Still remember this day. I travelled from Peradeniya to watch this match. I was there with my batch mate Dr Murshid (l am sure he will also cherish those memories). Dias got to his fifty with three consecutive boundaries off the beefy ( Botham). Botham could not stand it and disgustingly smashed the ball on the ground after the third boundary. when Dias Unfortunately got out, the whole game turned against us. Until then we were marching well towards a historical win. Our batsmen, I believe got panicked and got out cheaply against Embury. We waited so many years for this match. Unfortunately the end result was very disappointing. We were on top for the first four days.
Hats off to our first ever skipper Bandula Warnapura who passed away untimely a few weeks ago. Hope our youth and the future generations will remember his services. When we got the test status, there were posters in Streets of Colombo saying “Test status for Sri Lanka” and a large picture of Gamini Dissanayake and a small picture of Bandula. It was indeed a very rough ride to the test status. Please do not forget the past players who did so much for our cricket.
