Some tips, whenever you are using the active tracking. Make sure that you are flying higher than any obstacle. While the obstacle avoidance works very well, it can miss some branches like in the video. Just be cautious and use common sense. It is an expensive toy!

This is great to know as I'm getting one soon. From what I can see is that the drones are susceptible to trees and stupidity. Also when driving mountain roads, like I'll be doing, have it "Profile follow" to avoid that one accident it had.

How do you fly it down into water. Like...how.
Someone may be flying it past its low batter warning and when they actually do return it it activates a mode to avoid crashing called landing which lowers it untill it comes into contact with the ground but there is no way to detect if its ground or water. plus its either that or a kamakazi drone
It could also enter vortex ring state while hovering over the water. Basically, this means the drone is getting caught in its own turbulent air. This causes a loss of lift and cannot be recovered from except by flying laterally away from the recirculating air.
Yea except that drone went from a very high altitude straight down into the water at full speed... as if someone meant to bring it to a hover above the water, but miscalculated and flew straight into the water.

Thanks for this compilation. I don't feel NEARLY as much a dumbass after having a forced dead battery crash landing after encountering a heavy headwind and unable to return home!

Don't try dunking your drone at home folks. The ones used in this video were obviously retrofitted with drone floatation devices, and "wet suits", so they can land on water and keep filming. No mention of this in the video though.
What happened to collision avoidance?
Tank 62 who knows... maybe they didn't have collision avoidance turned on... they were self piloting.. some of those looked like they obstruction came from above while climbing.. some very ambitious flyers there with the stream and stuff.. I wasn't to know is it ruined when it falls in the water or is it fixable??
If you have sport mode turned on (which I highly suspect was the case in at least some of these incidents) then the done can fly faster but collision avoidance is disabled. Also, even in the context of collision avoidance it's actually rather limited on the Phantom 4. It can only sense and avoid obstacles in FRONT and BELOW its flight path. For many this was a huge upgrade because for its time it was the better than nothing (which was the alternative in the prior models). In the big picture though, that's pretty limited for what aims to be more of an autonomous "drone" so there's still plenty of opportunity for these quadcopters to crash (as you can see).
The Phantom 4 PRO is a much better in that it has obstacle avoidance in 5 directions (forward, rear, left, right, downward).

I think some of the videos were shot with Phantom 3's. My understanding is you cannot see the props with the Phantom 4 when moving forward, with some of the video showing the props
Dr: It all depends on the tilt you have, regarding the camera. Sport mode you have to point it way down or you see the props.

Heads up if you're going to buy new phantom for pro, they offer a program called the refresh program. It's $149 for the year, and if you fly into the water as long as you can retrieve it will only cost you $99 to replace it. It's well worth it if you're paying $1500 for your drone
do phantom drones not have sensors for the drone to stop when there is an obstacle? my mavic is very sensitive to obstacles.
