It's so heartbreaking to hear Skies of Arcadia sold poorly. Though now that I think about it, I only found out about it through a distant friend who also owned a Dreamcast. Thanks to him, I own and love both the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions of the game. I hope the franchise comes back someday.
I picked it up from TRU when it was reduced to $9.99. A really great deal. Hard to choose between Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia as the best RPG on the GCN
I owned a Dreamcast and Skies of Arcadia, and I'm also saddened by its lack of popularity. It really is one of those hidden gems that you REALLY should play if you ever get a chance. Shame, it was such a fun game.
I have played Skies of Arcadia over probably 5 times normally, and I recently discovered a mod to rebalance the game, so that gave me something new to try. I would love a sequel, but I don't have my hopes up at the moment.
It's my favourite game of all time, I love it so much. Gutted that we never got a sequel, but there's been rumours of a remake for a while now, so maybe it isn't completely out of the question!

Skies of Arcadia was such a marketing failure, I'd literally never have heard of it bar Vyse and Aika are in Valkyrie Chronicles. Sega are terrible at advertising releases. If it's not Sonic or Yakuza they barely advertise it.

That Kirby game taunted me for years. It was always in Nintendo Power's list of upcoming games for Gamecube, then it disappeared. I was devastated and never got into Kirby as much since. The trailer looked so good.
Wow I had no idea that Skies of Arcadia almost got a sequel. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm devastated that it was so close to getting a sequel.

lets say youre in your 20s or 30s, like most people here. youll prolly live for another 30 or 40 or 50 or more years. whatre the odds that nobody makes a port/remaster/remake/sequel/spiritual successor to it in your lifetime? ive got no fucking clue since i have no clue what the gaming scene will be like during all those decades, but thats how i look at series i love when im sad ill never get another one (was a huge pikmin fan as a kid) so dont lose hope, at the very least it seems unthinkable someone wont at least make a legally distinct game inspired by it

I wouldn't hold out hope forever because you'll just be disappointed. The game didn't sell well on either the Dreamcast or the Gamecube. Sega is in the business of making money and they don't have much of any reason to try their hand at making a sequel.
Skies of Arcadia 2's cancellation still stings to this day. The original is an absolute treasure!

7:54 This is something that people who blame Rare's decline on Microsoft need to see. People really take for granted that a LOT of the questionable business/creative decisions Rare made came from within Rare itself, not from Microsoft. Conker's cancelled sequel, the direction of Nuts & Bolts, that was all Rare.
Yea, it's really strange how downhill that company went after the buyout, especially with all the amazing games they were making for so long. I genuinely wonder why they started making so many missteps after Microsoft bought them.

I can't imagine what it must be like to conceptualize, plan, design, develop, etc, a game only to have it cancelled. Hours, days, weeks, sometimes months of work only to say... nevermind.

Glad I’m not the only one who thought that was one of their biggest mistakes. We could’ve got so many more DK, Starfox, Banjo and Conker games. Just as much as Intelligent Systems makes FE game after FE game and Monolith making Xenoblades.
The fact that Nintendo partnered with Phillips for Wand of Gamelon rather than PlayStation is evidence enough that Nintendo doesn’t usually make good partnering choices.
It is their second biggest blunder after failing to partner with Sony for CD functionality in their upcoming consoles. Even so, Rare did help keep Nintendo alive after Sony took the lead in the console wars.
Rare was already becoming a hollow husk at that point, nothing would have changed. Nintendo would have just had to pick up their slack, Microsoft was basically buying a vegetable.
But until Smash Bros Ultimate.
That ET game actually sounds pretty fun, I feel like it'd be an interesting mix between Pikmin and Stardew Valley

Sunk cost fallacy
- every minute you spend working on a game that won't sell or is taking too long to complete is lost profit
- spending money to license, manufacture and mostly importantly market a game that won't sell is lost profit
- if a game looks like it won't sell, the publisher will can it to prevent lost profit

Damn, Skies of Arcadia is my favorite RPG of all time. That breaks my heart to hear there was a sequel in the works that got cut due to poor sales. I know all too well how badly it sold, as it's one of the rarer titles for both Dreamcast and Gamecube.

