  • Ford celebrated its 50th anniversary when this Crestline Victoria was shiny and new. Seven decades have taken their toll but we can still learn from this rusty relic from Ford’s Golden Jubilee.

Nothing like the sound of an old Ford flathead with Offenhouser headders and a high rise manifold. You tune those puppies right and they have some of the best sound of any engine in history. Very unique. Love em.

Back in the late '80s, my first in-laws bought a '53 Mainline.
Technically they said they bought it for my teen sister-in-law to drive to school.
But in reality, they bought it because my father-in-law wanted it.😁
The car was an inline 6-cylinder, with 3-on-the-tree.
The previous owner had gotten the engine rebuilt; had the interior redone; and had the car repainted a darker red color.

Correct, 1953 model year with the VIN for the win: B for 239 V8 Flathead, 3 for 1953 model year, S for Somerville, MA assembly, V for Victoria two door and the rest is the production sequence. The Somerville, MA plant operated from 1926 to 1958 and today is the site of the Assembly Square Marketplace and Assembly Square. I toured the Linden, NJ GM plant in 1980 on a school trip and remember a black and gray 1980 Seville Elegante getting the body dropped onto the chassis. My grandfather's friend, Mr. Billotti worked there for years and assembled two cars I owned: a 1982 Toronado made on Wednesday September 11, 1981 and a 1979 Toronado parts car made in March of 1979.
We got the tag, we can brag: 60B for Crestline Victoria, C for Glacier Blue lower exterior paint, L for Sungate Ivory upper exterior paint, M for possible Meadow Green interior trim, and the production code references the vehicle number built in that cycle/lot/time period.

I lived in a middle class neighborhood of mostly Ford workers, alot of Chrysler workers were on the east side, GM to the north. My dad retired from Ford and all 4 boys work at Ford . That was the way it was, now it has changed, not many auto plants left, no more hand me down jobs, no cool cars.

I'm retired for Caterpillar Tractor Co. and while we never made as many engines everyday as the automakers the process was essentially the same with progressive machining lines like those shown in the book. I worked for a while at the old basic engine plant in Mossville Illinois, now long gone and the problem with those lines was before the advent of sensors on the tooling a drill or tap could break and it wouldn't get discovered until 10 or 15 engines were missing holes or threads resulting in a lot of costly rework. Later on we started transitioning to stand alone machining centers where one operator machined one engine block or head individually and quality went way up and defects went down along with rework costs.

They all want to be internet famous or something like that. Nobody wants to work. Or even understand how things operate. It's a shame.
