- San Diego just created a really neat area for pedestrians in Downtown San Diego. In this video we'll tour the Gaslamp Promenade, developed to give public space back to the people of San Diego and all who visit America’s Finest City. The Gaslamp Promenade will reinvent Fifth Avenue into eight distinctive plazas (from L Street to Broadway), fostering community by building a place for social connections, conversation, dining and entertainment.

Thank you so much for all the love you’ve shown our mutual hometown (well, not your current hometown, but, once a San Diegan, always one!)…
San Diego will always be my home! :)
The streets are really cool. ❤
Really glad to start seeing American cities do more projects like this - hope more to follow!
I hope so too!
Thanks for the daytime tour of the Gaslamp! Love all your videos, so thoughtful about what people might want to see. And you are right.👍
Thanks for the video. I'm glad they closed off a part of the street, and is only for pedestrians. I wish you could picture Downtown San Diego when I moved there in 1988. They were just beginning to redevelop it. They put up the Convention center and one Trolly line. They had a indoor/outdoor Mall called Horton Plaza, which I loved, as there were many stores, and some restaurants, plus a food court and multi-plex movie theater on top. They knocked down so many old buildings, Even the YMCA ,and 2 old movie theaters, that were quite run down and seedy. I only stayed living downtown a few months, had a minor robbery, so I moved to North Park, as I worked in Hillcrest.
Thanks Alex! I'm born and raised in San Diego and although I was a "young'n" I definitely remember downtown in the 80's! And we used to go to the Horton Plaza foodcourt a ton as I was growing up. I loved the Cinnamon Rolls and Steak Escape there
The way my younger self gasped at the now-closed Urban Outfitters. 😅😂
I believe the project isn't even done yet, I believe they will be removing all the sidewalks in the Gaslamp and replace all the concrete roads with that red Spanish tile you can see where the barriers are and possibly add more greenery along the promenade...gonna be beautiful, definitely should keep building more like this, especially with such a Mediterranean influence in our city and climate...
That'll be neat!
i cant wait for them to remove the concrete
Just came back from San Diego and wasn't even aware this was new. It was my first ever visit there. Loved the Gaslamp District! Place was really hopping at night on the weekend. The street was packed with people. Made for a great experience.
Awesome!
Thanks for the Gaslamp update, Chris! It's been a while since we last visited there, lots has changed.
My pleasure! Thanks for tuning in Bill and Lisa! I hope you're doing well!
@@YellowProductions Doing well, Chris! Thanks!!
Hi Chris. It's a great idea that they close it for a period of time. It give people the chance to explore and enjoy the various shops. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Well said!
It's really cool that they made that pedestrian friendly! It's too bad that they didn't have that last year when I was there as that would have been really cool!
Now you've got something to see for your next visit 😀
🚫🚫Never go to downtown San Diego, but go to little Italy, it's great Go to shelter Island harbor Island, Go to Ocean Beach, Go to La Jolla go to Del Mar go to the beach in Encinitas these are all in San Diego but never ever ever go downtown San Diego 😳😳😳☠️☠️ thousands upon thousands of homeless 🚫🚫
@@augustal4243 The East Village has a huge homeless problem.. but the Gaslamp isn't so bad
We were there 4th July very nice thank you for sharing
I hope they make it look a little more permanent and spread out the parklets instead of just being in the former parking spots. They could also add some benches and trees in the middle too. This is really cool!
That would be cool
They take down the Bollards at night to early morning.
@@DiogenesOfCa yeah it would still be possible to allow deliveries. they can make the center pet level with the sidewalk and make delivery vehicles and such drive slowly there
There is a plan to redo the streets to look more like a promenade
Love to visit I like bars , clubs , beaches
WOW THAT'S GREAT THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Thanks Sweeney!
Happy to see San Diego is cleaning the streets. There were too many homeless people last time I visited, and was worried if it's going to turn into another San Francisco downtown where I used to live. I'll be going back to Gaslamp area knowing city is doing their job
Speaking of homeless, avoid 4th and G. I've seen fentanyl junkies by the Golden West Hotel and the bus stop by the Horton House.
I had my rehearsal dinner at that Old Spaghetti Factory! I haven’t been to the new pedestrian yet but it looks like I need to go. Thanks for the tips!
Neat!
Love the intro! 💜💜💜😍
Thanks Nancy!
Placing in the bollards was only the first part of the plan, the project isnt complete yet. They will completely redo the street, to look more like a walkable promenade, rather than a road for cars. To my knowledge this has already been fully approved, its just a matter of 'when', rather than 'if'.
I miss the Gaslamp from 20 years ago. Karina's Cantina used to be Olé Madrid and the smoke shop on F St. used to be Café Lulu.
I used to work in the Gaslamp before moving to New Mexico. I go to Pizza on 5th, Whiskey Girl, Tin Roof, Taste & Thirst, Garage, and Werewolf for lunch, and go to the Star Bar for cheap drinks.
