I’d like to see a video of you comparing your thoughts of books you’ve already read to their Goodreads ratings. Did you agree with the Goodreads rating? Why or why not? It’d be fascinating and wouldn’t require you to read anything new to film.
I LOVE THIS IDEA.
YES PLEASE
Is there an update to this?
I love goodreads, but it's becoming a problem in my life lol. I've noticed that since I've gotten into the online book community (booktube/ goodreads etc), I feel like I'll find a book that intrigues me (I find the synopsis interesting), but then immediately check goodreads for the reviews. If the reviews aren't that great, I won't read it (like I won't even give the book a chance, which sucks). I'll only read books that have moderately good-great reviews, and so i find that i'm ending up reading only the really good books. Because I keep doing this, i'm realizing that reading only 'great' books is becoming my norm. So, now whenever I read a hyped book/ book that is 'great' (bc of high ratings on goodreads), I'm finding them to be somewhat lackluster. What i'm trying to say is, i feel like i don't appreciate these so-called 'great' books as much as i used to (bc i'm only ever reading great books--they've become my normal, and nothing really seems to surpass my normal nowadays). Back in the days, before I was involved with goodreads, I'd pick up books based on the synopsis, so I'd end up reading an array of book: both good and bad (picking up a book was a gamble lol but it was always worth it bc you're next read could be the greatest book to date lol). Back in the days, I'd have times when i'd only been reading terrible books ( each book I gambled on wouldn't be that great), but once I got to a really good book (got lucky gambling lol), I'd appreciate it more and feel greatly entertained. Nowadays, I find that I'm not that surprised and entertained by the contents of the 'great' book to the degree that I used to feel pre-online book era. IDK if i'm making sense lol.
But, I love the idea of this video and will def. be giving the books on my TBR with lower-ratings a read!
I don’t look at Goodreads ratings until after I’ve read the book 😂 I don’t know how wise this is but I just don’t want my reading to be influenced by others opinions 🤷🏼♀️
I'm crying at that "ooooh I have read an e lockhart book" moment
Hannah Cuckler omg yes 😂 died for like 5 seconds
I would looove more reading vlogs ❤️
Dianaskat yes! me too!
I honestly don't look at a book's rating before reading it. I think it really messes with my reading experience. If a book has a very high rating, I'll automatically have very high expectations of a book, which are very rarely met. 2018 really has been a year of letting go of that part of Goodreads. I still use it as a way to organize and document my reads, but when it's time to decide what book I want to read next, I just go to my shelf and pick the book that sounds the most appealing to me.
I do like this idea tho. I think it's going to show that you should take the Goodreads rating with a grain of salt and that you should really just form your own opinion of a book without the influence of other people's opinions.
I used to do that too but lately I kind of stoped. I always look at the rating now cause from my experience I found that most books that I read and didn't like were 3 stars rating (i didn't know that at the time I was reading them so it wasn't because of the rating) and I waste so much of my time on them just for them to end up not being worth it. So now I like to look at the rating so I won't waste anymore time.
But that said, I HAVE read a lot of 4 star ratings that have turned out to be a big disappointment .....and when I say a lot I mean A LOT. Soooo I don't really know anymore how to go about it. The synopsis alone isn't enough for me to decide and I'm sick of investing my time in a book just for it to be a let down. Books are something I like to read in my free time to relax and escape a little and when they are bad they just ruin whatever little free time you got ....
I tried to do this exercise on goodreads before and I noticed that some of the lower rated books are low-rated simply because they aren't very popular; I'd find an average rating or 3.5 or something, then realise only 200-ish people actually read the book. The point is: I think the number of ratings should also be taken into consideration.
Omg! Lala's video was so incredible and I'm so excited for this one! Also, it's kind of irrelevant now, but if you use the goodreads app and press the scan button you can easily just scan a book by its cover and goodreads will find it super quickly! I remember reading about 100 pages of the Buried Giant when it was first released but I never finished it. I think I was in a bad reading slump though because I actually remember finding the concept really interesting and being pretty excited about it but then the pace was a bit slow and I never finished...
I had no idea 3 stars was low. I thought that was in the middle.
