Talks on Sri Ramana Maharshi: Narrated by David Godman - Arunachala

  • This is the final installment of this series of talks I gave on Ramana Maharshi in 2014. It includes a summary of the Hindu myths associated with Arunachala, Sri Ramana Maharshi's association with the mountain, and with stories of other people and saints who have felt the power of the mountain.

Dear David, listening to this in 2023..yes, you are blessed and destined to live there in Arunachala...our outer appearance may look totally different but our karma from previous lives is the magic that decides our present situation or lifestyle.. last time when I wrote to you, you were out of India.. hope you're back to that place.... What you are doing is simply incredible and helping many ppl like me to know more about the scared place.. Salute to you 🙏

Dear Mr. Godman, this has been a quite remarkable series! It could go on forever, if it was up to me... Thanks a lot for all the stories, the insights, and the rare, often previously unseen, images you have shared. I sincerely hope there will be more videos from you in the future. I'll keep watching this space. Thanks!

Thank you for what you are sharing. I am in hospital in Abergavenny, Wales, after a small stroke, looking out over a mountain called Blorenge (the only rhyme for 'orange' in English). I see the sun's last rays and think of Arunachala.

This is so good and fitting for the last of this series of films. I've been to Tiru a dozen times over the last 10 years and have downplayed the significance of the mountain. Watching this has made me reevaluate that notion.
Thanks David, hopefully there will be another batch of films on the way. CZcams is how a lot of people get their information these days and Arunachala Ramana should be well represented for future generations.

David, thanks so you very much. I came to yoga and my guru baba Hari Dass through a book a man gave me called Reflections, a Ramana book. In 1994-95 I traveled to Arunachala, with the blessing of my guru, who also respects Ramana very much, and arrived on Ramana's Birthday, without my knowing it was such an auspicious day. I stood in the main hall with hundreds of pilgrims watching movies projected on the wall of the hall, such peace I felt then. I stayed at the ashram, walked up the mountain barefoot, due to priests telling me to remove my sandals, wow the mountain showed my feet what tapas was, and heart was touched. Later, I walked around the foot of the hill barefoot thinking I was looking for some swami that lived near by, and 2 young men encouraged me to walk around the mountain with them. I felt later that the mountain was really having its way with me. I will always remember that stay there and your videos are a rare and wonderful gift. When ever the mind wants to make things difficult and complex, I partake of Ramana's teachings and all becomes so much clearer. Om Jai Ramana!

I did not know about this mountain or Ramana till few weeks back when on 23rd of Nov I called an ambulance to my home in Sydney Australia due to a spinal injury. What has ensued since is a major awakening and I am now totally immersed in Ramana's teachings and this mountain. I now learn that 23rd was also the day this year when light was lit on top of Arunachala. It is calling and pulling me in.

Thank you so much David for this series of videos. I have loved every one and now they are finished, I think I shall have to go back and watch them all again. One day, I hope and pray that I can come and see Arunachala with my own eyes and feel its grace. Since I found the book 'Be as you are', around 15 years ago, my life changed and I feel I have been inspired by Baghavan. The stories you tell about his life and teachings are beautiful, they have kept me company and held me spellbound. They have such a magnetic attraction to me, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
    Thank you so much.

    Jai Shree Ramana Maharshi !!!
David, Namaste !!! I was in the Ashram from 05-05-2015, and just been in the Ashram grounds, I did nothing nor did I ask anyone for prayers, for some reason something was happening to me, that was not good, which I would never do, this took place the second day we stayed there near by the ashram, but after that experience ,
I became very calm, I felt a lightness and it was like I got back my life, and from then on, the questions that was in my mind for all my lifetime,
now I was able to form these questions into words and sentences, then speak out those word, so I am saying that inside and the surroundings of the Ashram have given me back my life, that was taken away from childhood, now the people who was my attackers is saying I am more mad, because I can now explain what was happening to me,
but the man who married me, says he cannot remember anything in all those years of marriage, and nothing is wrong with him, now that I am cleared from his evils, he is now saying that place is evil, because he is now been exposed by that God that resides there in the mountain of Arunachala, at this time he is still uncomfortably, so my advice base on my experience at that power spot every single persons in the world should be there for at lease three days, to feel that power of shakti, I again wish to get the blessings to go back in this life, I would, providing I am accepted, my story is much much deeper, but it will have to be told so everyone would understand as to why certain things took place in my life, and as to why that experience above happened to me and all my life before 05-05-2015.
    SCBM.
Not even in my everyday life would I ever utter those words, much less in a ashram, to the Ashram If I have offended anyone I am sorry, I request from everyone in the Ashram to please forgive me and that experience that took place there, in 2015, And many many many thanks for everything.
    scbm

