The 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo S is a serious machine. Unlike other sports EV's, which seem to offer thrilling acceleration but ultimately mean to replace driving, rather than improving it, the Taycan is the driver's EV. It's the EV designed and built by people who have won every major endurance race ever hosted. Its new 800V architecture, stunning good looks, and positively bonkers pace combined with the seriousness of build quality you get from Porsche, combines to make the best production EV money can buy.

Not really, that honour goes to GM. Of all companies. The EV1 was... very ahead of it's time, and started the EV conversation to begin with, showed that their is a market to be had. A pity that GM would go on to do EVERYTHING that they could to bury it.
Tesla can at least say that they popularized the idea to the point that the traditional manufactures took notice, which to be fair was necessary. That said, if things were different (say GM had more faith in the EV1)... I am not sure that Elon would have made the same push, because if he didn't do it, someone else might have.

I like that in otherwise silent electric vehicles, those "fake engine noises", that few like normally, does then have a valid function as an audio cue about your speed.
Apparently the sounds are actually amplified sounds from the electric motors and "transmission" with the 2 speed. The speakers just introduce that sound into the cabin. I was never a fan of electric cars but this is the first one I like because it keeps the joy of driving and control present with the power of electric motors very nice 😍 and it's pretty cool

Yea this dude is a strong tesla hater. But of course he's gonna say tesla fanboys are gonna go after him. But his views are just biased
@@shiv5927 Tesla builds mediocre cars. Build quality is shotty , for being electric they arent proving to be very reliable let alone more reliable the ICE , And considering Tesla's are supposed to be "luxury cars" excluding the model 3 , they are sub par compared to other luxury cars of equal value when it comes to features. when you buy a Tesla (other than the model 3) you are getting a car thats no where near as good as it should be for the price. I wouldn't mind a model 3 , it seems to be priced well for what you get , and complaints seem to be pretty minimal but other than the Model 3 i wouldn't touch a Tesla. ya Tesla has the biggest range , but thats really all they have going for them IMO. Also i cant Stand Tesla's approach to Owner maintenance , by which i mean they basically absolutely don't want you working on the car at all , and they make getting parts very difficult and or impossible depending on the part you need.

There ist one thing to clarify: the Taycan recuperates with 265kW and does this when you brake. This is really sharp braking without using the actual brakes.
@n s Don't know (nor will I ever be able to test this car;-) ). I also don't know if you can actually choose how to brake. What I learned from some German videos was what Porsche employees said: the Taycan does about 80% of the braking events by recuperation. They decided to only use recuperation when you actually use the brake pedal. It makes some kind of sense if you recuperate with 260kW to do it this way because one pedal driving won't be fun with that much recuperation power. Probably also helps the sports car feeling. Realistically, the Taycan is probably the only commercial EV which is designed as a sports car. It is always compared to the Model S, but the Model S is not really sports car. On the other hand, it is the benchmark for EV performance. So what else one should compare the Taycan to...?
I just saw some videos where people have driven it even on a race track in Germany using basically only the recuperation. When it starts using the real breaks, it goes almost already to ABS.
Anyhow, I think the Taycan must a hell lot of fun to drive, if you can afford the price ;-).

This car actually has regenerative breaking, but you can turn it completely off.
True. I wonder if anybody would mention it. By the way, this is only partially true, since everytime you hit the brake pedal, it is a regenerative breaking , and the most agressive one in the automobile industry right now.
It regenerates every time you use the brake though, rather than when you lift off the gas
Actually, you can't but even for an EV it's weird. Most EV's applies regen when you lift from the accelerator (aka "one pedal driving"), the Taycan doesn't do this because the regen system is part of the brake system so it's applied with the brake (and the hierarchy is regen first before the pads). The only think that you have control over is how aggressive the regen gets which is a standard thing with EV's in this class, but you can't turn it off.
Love your reviews man, real knowledgeable & professional. Hope you hit a mill by Xmas

Generalising people as dinosaurs is lame, plus dinosaurs are awesome.

That initial hard launch was nuts. These EV's really do accelerate like no other with all that instant torque from those electric motors. Always a fun feeling driving ANY ev. Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf included haha.
The combination of huge acceleration and lack of engine noise might see many of these end up in ditches?
you still get scared of the speed, its not the engine note that scares you, I was not feeling overwhelmed when doing 8000rpms going 40 in my old box and I do get scared on my tesla when I realize i'm 110 in town
Mark Blackmore yes. I was actually a little surprised how cavalier matt was being while going like 120mph. Its almost as if the speed wasnt quite registering with him. You cant underestimate the power of the screaming engine and the struggle to keep accelerating hard as your speed increases over 100mph. But when your EV has 750 foot punds of torque it will pull up to 140mph without too much trouble (aero allowing of course)
dallatorretdu right but thats what he is saying. You knew how fast you were going in your old car and what you said was you “realize” you are doing 110mph in the tesla. Thats EXACTLY what he is talking about. In a gasoline car there is no chance you get to even 90mph without realizing it, there just isnt a set of senses yet for us and these electric cars
Jorn Navarre yes they do. Honestly not just electric cars, but performance cars too! No, i only know what i did when i was a teenager with my 4 door family sedan with 225hp and id probably be dead if i had driven something like this car
Jorn Navarre Tesla has that, both valet mode and option to limit top speed, also via the app:)
