  • Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant, or expat, living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for six years now.
Together Mariana and I, along with my father Clinton, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in mid summer time as we visit and give you a virtual tour of the beautiful historic market town of Fundão.
Me and Mariana begin by introducing ourselves on a beautiful cobbled street, walking up to the market square.
Firstly we make our way up the steps to the market stalls, all covered in shade from the canvases above. We see the livestock section, the plants, flowers and trees for sale as well as all the tool and clothing parts.
We bumped into some friends, it was so lovely to meet them there and we spent a while chatting to them, and their Dalmatian Spera. It was a very nice trip to the local town, but rather hot, so Mariana and I found a cafe selling ice cold drinks and lollies so we could cool down in our pit stop for a while.
After that, Mariana and I went back to the farm but not really in the mood for work due to the summer heat. So I took a stroll down to the vegetable patch, with the two dogs, Mitzy and Lilly.
Down in the veggie garden I picked myself a big, overflowing basket full of ripe, red tomatoes, Maça, or apple variety tomatoes, a Portuguese variety I believe. I chat for a while about the lovely red gifts of the garden before heading back with my basket full.
On my way back I bumped into my father, with a big bucket full of damson plums and crab apples, windfall fruits which the poultry and sheep just love. So we gave a few handfuls to all the animals on the farm, a sweet treat that they all enjoyed very much during these hot, dry days.
After the livestock had all been fed we took to the kitchen with the tomatoes in hand. A glut so plentiful means for tomato pasta sauces! A beautiful chunky sauce which will go into the freezer for the winter months. I am picking about 2 / 5kg of these tomatoes every day now, so preserving them is a must!
Our neighbour called round with some duroc meat, from their pigs, durco is a fantastic big red haired breed, when pastured they take on this almighty flavour, not comparable to supermarket meats. Grilled on the BBQ they tasted delightful, it was so nice to spend an evening with the family round the swimming pool with the barbeque on the go, a perfect end to a perfect summers day.
At the end of the day we all dipped our feet in the saltwater of the swimming pool, a refreshing dip that cooled us down instantly! A much needed refreshment from the heat of the day. Accompanied by a glass of red wine and my favourite people, my family. How wonderful indeed.
The next morning I spent some time down by the little Muscovy ducklings. Showing you all how much they have all grown now, with their little feathers coming through, paddling in their stream. Then I recap the week somewhat, talk about the free gifts I plan to send every single Patreon member on the first of September and thank you all for joining us on our journey to self sufficiency.
See our journey to self sufficiency / permaculture / organic farming as expats living in Portugal, trying to produce as much of our own food planting vegetables, growing fruit trees as well as looking after all our animals, such as our chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, quail, rabbits and sheep - Shortly pigs too!
    Hobby farming in Fundão
    - Growing vegetables, raising meat and foraging on our cherry farm in Portugal’s Beira baixa.

@@Farmerforfun Sauce made from home grown tomatoes is so delish. My aunts used to ask me which brand i used in my cooking and seemed incredulous when i told them i made the sauce from the gazillion cherry tomatoes my mom's brother gave us. There were so many that the only way to enjoy them before they spoiled was to make them into sauce! (My uncle lives in a suburb of San Francisco just 40 miles away that was once was an agricultural area. They have excellent soil and long, dry hot days like you have in Portugal. So his tomatoes always did well. Tomorrow we're going to visit to him to see what fruits we can harvest from his bountiful trees in his backyard 😄.)

Awwwh thank you for the lovely comment, all the animals on the farm serve their purpose. I sell eggs and pasture raised meat locally within the community here, it pays for all the animal food and means that my friends and my own family get all our own meat and poultry products. I’m trying to be one hundred percent self sufficient in animal produce, getting there slowly but surely, as of right now my family and I do not eat any poultry products from off the farm - I’m really rather proud of that, hehe! This was one of my main goals when we started the farm here 😁 Thank you so much my dear friend. Joseph and Mariana.

@@Farmerforfun That makes sense. I already knew that about the chicken and turkey but was wondering about the ducks. I am all for that: you know the animal has lived it's best life. I want to do that too but am almost certain that my boyfriend doesn't want to eat it, lol. (he doesn't want to eat chicken or pork now because as you know, most of them don't have a nice life usually.) First we need to move from NL to Portugal, with our cats and horses. For now it's just living in a town with a couple of chicken in the backyard for fun and eggs and our horses living in the next town. He wants to move to the Algarve, I think it's ridiculously expense and are more into the direction of central portugal.

      @@Farmerforfun Remarkable achievement.
Your supply to the family and friends nudged me to remember that my greatgrandfather was a butcher. I'm not sure if he raised his own animals tho i imagine he had chickens, maybe a sow pig. My grandfather farmed vegetables to feed his family. It's amazing how before my parents reached modernity they farmed & fished organically as there was no other way, and furnished each other with what they grew or caught when they had extra. I really appreciate your family's accomplishments.

Just wondering, was there any specific reason for not washing the tomatoes? I would have done it for you ;) haha

    • @Farmerforfun
      @Farmerforfun  Před 2 lety +5

They should be washed in all honesty, but I had just watered the plants about an hour before and there’s no chemicals used on the veggie garden, so I’m not personally bothered about washing them hehe. But you are so, so right that really you should do! Much love Bian, thank you so much for watching and commenting. All the best and have an amazing week, Joseph and Mariana.

they were going to be boiled anyways, so anything nasty would have died in cooking process.

@@dweamy1 ow surely, i wasn't saying that because i thought anything bad / nasty would be on the tomatoes, but more because there was some sand on it and i just got that instant feeling of suddenly eating into some crunchy sand during dinner ;) Just as much as i would with eggshells into some scrambled eggs if you're not paying attention ;) It would ruin my dinner ... but that's just me ;)

Brilliant as usual, I'm so jealous. My Mum's side of the family is from Soalheira but haven't been there for 10 years. Hopefully this isn't too macabre a question but do you slaughter and butcher anything other than poultry? When I was young I remember my Avo slaughtering & butchering a goat (cabrito) from a big family dinner. What would you guess your % of self produced food is now? Anyway thanks again

Hello there, awwwh, I remember you told me before your family were from Soalheira, lovely village! No question too macabre for me my friend. Yes, I make it my mission to be a part of every slaughter that takes place here, not because I want to, per se, but because I feel I owe it to the animal if I brought them into the world, the last second they should have me by their side, if for nothing else, a little comfort to them having a face they know nearby. Thank you for the comment my friend. I feel it is very good to look our moral choices in the eye and talk it out, bless you and thank you once again. Joseph.

Ohh gosh no, this is more of a hobby than anything, I’ve fiddled around with DSLR camera for the last fifteen years, had an Instagram called ‘farmer for fun’ for the last two and a half years, this is just the next logical step in my hobby. I’ve invested more money in equipment than I could hope to claw back haha! Much love, Joseph

@@Farmerforfun That's often how it goes! I was actually referring to the farming part. I am genuinely interested. I purchased a small farm in Spain last year. Plenty for self-consumption, but not enough to sell. I was wondering what it would look like if taken to the next level. Keep up the good work and best of luck! You look like you really fit in and contribute to the area.

@@snterp Ahhh, apologies I thought you meant the videos! The farming unfortunately is much the same, we do actually make money at farming, but it’s not exactly enough to live on, I definitely could do it on 4 hectares, but it would be hard, the cherries are our main profit on the farm, they make about €10,000 per year, with not too many outgoings, just a little bit of maintenance, pruning, grass cutting etc. It is possible, but you would need to utilise as much of the land as you possibly could! Hope that helps my friend, much love. Joseph.