Same! If you hover over the stars on goodreads, it gives you an indication what that rating mean. 3 stars I'm pretty sure is: I liked it, 4 stars is I really liked it and 5 stars is I loved it
Nila how do you get this? I’d say: 1=hated
2=poor 3=ok 4=very good 5=loved
So excited to see you do this! I've seen others do it but you're like the only one I watch so...yay!
I don't understand why anything over 3 stars is a "low" rating? Isn't 3 stars pretty good?
In the normal world yes but for goodreads generally speaking it’s viewed as “just okay” or “meh”
Oh, well I guess I've been doing goodreads wrong then!!! 😀
Do goodreads however you want to!
@@karakask5488 It's just people use the rating system different but it's intended to skew towards the positive. You see it if you ever hover over the description of the star ratings. Only the first star is for the books you didn't enjoy at all. Also there's the audience to consider. You generally get a wider pool of reviewers for the first book in the series, but after that it gets filtered more and more towards people who liked the series enough to continue. But I don't think 3 has to be bad, it's can be alright, and there's a place for alright books. Not to mention some genre lend themselves to being more decisive, anything with a twist ending for instance will divide people more.
Just some things to keep in mind.
I would definitely agree that anything above a three isn't a bad rating. Mostly because when I rate books, any book that I generally enjoyed, but didn't feel like was anything really special gets a three star rating.
I loved when Lala did this and I can't wait for you to do it as well! I'm so excited for the reading vlogs.
Jane Unlimited is so good!! I hope you'll like it! It's so weird and whimsy, slow paced, but great :)
Love your videos Reagan!! Maybe you could do some videos about things like fashion, beauty, and lifestyle that incorporate books? I love listening to you discuss books and you have such great opinions, and I feel like combining that with your fashion and beauty and lifestyle skills would be so insightful!🌻🌹
This video comes just at the right time because I also have 'The Queen of the Night' on my tbr and was so looking forward to reading it - until I saw the ratings/reviews in Goodreads. I think it's crazy how much they can actually influence you and I love the idea of this video! So yeah, I'm gonna pick up this book next, it's gonna be really interesting to see what you thought of it!
literally tears, in my eyes. just at the mention of graceling
Love your top and this video! Inspiring me to pick up some books that I have been procrastinating on! I would love to hear your ratings of these after you read them to see if they match the low ratings!
I love this concept. I also want to do this when I build my book collection a little more.
What a fun concept! Might have to do this!
Excited for this series should be interesting to see what turns out to be great. I pretty much only read books above a 4 star rating just because I have a limited time I can spend reading and I want to use that time wisely. There have been times where I have read lower rated book but I always end up agreeing with the populace.
Ohhh very different video from you Regan, I like it. I’m excited to see the part 2 of this once you’ve read all of these :D
I don't really pay attention to ratings or stay away from books because of what other people say, so I'm glad you're giving some books a chance and an open mind! Love your videos Regan!
I love this idea! I am very excited to see your thoughts on this experience.
I LOVED The Queen of the Night!!! I can’t believe it has such a low rating :( it was a cool setting with a twisty plot and I loved the opera element
I have Jane unlimited to. Think I’m now going to go organise my tbr shelf so that they’re all in order of rating!
I’m excited to see what your reactions will be to these books when you read them. Great idea!
Excited about this!
I just started reading a Shadow Bright and Burning and I almost didn’t because of the goodreads rating. Also some people I follow rated it poorly. I’m half way through and really enjoying it so far. This is a great idea for a video and I can’t wait to see the second part (ur very brave 😂)!
I like using the scan feature on the Goodread's app when adding books to my shelf. So much quicker!
This is an awesome idea! The ones I haven't picked up because I've heard bad things about is the 5th wave series. I'm still going to read it eventually.
Love you so much Regan!
I love this video!!! You are my favorite book tuber!!! 💗😍
i am so excited to see your experience!
I saw BooksandLala video and loved it. I cant wait to see your video. The queen of the Nighy seems so good and o cant wait to see your review
I was just thinking about this! Especially with buying products or books on Amazon! Like the rating really determines the credibility of an item or book. But I don't follow that logic with film so much bc I love rom coms which are usually in the 50-60/100 range but that doesn't mean they aren't good. So I'm excited to see your findings in this literary research! 💗💗💗
You’ve inspired me to do the same! My 5 are The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood, The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory, An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris and The Rains by Gregg Hurwitz. Funny that the next one is When Dimple Met Rishi 😃
Soooooo excitited to see the next part! 👏🏼😁
I think this is a really interesting idea; I want to check out my TBR now and see what my lowest rated reads would be. :) I would love if you vlogged whenever you picked up one if these books.