Dear David, I thoroughly enjoyed this whole library of videos on your channel and found the nuggets in there to be very, very enriching. I hadn't known about Mastan Swami, for instance, and a flood of other inside information about the scene and without your stories I probably never would have. Thanks a lot for the work ! It has been almost 15 years since I visited the ashram and Arunachala in 2001, my only time, and would wish I could go again.
There is one memory of that trip, BTW, that I didn't find so inspiring and that was a very strange sadhu who seemed to be living close to the top of the mountain when I climbed up there. He seemed to be very busy giving oral instructions to his disciples while trying to preserve his vow of silence by simply keeping his lips closed. That was bizarre and I am still having doubts whether that guy wasn't simply totally nuts, lol.

Ramana Maharshi knew he had to go to Arunanchala which was was the catalyst for what would be his gurus shakti.
Just as St Francis needed to be at ASSISI for his DHARMA to unfold to its highest level of spiritual KNOWLEDGE,so RAMANA needed to be in this location for its energy to push his spirituality to its HIGHEST level of understanding.

About the Deepam, looking through the beautiful translation of the (Tamil ) Arunachala Puranam by Robert Butler, from v. 388 to v.400,there is a description of Parvati merging in Arunachala after Giri-pradakshina; (pp 103-105).Moreover,to be fair to Suri Nagamma,R.Butler quotes letter 98 (the importance of yatra & pradakshina ),where Bhagavan says that Amba did pradakshina & then was absorbed in Arunachala Siva on the day of the Krittika star.(p xxiii).Verse 159,p 48,mentions Kartikai Deepam but without mention of Parvati.

    • @David_Godman
      @David_Godman  Před 8 lety +3

+Gerard Grimardia I agree with you on the dates. Kartikai Deepam may originally have been a celebration of Parvati's merging with Siva but it is nowadays a much more general celebration of Arunachala's greatness. The greatness of Arunachala (Arunachala Mahatmyam) includes many aspects of Siva's manifestation as the mountain, but the appearance of Siva as a column of light is the central story outof which all the other stories develop.

It baffles me how Bhagavan could be so enchanted by that mountain or any other form, given his teachings concerning the illusory quality of all form. Could he simply have had it in his destiny to come here, for no other reason that people feel called to be anywhere else? We all have to be somewhere.

I would like to know whether the attainment of the wisdom in "the ultimate experience of reality or enlightenment" that Ramana Maharshi experienced and taught to others, has any resemblance to the Nirvana that Gouthama Buddha had attained, 2600 years ago. A few months later Bhagavan spoke again about the greatness of Arunachala: This hill is not one which was formed at a certain time and which will be destroyed at another time. It is a swayambu [spontaneously manifesting] lingam. The word lingam can be subdivided: 'ling' means 'union' and 'gam' means 'that which forms'. There are many other meanings for the word such as God, Atman, form, and Siva.'
Swayambu lingams appear spontaneously as an act of God. They are not created or caused by any human or geologically natural activity.
'This hill is not really on earth. All the heavenly bodies are attached to it. The name of that which is the source of both arising and subsiding is lingam.'

The association of a unique spiritual power with Arunachala is, for me, comparable to associating the Self with the Heart-centre on the right side of the chest. That is, the teaching is valid and can be extremely useful, but ultimately it is not strictly true in an absolute sense. That which lies beyond space and time, and which alone is, cannot be pinned down to a particular location either within the body or within the world.
