About 10-15 minutes from my experience both wood and pellets.
@@justbill thanks Bill
When we fed it more pellets, it smoked horribly! How did you add the pellets and avoid this? Thanks!
@@kimberlyerath601 first thing is to make sure it's really hot and that the fire is going real strong and then just add a little bit of pellets at a time you might get a little smoke just for a minute and it shouldn't smoke terrible
@@kimberlyerath601 ours did the exact same thing!!
looks like my Titan, with a different top ring.
The Titan cooking ring fits Mesa
@@justbill Great, I plan to pick up a Mesa top ring and base at their friends and family event in January.
Here is the information that Solo Stove released concerning the use of the MESA STOVE. czcams.com/video/ya1Z0hyZ4-Y/video.html
A load of pellets last only 15 minutes? That’s terrible. You’d have to be constantly adding more pellets. Too much hassle for a tiny flame :(
You can get more time with the top down method. Still you have to stay on top and keep adding pellets slowly
Hadda subscribe so you weren't at 666 lol
Hahaha, I am thankful. I was wondering if anyone would take pity on me
$80!??! For a coffee can? Get the heggadaheee lol
Seems really expensive
Bro…. It looks like you were very close to burning your hand 👀
They give off absolutely no lateral radiant heat at all.
Unless you’re standing over it, you will never benefit from any radiant heat.
I am going to try and figure out a way to measure the temperature around the Mesa for a future video. We will see.
Still useless during fire bans arent they
Not sure, I believe so
I would check with the local fire department
It’s not even a small campfire. Makes no sense to me.
If this thing burns up pellets in 15 minutes, and the wood only lasts a little longer, to me it’s not worth the money! It’s more like a toy for people who like to play with fire!
It’s perfect for people that just want to roast marshmallows with their kids and don’t want to wait a couple of hours for the thing to go out when it’s bedtime.
It's pronounced mesa , not meisa
Thanks for letting me know, I appreciate the feedback.
@@justbill no problem. Love your videos, cheers
Boring
Yep, working on that.
Not at all, a kid toasting mellows…🥹 I wonder about cooking on one of these? 🤔
Thanks, a buddy of mine has the campfire model, which is meant to take camping and has attachments for cooking
@@jdanielcramer I bought the titan cook ring because there BOTH the same but the Mesa comes with the pellet screen