I also tend to use goodreads ratings when I want to purchase a book I've never read before as it definitely has some sway over whether I want to purchase my own copy right away or borrow it from the library first.
Inspired video! I loved watching books with lala’s version. I think the low rating for the Ishiguro is because of the style - it sounds more fantastical and adventurous than it actually is - it’s quite slow and more of a study of the old couple involved. Nice but not mind blowing - 3.5ish sums it up pretty much!
Excited about this new series!
I love this idea! I'm excited to hear your thoughts!
Regan’s realization that she’s read an e lockhart book after all was the best part of my morning 😂😂
I actually wanted to read The Queen of the Night as well! The synopsis really hooked me in! I just decided not to read it because of the rating, haha. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.
Wow now I really want to do something similar with my future TBR! I normally don't look at reviews before reading though because it makes me nervous that I'll be influenced by it
I loved how you filmed this!! Looking forward to the conclusion of your thoughts in the upcoming video! Don't rush though, because you know we're waiting xD take your time and enjoy the experience... Or not, if the books really are crappy hahaha
This is such a cool video idea! I cant wait to see what you think of all of these books!!
I've only ever heard good things about Jane Unlimited so I'm surprised it's rated so low!
Interested to see your thoughts! I read buried giants and really did not like it. Jane unlimited I have mixed feelings on... liked a few of the paths but not all. I think this is a fun idea! I loved Sara’s video on the similar topic!
sometimes i just ignore ratings and just read a book because i want to! but after i read it i read the review just to see what other people think of it
I loved The Buried Giant! Though it is very different from Ishiguro's other novels so maybe that's why people rated it low. I hope you enjoy it and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on all these books.
Really liked this video. Love it when you do a different type of video!
The queen of the night sounds so intriguing!
I really enjoyed Jane, Unlimited. It was the second book I read back in January and I thought it was a lot fun and a unique premise.
Was there a follow up video? I can't find it
I read Genuine Fraud on holiday and I kind of guessed the twist but it was still enjoyable, had me shouting out loud even though I knew it was coming!
I usually read a few 5-star reviews and a few 1-star ones... has worked out for me pretty well so far...
I loved Jane unlimited. I think the book goes in so many directions and genres. She does it so well though.
awww with the goodreads app you can scan a book cover and it adds it to your goodreads directly! For next time :)
ps love this video concept!!
Yeah !! I love those types of videos ahha.
I love this!
I tried to read Queen of the Night but I didn't finish it. It didnt capture me and I had really wanted to like it.
It took some processing to determine how I felt about Jane Unlimited. I think I’ve concluded that I did enjoy it... though wished each of the “stories” or choice pathways went a little deeper. There were some unanswered questions but I did enjoy the different takes ☺️
One of my fave reads a couple years ago, It Wasn't Always Like This by Joy Preble, is low enough GR rating that if that'd been my deciding factor I probably wouldn't have read it. Not all books are for everyone, something i learn more and more as I get older. 😆
I was hoping someone else would pick up this challenge. Love this idea a lot. I also read The Buried Giant due to its low rating after I had read the rest of Ishiguro's books. Turned out that I did not like it and agreed with the majority, sadly. Looking forward to seeing what you will think of it.
i am a big fan of you mam you teaching accent is better than others
I'm the opposite I hardly ever look at Goodreads reviews before I read a book. I pretty much read everything and love a wide range of genres. Although I tend to like books that i find out are rated pretty low on Goodreads.
I can't speak for others, but I LOVED The Queen of the Night and rated it five stars, personally! It's a slower pace, but it's so beautifully written and has a fascinating story. I hope you enjoy it!
The Buried Giant is about after the fall of King Arthur. I read it and it's a slow burn but it's good. You have to be a fan of that era I feel and a minor background in Arthur/Lancelot to enjoy it. I read it for a class and it was interesting.
Pro-tip: if you have the Goodreads app on your phone, it has the SCAN function. Then you scan the barcode of the book and add it without typing. You're welcome.
