I have an interview with the Detroit Fire Department tomorrow, I’ve been watching all your stuff with interview advice and its motivating and encouraging to see the department on the page!
Good luck!!
Just had mine today ! Just stay confident
@@kevinortega9115 will do man! Thanks for the support. Was it with Detroit ?
Hope it goes well man! 💪🏼🔥
Sorry, but no way in hell I'd work in Detroit...
Nice job. Detroit brothers are so methodical.
In decades, I've never seen a deck gun in use. For whatever reason, there seems to be a very real resistance in using them.
At first the resistance to uns a deck gun has the side effect that its use results in high damage to the burning structure. About the use of it I can only speak for Germany, where we do firefighting a little bit different, that they are quite frequently used in case of industrial fires... But we tend to use a line on our turntable ladders more frequently. But in Germany residential buidlings are usually not wooden structures but stone or concrete buildings.
There's a time and place for everything, many factors to consider if a blitz attack is the best approach or not but when the situation calls for it I've never felt there was hesitation about using it in my experience. A couple weeks ago I rolled up to a large shed fire, close to the street with a hydrant nearby. The rapid application of 300 gallons saved us all some time and work... Month before that we did the same with a dumpster fire, simple matter of working smarter than harder...
One of the biggest drawbacks of using your deck when you are the first due engine is if you don’t have your water source yet you will empty your tank in less than a minute
Everybody wants to be a hero and go inside with a 1 3/4" line. In reality, big fire, big water. Pride aside. Plus it can make a hell of a better environment for fighting the actual fire. Regardless, time and a place. Small booster tank and no water supply, you have to be careful. But if you got water, let it fly. Smooth stream and move it slow to not drag as much air with it.
There are definitely situations for using them, or not, but if you come to Chicago and the suburbs that see their fair share of fires, you will see that deck guns are used all the time. 🔥 🚒
Good call with the deck gun, hammered that thing, hopefully there was some guys getting a water supply for them since the deck gun will empty you tank in under 2 minutes.
We're a very rural department (vary from 30ppl/sq mi to 4 ppl/sq mi). Whenever we have a good water point (pond or deep creek or tanker task force + drop tank) we use our master stream/deck gun. It's a great force multiplier. We can sit up on top of the truck and dump tons of water anywhere we need it. The downside is you can't do an aggressive interior attack, but when your department substation consists of a 1980 tanker, 2012 engine, and 1979 brush truck and when you only have 3 firefighters at the entire substation (if they're even available) you don't get to do aggressive interior attacks and have to make do with what you got.
Plus, with our situation, we can usually knock the fire out. But with a lack of manpower and resources it takes us a while to refill. Sometimes even the first engine has to leave to draft from a creek to refill.
I see a lot of vids of Detroit FD and all people do is complain and criticize that they won't risk their lives for 3 vacant houses going at the same time.
Like, come on guys. I'm pretty sure Detroit knows what they're doing.
Just want to drop a quick line and say thank you. Just got hired with a department in Louisville, KY. Your advice was always spot on from interview advice, polygraph, and all the other good stuff. Appreciate it so much!
1:05 Close but don't lock the door. 3:15 Park with a good Line of Sight on all the burning material for the Deck Gun. Activate the pump and start from the far right to the car and then to the exposed house. If the DG was where the camera is, it would take around 10-15 seconds of water to knock the life out of that fire. By then everyone is dressed, with hoses pulled so you can surgically attack what's left. 4:10 No Line of Sight on the right side of the main house.
I think all firefighters would give that advice to bystanders: if you are already out, stay out. However, any off duty firefighter is also going to ignore their own advice, do a size up/risk to reward and do their “job.” I keep my bunker gear (clean) in my trunk at all times, so yeah, with that extra protection, I’m going to be more willing to stop and do something if there isn’t already an engine on scene
The bump started the fire 😂
He wasn’t a civilian. He was an off-duty Detroit FF.
Agree with a civilian going into a burning structure is a death wish. The guy in blue who enter the residence on the right was an off duty DFD firefighter.
Master stream/deck gun..........VERY satisfying.
