Roland JD-08 Ambient Improvisation

- I got the new Roland JD-08 synthesizer. It is modeled after the JD800 which I had in my setup years ago. In this improvisation I am using four audio tracks with the "Looper" device of Ableton Live. I can control the Looper and volume with the Midi fighter Twister. Each vertical line of four knobs controls one track. All patches were designed by myself. Effects are Valhalla DSP Delay and Valhalla DSP Vintage Verb.

It's still got enough "Boutique-isms" that I hesitated to buy it. Went older-school and picked up a JV-1010, which has essentially the same capabilities - 4 part ROMpler with a flexible filter and high polypony/multitimbrality in a 1/2 rack. It was a cheap entree into that lush lush Roland soundscape :D

Good idea! I had some slow sequences running to this in an earlier version but then decided to go for a pure ambient track.

@@technodrone313 Oh yeah? Like what kind of fx/reverbs are the best? I'm getting into hardware/pedals, I already have almost every top reverb software in the market.
@@SI-mf4jj I have a tr-6s which has decent reverb for the drums. for my synths i mostly just use the fl studio plugins that came with the pro license. I have a few hdw pedals too but just cheapo.

Your cat behaves exactly like my cat!!! It's an Aegeian!!! Look it up!! White belly, round paws, talkative, doesn't munch like a madman, is muscular and listens like a dog!!! Mine is 22 and ongoing now... Enjoy your feline, they're wonderfull!!! PS: The music too ;-) Regards from Belgium!!!

hey martin, awesome sounds once again. how do you use the looper device actually? when i try to record takes into it i struggle to find a good starting and ending points. it records, but it stops promptly or there is so much space at the start - its never a proper loop when i toy around with it

Hi Martin, great ambient music! I own JD-08 but really I don't know where to start with making patches like that in this synth. Do You have any tutorial how to create this kind of ethereal floating pads on JD-08 ?
Nice reverb. Captures deep space atmosphere. I am having alot of contemplation over getting the jd08. Your video is the best so far .. the others not really getting to where I go as the presets are mostly cliche and others just don't show it off in a style I like.
The presets are just the original sound library from the JD800 and a few extra sounds, so I agree that there is room for improvement here. Unfortunately the JD08 is not accepting sound import or export, so I can´t even sell you my patches. :(
@@MartinStuertzer too bad... seems like a good librarian app would really turbo-charge these little units and make them studio essentials.
@@TimKrajcar I´d really like to see the software version from the Roland Cloud as an VST editor for the hardware! They already programmed the interface so why not use it as an editor?
@@MartinStuertzer JD can only backup the whole state into a single file (including the factory presets), so theoretically you can sell the patches. The only drawback would be it replaces the whole patches memory on import, but I’d gladly replace the 2 or 3 patches I managed to program myself with yours ;) just name your price ! :)

on paper they are both digital but the converters and the technology is different between the jd08 and jd800, what is your opinion about the sound of the jd08 compared to the original jd800, do you noticed any difference ?
It has been a few years since I got the JD800 so I don´t want to make a conclusive statement about this.

Thanks! I used the Midi Fighter to control the looping channels in Ableton.

Amazing improv! Like the sound, the chords, and the minimalist gig. I don’t get, though, how the Jd-08 - which I also own by the way, along with my Fantom 6 - gets the midi cc’s ? Is it plugged and powered by a computer ? :)
Yes, the JD08 is connected to my computer using Ableton Live. So is the midi keyboard and the midi controller on the top left.

Wie macht sich denn der kleine JD-08?
Ich bin noch etwas zögerlich bezüglich der mikroskopisch kleinen Fader. Ist ein genaues ansteuern von werten damit überhaupt möglich oder gibt es ähnlich wie zB bei Deepmind ein universellen Regler mit dem man zuletzt bewegten Fader genauer steuern kann, um das ganze zu erleichtern? Hatte zumindes die Hoffnung dass es sich bei dem etwas größeren Drehregler neben dem Display um sowas handeln könnte.
Tja ehrlich gesagt ist das wirklich kein Vergnügen, den am Gerät zu editieren. Um Sachen live zu schrauben ist er gänzlich ungeeignet weil es keinen Catch / Relative Mode für die Fader gibt, die tatsächlich gemessene 1,9cm kurz sind. Die vier längeren oben links können immer in allen vier Layern das steuern, was man zuletzt angefasst hat, das haben die vom JD800 übernommen. Aber auch hier gibt es dann Parametersprünge und das Display zeigt nicht an, wo der ursprüngliche Wert war. Das könnte wie zB beim Microfreak durch einen leuchtenden Punkt gelöst werden. Aufgrund der absurden Gebrauchtpreise (die Menschen sind halt ungeduldig!) wandert der wohl bald wieder aus dem Studio raus.
@@MartinStuertzer Danke für die flotte Rückmeldung. Leider genau alle Befürchtungen bestätigt. Denke dann sollte ich mich zusammenreißen und das Ding auch weiterhin liegen lassen. Zumal ich mir kaum vorstellen kann, dass Roland die Boutiques noch länger mit Updates supported, aber möglich dass ich mich da auch irre. Gruß + Danke

Hi Martin I was hoping to be able to do real-time tweaking on the JD-08 itself - but it looks you are using the JD-08 controls mostly to control patches/tones (I think I saw an envelope tweak too).
It the JD-08 itself not good for real-time patch tweaking, in your opinion?
Real time tweaking is not really the strength of the JD08, the faders are only 1,9cm short and there is no parameter catch / relative mode that prevents jumps when you load a patch.

Do you record your loops as part of your performance ... or do you record them before hand prior to the start of your performance?