I have the Burried Giant and I have been meaning to read it forever because one of my friends really liked it. I'm surprised it is rated so low because I've only heard good things about it
this happens a lot. Recently i started reading 'An Architectures Apprentice', which i had been putting off reading for 2 years because of its low rating, but here i am giving it a 5 star rating
This is a great idea for a video, I've been wanting to do this but then don't want to read low rated books... torn.
I thought Jane unlimited was really awesome!! Very different from most YA
I relate to outside the comfort zone on BOTM. I read The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah and I don't typically read Historical fiction but it was incredible.
I really enjoyed Genuine Fraud. I think the way it was written was fairly polarising in terms of people's opinions, so I'll be interested to see which side you're on.
I also had Future Home of the Living God on my TBR (and then removed it) so I want to know if it should go back on. The premise is so interesting to me, but the rating makes me apprehensive. I've also looked at Buried Giant and was curious as to why it was rated so low.
I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of this series!
I love these videos! There might just be one that surprises you :) Although I doubt it'll be E Lockhart, just saying
i wish i could get the time i spent reading genuine fraud back actually lmao. short read and it feels like forever. but i love this series idea! i look forward to seeing your opinions on most of these because a lot of them are on my list too.
Girl, is the app to scan book covers to add them! So much faster.
can't wait to hear what you think of these!!
I never look at the reviews anymore. I never did before reading, but after reading I found what people write would skew my opinion sometimes... and then it bugs me for a couple days. So I just review it how I see fit and go on to the next book.
In my opinion Clay looks like Kevin Weisman, He plays Dale Yorkes on Hulu's production Runaways, I know this has nothing to do with de video but...
oh i love Jane Unlimited
I’m excited
I've been putting off reading The Terranauts because of a low rating. I should remedy that!
I both liked The Buried Giant and Genuine Fraud, you should definitely read them
Is there an update video of this video?
I had read lowest rating books before, but they are pretty good ones. I thought Puddlejumpers, Pucker, and Fire within (the 1st book of the last dragon series) are cute. ☺
I understand the low rating for Jane, Unlimited. It's one of my favorite books ever, but it's a weird book where you either like it or don't.
i actually really enjoyed genuine fraud, it was just a very interesting read, it's weird and i guess people can feel confused on what on earth the purpose of the book was, but i just thought it was a really interesting story and a really interesting reading experience. my best friend actually read the book before me and gave it 2 stars, which got me really nervous because she and i are almost always on the same page when rating books, so i was scared i wasn't going to like it. luckily, i really enjoyed genuine fraud. it's a strange book, and i guess people feel mislead by it because it's seen as a thriller, and that makes people think there will be a big reveal, when really it's not about that in genuine fraud.
yes!! genuine fraud is one of my favorite books, mostly because the reader barely knows anything about the main character, even by the end of the story. i wish people would be more open-minded when it came to more interesting stories, instead of expecting everything to tie up perfectly by the end.
very good TBR idea
Yaaaaay New video.... Thankssssssssssssssss
On my TBR I have a book that’s rated a 2.86 out of over 4,000 reviews... Red Rain by R.L. Stine 😭
You could have saved you so much trouble by using the scanning your book feature on the Goodreads app. It can be really fun. Much easier and faster than typing it all out. I hope you enjoy the books. I know I've enjoyed books that are lower rated.
I hope you find some treasures! 💞
I was thinking of doing this but out of the 5 lowest rated books 2 or 3 are Brazilian classics and I'm not in the mood to read classics right now lol
I don’t understand how The Buried Giant can be on that list! It’s such a wonderful book, sort of a fantasy mixed with literary fiction. It’s so beautiful, don’t let the rating put you off )):
e. lockheart is pretty polarizing as an author because her twists are CRAZY dramatic and super surprising and I think that makes people dislike them, I also didn't love we were liars
Davante J Or maybe it’s because she likes to kill off multiple dogs in horrendous ways like a psycho in twists that were so obviously coming there was really no point. I still have nightmares about we were liars and it’s one of the dumbest books I’ve ever read
@@JMV1616 cool opinion! leave me out of it!
I've definitely been putting off The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold.... I absolutely loved The Lovely Bones, but her other book only has a 2.68 average rating so I'm really worried about what exactly is causing people to dislike it
Just wondering, do you still post monthly favorite videos? I loved them!
