It wasn’t for nothing… it was for Martinez to keep marinating in his own struggle to find success. Arsenal provided him the starvation to be hungry.
One important thing to add is that, despite his at times crass and bombastic personality on the pitch, he's the type of guy that, even after doing his damn best and clutching the win, in the interview he always mentions and highlights his failings and errors. He's continually judging and reflecting on his game and performances.

I remember him when Leno got injured and Emi got in. He was on fire bruh. I immediately put him in my FPL and somehow he didnt play any more? Then when the next season came on about he went to Villa. I immediately put him in my new FPL team because I knew on God dude was going to be that guy. So happy for him. He never gave up, this type of arrogance and confidence is deserved for him after a lot of mfs didnt believe in him.
Ngl the only teams you can call oppenents are The Netherlands, France and Croatia, and to have Croatia in semi finals is pretty easy for a semi final. On top of that conceding 2 goals against the worst team of the tournament and losing to them. Winning the only 2 difficult matches on penalty's (1 being the final) doesnt really seem that deserved

You could see from Mbappe's face when he missed his last chance in the extra time, he KNEW deep inside that they're going to lose in penalties. Not only Argentina have Emi Martinez but also very experienced penalty takers. It was game over for France at that moment. But it was justice because Argentina was clearly the better team of the two.
He went to a football club that appreciate and love him, Aston Villa. Since then becoming the keeper he always destined to become. Now his Country are reaping the rewards.

He reminds me of WC1990 where Argentina's first choice goalkeeper Nery Pumpido was injured after their first match and the substitute GK Sergio Goycochea was selected for the remaining matches. He went on to save 2 penalties during the PK shoot out in quarter finals (against Yugoslavia) and PK shoot out in semi finals (against Italy), the only difference is Argentina lost to West Germany in the finals through a penalty conceded in 2nd half.

Actually, we do get to understand what he's really like. He speaks incredible English. He's very articulate and expressive even in his second language. Also a wonderful man. Has all the time in the world for any young Villa fans who ask him for selfies when he's away from football. I'm so pleased for him and his achievements. Hope he stays at Villa for the rest of his career. He said he does feel he owes them for his break.

There are a lot of great keepers, with amazing abilities, but none of them have the personality to really stand out among their peers. Martinez has it. I'm sure that every footballer that faces Argentina from now on, will not only look on the midfield to see if Messi is playing, but will also be looking at the goal to see if Dibu is there.
