The elements were already in the sample. Stacking drums make the beat already present behave like parallel compression. Metro rolled off the original 808 notes and transposed the sample down and did the sub bass with the horn melody. Back in the day they didn’t really play the 808 in several notes. From a creative standpoint it’s really not all that. However the vibe and the song all together makes it dope. Erik B and Rakim used the sample first. The west coast always replayed the samples back in the day. This was one of Rodney O and Joe Cooley biggest song. East coast had the lyrics back then but cats was on subways and at party’s. In the West the D Boys had crazy sound systems with the trunk rattling. The way saturation is added on the 808 today is owed to that trunk rattling sound. It’s dope how things go full circle.

my biggest problem with the beats on the album is that the drums sound too steady and on beat, kinda like a metronome. wish metro would put more snares and percs on the off beats like in his older production

The song Like That Metro sampled from Rodney O and Joe Cooley Everlasting Bass…sounds like he just looped it up and chopped it up a little I don’t think he added any drums on it it sounds just like the original song but Metro flipped it a little bit it sounds good!
Funny fact: that first beat you made is technically in E Phrygian, not E minor.
that would be a key point to mention tbh... not just saying you're putting a note out of key. 808 mafia and etc have been using the phrygian for a while now and it helps people actually understand it isnt just a random note.