You do an excellent job of explaining firefighting. I have PTSD, from so many bad house fires. I'm improving and learning a lot. I believe Firefighters are worth their weight in gold. They are amazing.
I start at Albuquerque Fire Rescue as a cadet in August, thanks to your videos I was prepared for my interview and knew what to focus on. I can't thank you enough as this program is very difficult to get into.
Good luck, brother. make sure you're in good shape!
Hey Mike just wanted to give you a huge thank you and shout out for your channel I finally got my dream job and I’ll be starting the schooling in July. Your content truly means a lot so thank you for your hardwork and dedication.
Good info I appreciate it very much 💪😎
Deck gun 💖💖 we need the use of deck gun more often!!!
I believe if you check with the Bureau of fire Detroit, the man running into the building is a Detroit fireman off duty
Yess your back!!
Good to see you again
years ago Akron Brass put out a training film called "Use water wisely" it put people in frame of mind,it was better with a full tank even if you didnt put the fire out
Like how this video seems more like a training video
Great video
Just got a conditional offer of employment yesterday because of your videos! Helped me so much throughout the entire process, thank you Mike!
Congratulations!!
Bizarre to think some states would not support this. Their motivation must be to avoid worker's comp issues. Most firefighters thankfully would act if possible.
Please do a video on Ultra high pressure units. From what I have seen it is Amazingly affective.
I am watching from Elmira NY Elmira fire department uses the deck gun in those situations plus a 3 and a half and a 2 and a half.
Love the channel
First time I watched the original video and "dad" finally came out of the house, totally not what I was expecting.
Old-timers used to say"Big fire big water" Same today as I first heard it in 1968. My first chance was 1979 well involved building on arrival. Comical as the then Chief stood in the path of the deck gun as activated. Totally drenched of course.
Hey Mike I was at a 2 alarm fire a month ago can you use the video for a fire breakdown?
Soooo is there a link to the whole video? I don’t see it in the description
Ghetto Fires…. Gotta love the insanity.
Good morning from the Great State of Texas. I like the deck gun. Did the engine using the deck just use tank water or did the engine lay its own supply line
Judging that it was flowing just a minute, they only used tank water. Best guess from watching.
I agree master streams are hardly ever used
When are you going live again??
Mike, What are the best options for escaping a fire from the 2nd story?
Grab a fire safety ladder that can be deployed out of your window.
There's no duty to act without proper PPE regardless of state.
I was guessing detroit from just the title,
I was just wondering, is the diameter for the pipes goung to the deck gun 3 or 5 inch diameter?
I’d assume something in between like 4 inch because a lot of departments don’t use 5 inch at least around me.
Are you referring to the actual riser plumbing coming up from the pump casing?
If so it’s typically 2 1/2” or 3”.
@RIT Irons Yes, the size of the pipe bringing water to the nozzle on the deck gun.
Firefighte now great video brother im new here
More wildland firefighting videos
I want to be a firefighter, the only thing I am worried about is I have a history of a couple knee surgeries from crazy football injuries ( I am only 22) and I am perfectly athletic today and am fully recovered but will that impair me getting hired? And I’ve also experienced some drugs in my past teen years and I haven’t done any in years but will admitting to past drug use disqualify me from being considered? Thank you
I know that in a volunteer department, you would definitely have a chance of getting in. A bit part is knowing your limits on how much you can do, you don't want to hurt yourself
There's no need to tell them about your past drug use. That WILL disqualify you. if you are sober now then thats all you need
Do firefighting videos from all over the world
And imagine if that is an EV in the driveway.
😮😮😮😮😮
No one is getting that handline ready for a follow-up attack? Officer directing deck gun, and 2 guys standing around.
But I'm really not playing Monday morning quarterback
I just stick with receovs
It’s great, but however Detroit Fire played a very dangerous game but luckily it turned out well for them this time.
Bad truck placement
Too bad they pushed all the fire/products of combustion into other parts of the house transitional attack 👎🏿
2 1/2 right between the two houses and wash all that down. 1 3/4 to the main fire building and another 1 3/4 to the exposure.
Straight streams do not "push" fire!
I am not impressed with Detroit FD