There were a lot of weird and wonderful games for this console that never made it to market. The ones I am most disappointed about not reaching the market were I-Ninja 2 and that car combat game featuring MetallicA. That could have been very interesting...

Never understood why Nintendo didnt just make the gamecube about the width of a regular DVD drive or maybe a little bigger and just mount a tray slot above the controller ports to eliminate the small disc issue
I've heard it was because of Piracy and Nintendo don't want media that can be easily pirated but of course that decision bit them in the damn ass like always and still couldn't do DVD functionality when given a second chance with the Wii...
MrDmoney156 Funny thing is, the DVD function is there but the theory going around is that they did not want to pay royalties.
Nintendo hates or at least tries very hard to avoid the simple and direct approach which is ironically generally accepted as the proper and smart choice. They always have to be unique and special, which as shown throughout their hardware production, doesn't always go right, or has lasting issues outside of their initial issue which was only partially alleviated via their special solutions. Mini-discs and the lack of DVDs, cartridges during the height of discs, the entirety of the wii in terms of power and controller (which was both a good and bad thing, mind you,) the *Wii U*,* the Switch's store and architecture, anything online-related, etc.

@@GoodlyPenguin He was more Sony's de facto mascot. They never owned him, the PS1 was just easier and cheaper for Naughty Dog to develop compared to the Saturn and N64.
The Japanese version of the Zelda Ocarina Of Time Bonus Disc (A pre-order bonus for The Wind Waker) also contains a Dead Phoenix trailer, I've even made a video about the Trailer Selection in each versions although I didn't even know that Dead Phoenix was cancelled until I saw this video.

Doesn't sound like I missed much. But it's always interesting to see what gets left on the cutting floor and just how much gets cancelled.
One of the coolest fake-outs in Eternal Darkness is when it ends a chapter pretty early in the campaign, stops all the music and cuts to an image teasing an upcoming sequel.
An effective (scripted) sanity effect. But it sure would be cool if Eternal Darkness was a duology on the GCN. (Or maybe GCN and Wii.)
Fun fact: the UK had a version of Battlebots. It was known as Robot Wars over here, but the concept was largely the same. The “house robots” largely didn’t get involved unless provoked though, occasionally stepping in during stalemate situations.

Nintendo peaked with the GameCube and Wii honestly. I mention the Wii because of it’s backwards compatibility which gave it that edge and of course, Virtual Console.

From what I remember, there were articles for Kirby GCN, which featured a character known as Morpho Knight. Morpho Knight will then make an appearance in Kirby Star Allies, as a final boss in a game mode.

I'd like to think Conker's sequel would've been renamed, if it'd ever come out, since the first game had a somewhat amusing (and probably intentional) abbreviation. BFD can also stand for "big f____ing deal."
Wait, I remember that Galidor game. It was on, of all things, Gametap. It wasn't great, but you'd fight enemies and steal their parts to traverse standard platforming stuff. I remember one of the first things you fought were those frog dudes and you got their legs to high jump.
The NGC is the most underrated console of all time. While people already dumped their XBOX and PS2, the GameCube is still being played even until this day.
Yes Super Smash Bros Melee is still more played competitively than Ultimate .

I was so excited for that Battlebots game and checked for news about it regularly. I remember seeing the preorder price at Gamestop drop from $50 to $20 and I knew that was a bad sign.

It likely wasn't coming to Gamecube. In all the material I've read, and the builds that Ive played (be sure to check my channel, thanks for citing me DYKG!), Ive only seen PS2, Xbox, and references to a PC version, no Gamecube.

The more I hear of how Microsoft destroyed a lot of Rare Projects for the GameCube the more I despise them. We’ve could’ve got so many more DK and Starfox games if Rare took on the helm of those series as well as Banjo being in Smash early as well as Conker somewhere down the line. The GameCube is a system very dear to me.
