In this provocative high stakes thriller, a smooth and savy lawyer travels to mainland China to broker a multi-billion dollar television deal. While celebrating the successful negotation, he meets a beautiful young Chinese woman only to wake up the next morning with her dead and him accused of her brutal rape and murder. He becomes trapped in a legal system with no presumption of innocence, with a Chinese woman lawyer who does not believe in his innocence and immediately files a guilty plea, insisting that she is saving his life: leniency for those who confess; severity for those who resist.
Starring Richard Gere, Bai Ling and Bradley Whitford.

About the music
This soundtrack to Thomas Newman's sixth collaboration with director/producer Jon Avnet may come as a surprise if you expected something along the lines of Fried Green Tomatoes, Up Close and Personal or The War. This movie was Avnet's first real attempt at a thriller and that's the kind of music you should expect here: suspense music. The Chinese setting has inspired Newman to compose some lovely melodies that adapt textures of Chinese string instruments, but on the whole most of the cues are done in the style of '70s Goldsmith/Fielding thriller scores, with a contempory twist of course. Most of the music is dark and textural and only in the end, Newman makes room for real melodies. The Chinese element is accented by the addition of three Chinese traditionals, which really need to be programmed out in order to fully enjoy Mr Newman's score.

Watched this movie ages ago and I always come back to it. The score was one of those things that stick with you, beautiful and sinister at the same time.

Watched this film on Netflix last night. Was expecting it to be a medicore 90's Gere film. I was wrong. This is a brilliantly crafted film that is unflinching in its story. Gere and the other supporting cast members did a superb job. Every scene has meaning and weight which makes it a great watch. And this song, man, this song really caught me off guard.
There is a scene in the film where Gere and his lawyer are staring at each other while surrounded by angry Chinese officials and this song is playing. What a memorable scene. Seriously guys, give this film a watch.

Love the fact Thomas Newman is still a relatively young guy..I'm 64 now...so I can listen to all the stuff he'll compose in the future until I'm not around anymore...cos he is probably the best composer of film music working at the moment.
In my humble opinion the best part of this soundtrack is from 9:45 to 12:00. It is extremely deep and moving. Definitely one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Just watched Red Corner on Prime - very moving and one of my fav Gere films now. Loved Bai Ling and now going to find more of her films. Beautiful soundtrack as well.
Absolutely stunning piece of music, Anthemic, Melodic, Dramatic. There's loads more compliments to add to Mr Newmans other film scores.
The leitmotif of tomas is amazing tears are squeezing into the eyes by themselves orchestra brilliant probably the best in their work

I like the last court scene when the lawyer yell. She did very emotional in that scene.
I agree with Mike. The plot was intense not like a Hollywood liberal lecture. The love between the two is painful to watch - we know it won't end the way we want it to. I think this is one of his best movies. There is another Gere movie with Jodie Foster. Can't remember the name but it has an amazing plot and it too does not end the way we want it to. Tobacco crops and shoes that are the wrong size. Great movie. The music in this one is amazing.

Tolle Suite zu meinem Lieblingsscore von Thomas Newman. Er hat hier ein sehr schönes asiatisches Thema komponiert und auch die actionmusik gefällt mir. Der Film selbst ist sowieso klasse, was nicht zuletzt auch an dem tollen soundtrack liegt.

10:51 - end, my favourite part of the music
A poignant film. The soundtrack really helps with creating emotion. The chinese theme of the film definately triggered interest. Gere & Ling were great. But after this film i didnt see Ling return to a role of respect. She appeared in a film as a stripper ect; this was disappointing. For a film that was somewhat off the Radar, it in ways blew me away by the tension it built up in parts.
My favourite movie.
This film is about how Chinese government are separated in two side. One believe China should stay isolated, one side wants to centralise democracy in the socialist society.
This film has so many hints in the court scene as well.
This film is not just about love.
A centralized democracy almost happened. If Xi Jinping wouldn’t have taken office I could see China become a more free nation in the coming decades, but sadly this will only be an alternative history. Only speculation and wonder.