Chris, did you cover India St. in Little Italy yet? I like it better than Gaslamp.
I loved Cafe Lulu. I was there almost every weekend (2004-2007) along with the Egyptian Tea Room near state. The Gaslamp was more alive until more or less the time that Sam Goody’s closed at Horton, I saw that as a sign lol
Thanks for sharing. They need to paint the street or eventually add pavers to make it more pedestrian friendly.
I think they are planning to make the street paved with reddish bricks
Nice tour Chris. Many thanks
Thanks Claire!
Thanks-this was great-very fun and informative!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video, Chris!
Thanks Jeannified!
You should give Kelowna a visit. It has a lovely downtown set up like this but it's busier!
Next time I'm in BC! :)
5:50…I think Ike’s actually hasn’t opened yet…they’re expanding throughout the county and I believe the San Diego downtown location was supposed to open in late May but they delayed until mid July (and the movie theatre you passed actually closed before the pandemic hit…)
Ah... ok... thanks for the report on both Ikes and the Movie Theater... it was like a candy shop for awhile after the movie theatre right?
Nught time video needed
Here you go. Night time video: czcams.com/video/G2ayhVTnuAw/video.html
WOW, LOOKS SO NICE, WHERE'S PARKING??????????
There’s small parking lots all over. Large lots at Petco park etc . Basically don’t go at comic con and Padres games take the tram.
So how do the restaurants get supply deliveries?
It's open to cars from 2am to noon
👍👍👍
We love San Diego but San Diego did not love us. Most interesting was the walk to the mexican border . Greetings from Carmen and Sven
Ah. What did San Diego do to you? 😀
Minus the addicts, homeless, and panhandlers; this place is really nice. Dont bring the kiddos at night. Lots of great food and bars.
In other words whatever you do do not go to downtown San Diego..... All San Diegan's know to stay away from there
Not true. I live downtown and I am a native San Diegan.
@@augustal4243 not true. Stop telling lies. I’m a native SanDiegan.
Hi we've got one free day while we're staying at Legoland. What would you recommend we do? We have two kids aged 9 and 11. We plan on going to LA Zoo so would like to see the city of San Diego
If you like Zoos you should go the San Diego Zoo and skip the LA Zoo. The LA zoo is lame in comparison to the SD Zoo. Watch my zoo video here: czcams.com/video/m3spfHQbDPM/video.html
@@YellowProductions thank you
Filippi's Pizza Grotto is the world's best pizza.
The cars never bothered me but the homeless camps have made it a big "no go" for me. How is that situation these days? Has Todd cleaned it up? Is it safe to go back?
It's getting better... but it's still rough off of 5th
You can take the train for a day adventure
$3.99 for a Big Gulf! I remember when you could get a Big Gulp for $0.89.
Yeah... this is like double the "normal" price at most 7-11s
Do you know of any software engineering conferences for job hunting???? have clearance and experience.
Sorry.. been a long time since I've looked for a job ... but good luck on the hunt!
Where to Park ? And how much $$
Park at the city owned garage called "Park it on Market" its often only $1 per hour unless there's a special event downtown. 614 Market St, San Diego, CA 92101
you need to put your face on the thumbnail I almost missed this one because I didn't know it was your channel
Glad you made it in 😀
I didn't see the locations for homeless?
They're either by 4th and G or 4th and E loitering outside 7-Eleven.
It’s amazing how different it looks when you evacuate and clear all the homeless and migrants out of the city block!!! Looks good huh?!? 😂😂😂.
So quiet
Homeless only , I already saw them at night
I once saw a homeless dude getting naked during the day on 5th near E. 😖
You should never ever tell people to go to downtown San Diego I was born and raised here in San Diego and you definitely don't want to tell people to go down there It's an awful place your video shows that all they did is put up some steel barriers They didn't even make it into an attractive brick laid promenade.... But most importantly downtown is now riddled with crime from all the thousands of homeless that are living there nobody but nobody should go down there If I meet anybody anywhere and they ask me about San Diego I tell them don't ever ever go downtown
Wow. I live downtown and you are so wrong. It’s a great place to visit, have a drink and people watch for awhile. Take your doom and gloom elsewhere.
@@lovethesunnyDThat's not true. I live here too and I know how bad it's become. Some people are just more able to ignore it and look past it than others. There are videos all over youtube showing how bad it is. Even this guy mentions it. He even found a crazy aggressive one for your viewing pleasure. Todd is finally trying to clean it up. I really hope he succeeds because I love the GasLamp. 15:28
as a san diegan i like downtown, and they are planning to pave it all with red bricks
How about a night time tour with all the drug addicts and Homeless bums strung about?
No we didn't like this... It sucks
Probably just not for you. Because it's an amazing place for many people to visit
