North America, 18th century. Amid the chaos and violence of the French and Indian War, Shay Patrick Cormac, a fearless young member of the Assassin Brotherhood, undergoes a dark transformation that will forever shape the future of the colonies. After a dangerous mission goes tragically wrong, Shay turns his back on the Assassins who, in response, attempt to end his life. Cast aside by those he once called brothers, Shay sets out on a mission to wipe out all who turned against him and to ultimately become the most feared Assassin hunter in history.
Introducing Assassin’s Creed Rogue, the darkest chapter in the Assassin’s Creed franchise yet. As Shay, you will experience the slow transformation from Assassin to Assassin hunter. Follow your own creed and set off on an extraordinary journey through New York City, the wild river valley, and far away to the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic in pursuit of your ultimate goal, to bring down the Assassins.

Interesting thing is, if Shay really stuck to his guns of "protecting the innocent", he never would have joined the Templars, to whom innocent lives matter very little.
Shay was a traitor, not a rogue. He was simply following a personal vengeance towards the Colonial Assassins because of what he perceived as 'betrayal'. If he would have been more like Bellec, who wanted to bring down the French Assassins because he wanted to reform them, I would have understood. But Shay joining the Templars and remaining a Templar till his death is just pettiness, not anything noble or lofty.

Yeah i agree. And i think its a shame how Ubisoft doesn't care about depth of their games as long as it brings them money. As someone who hasn't played only ac1, odyssey and mirage but all other games i can surely say i enjoyed Rogue more then i should. I would be #1 for me if only ubisoft gave it a bit care and its own character like not doing copy of whole previous game. But it is what it is.

Yes we would be playing as the bad guys, but that wouldn't have been a bad thing. Haytham is a real fan favourite character, and no one complains about playing as him in the opening sequence of ACIII.

Unpopular opinion: Rogue is not that bad, the story itself gives us a different perspective.
I have heard many people say that assassins are shown as fools in this game. If you think it the other way, templars are shown as fools so that playing as an assassin makes sense. That's what have happened here. I believe that Ubisoft have written the story well. Only thing is the game was too short, nothing else to complain
