    Highgate Cemetary supposedly had its own vampire, quite a big story back in the 1970s.

      Yes indeed! I’ve even considered doing a video on it 😉

    • @awotnot
      @awotnot Před rokem

      Yeah. When I visited back in the 80s the guy who did the tour always drank scotch en route - the good old days - and he got very upset at being asked about the Highgate Vampire. After a while he snapped the coffin had been moved to Kings Cross.

    • @brianartillery
      @brianartillery Před rokem

      @@Robslondon - One of the two main parties in this, David Farrant, died not that long ago. The other party, whom I shall politely refer to as a 'fantasist', Sean Manchester, is the one who got it stirred up to fever pitch. This was when the vandalism of the old Highgate cemetery started. It's only comparatively recently that the Friends Of Highgate Cemetery have got the place stabilised, and cleared. If you take a guided tour with them - and that is the only way to see the old cemetery - they dislike any mention of the 'Highgate Vampire'. I do have a copy of David Farrant's little book about the affair. It's an interesting but strange read. Farrant ended up in prison because of the trouble.
      A BBC TV archive programme from the 1970's, called 'The Dracula Business' is worth seeking out. It is presented by Bram Stoker's relative, Journalist and Soho character, Daniel Farson. It's a wonderful bit of TV, from when the BBC did things properly.
      Farson used to frequent the 'Colony Room' drinking club, which was the watering hole of anyone who was anyone, for many, many years. Ever thought about doing a video on places like that?

    • @Robslondon
      @Robslondon  Před rokem +1

      @@brianartillery Excellent comment Brian, thank you. Yes, the Colony Room is an interesting one... wasn't the artist, Francis Bacon closely associated with it?

    • @brianartillery
      @brianartillery Před rokem +1

      @@Robslondon - Yes, he was. I first heard of the Colony Room, and it's terrifying proprietor, Muriel Belcher, from the fascinating book, 'Suggs And The City'. I recently read 'Tales From The Colony Room', a mammoth, but unputdownable book which I enjoyed immensely. Well worth checking out. It's funny, shocking, sad: everything a good book needs. Full of scandal and bad language, too. It's a lot of fun. And it's all gone, now, sadly. It's summed up by a record by the band 'The Correspondents', called 'What's Happened To Soho?', which contains the lines:
      "Oh, no! What's happened to Soho?/Where will all the reprobates go?"

    A most interesting video. Having walked around Highgate Cemetery (and Brompton Cemetery for that matter) and seeing those creepy private mausoleums I can see what inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. If the Count was alive today, he would probably be a tax inspector or a buy-to-rent landlord.

    Absolutely brilliant Rob. Just when I think that your videos have reached perfection, you go and produce another one that seems to be even better. The amount of work that you put into this one must have taken you ages. Everything was so interesting in every single way. I would say that my favourite Dracula was the 2006 version, that starred one of my favourite actors, Tom Burke. He's been a favourite since I saw him in M R James Number 13, along with his real life dad. After I watched this video, I popped in my DVD of Roman Polansky's Fearless Vampire Killers. An added note is that Henry Irving died in the Midland Hotel in my Birth City after appearing on stage at the Theatre Royal where he appeared as Beckett. The last words that he spoke on stage, which turned out to be rather prophetic were, 'Into thy hands oh lord'. He never uttered a word after that.

    Thank you! A brilliant discussion of the original novel in great historical detail! 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏 I found the London Library only a few minutes from the O&C Club in Pal Mall…I will join as an overseas member…and…write my book there 😊 Phillip Rundell was a 19th C jeweler…why would his mausoleum in Henley have inspired Bram Stoker? I’m just curious 🧛🏻😉

    • @Robslondon
      @Robslondon  Před rokem +1

      It’s a pleasure, thank you ☺️ The tomb is in Hendon, north London so not too far from Hampstead and Highgate. Quite a few Dracula scholars seem to think it inspired Bram, and to be fair he did seem to know a lot about London and its locations.
