      3 people have failed on PREP since 2010. That's better odds than condoms. The 3 people are responding to Hiv treatment. Do you have a link about this person on prep dying from AIDS?

      @Eric Rivera bro prep is not cure of hiv

      @Eric Rivera If a man can take PrEP how could he not take other medications to prevent AIDS after the HIV infection? You are lying. That doesn't mean one should be less careful when taking PrEP it just means you are a liar.

    Hey all. Thanks for the comments. Naz-- I think we are still figuring out what long term effects may be. There are many years of monitoring people with HIV who have taken the specific medications in PrEP (TDF/FTC) without major concerns. But I don't think people can say for sure what will happen with long-term PrEP use. Standing Tall- HIV will basically die and get "processed" by your body if it can't establish an infection. In theory, if you stop take PrEP and get an exposure at a time when PrEP is losing its effect, you can get infected because it basically creates a situation no different than if you were not on PrEP. If you get infected and start taking PrEP while infected, you can develop a resistant strain of HIV.
    For all these- I would recommend talking one on one with a medical provider who knows about PrEP. New information comes out all the time and the best way to stay up to date is to talk to someone about your specific questions. All of them are great and deserve individual attention!
    Thanks for spreading awareness!

    it cost 35usd per month (30 days pill) in my country, with maximum 4 months supply allowed during each purchase. Require HIV negative test prior to next 4months supply. its quite affordable for me so i took 1 pill per day despite me on very occasional hook up. plus with barrier protection off course.

    Question: What happens to the HIV virus if it can not attack t cells? Does the immune system get rid of it or does it still linger in the body until it finds a tcell that is not protected?

  • @rebekahnunes8480
    @rebekahnunes8480 Před 5 lety +2

    This is the first time I've heard of such a drug I wonder doesn't it inhibit the effect of TCells on other infections? The T cell is an important defence against various diseases.

    • @jlaleknas
      @jlaleknas Před 3 lety

      PrEP doesn't harm our immune system. HIV does. PrEP protects our T-cells from invasion by HIV. HIV uses them to make copies of itself, destroying them in the process. PrEP protects us from HIV alone - it has no effect otherwise on our immune system's ability to protect us from other things.

    • @xavierheadbang
      @xavierheadbang Před 26 dny

      Prep only works on an emcime that allows the hiv virus to get connected to the cell, but has no effect on the actual function of the Tcell, it's what's I understand.

    I wonder what are the long term side effects from taking this?

    • @crossroads670
      @crossroads670 Před 4 lety +2

      It can be harsh on a minority of patients kidneys. They do testing every 3 months to check it is ok. If it is causing problems they bring you off it. It has been tested for 20 years and there are very few concerns long term.

    • @jasonmanning6317
      @jasonmanning6317 Před 3 lety +2

      I’m on PrEP-Truvada and they check my kidneys every 3 months. You can also take Descovy which can affect the liver instead of the kidneys.

    how long can i take it?

    • @jlaleknas
      @jlaleknas Před 3 lety +2

      As long as you need to. Many people take it for years, others stop briefly when they know they aren't going to have sex, and others take it only when they know they will have sex. Some people stop taking it when they are in a relationship and others continue it. It's very flexible but remember, you have to take it for 7 days for anal or 21 days for vaginal before it's effective.
