They're already causing damages just by threatening to break the license. People are having to delay publication of works published under the OGL or consider major rewrites to their products. They need to get sued into the toilet.

YES!!! Come to the OSR. Change what you like and have a great time. And whatever you do, if you're a publisher, DON'T sign the 1.1 agreement and give WOTC your stuff.
The OSR is built on the OGL. If the rumors are true, even that's in flux.
@@backcountry164 That's true, and could be a problem if one doesn't already own the books. At least one OSR game is going to switch to a Creative Commons license because of all of this. We'll have to see who WOTC goes after first (though the answer may be EVERYONE!)
I hope someone with deep pockets or some combination of publishers coke together and make a stand

Spot on. a lot of youtubers out there dont seem to realize The real concern is Hasbro cutting a deal or forcing the hand of Drivethrurpg , CZcams , and KIckstarter to shut out further OSR / retroclone products, reviews, live plays or new projects - by scaring ( fear ) fan creators but mostly the Platforms mentioned.!!!
Which I find quite disappointing. I called this out as the monopoly power and denial-of-service as the primary concern the DAY that ONE D&D was announced.
CZcams and Twitch is pretty settled law, Sony, Nintendo, EA etc has already tried to stop critical review, and thats a non starter, now as far as kickstarter, its over, they already bought and paid for them.
The fun thing , is how much are they going to sell, with every gaming youtuber absolutely butchering them.
Also if they come after CZcamsrs it’ll be a royal shitshow. Wotc will never survive attacking the blogs boards podcasts and shows.
@@Joethelawyer Sony and nintendo both tried this, Sony with TLOU2 leaks, and Nintendo with streamers, both had to drop it, because critique and commentary is 100% fair use, and honestly thats all ragetubing is, critique with more anger and volume.
I remember all the money grubbing of T$R in the eighties. I get it, they needed the money, they were way over staffed and putting out product that didn't sell well. A lot of companies will try things like this because most small companies will not fight it. Most will close up shop and move along to something else or just pay up, because that's easiest and costs them the least. I agree they don't want to test this in court, it'll cost them a lot of cash and it might cost them all the small licensees who willingly paid. But...there is always someone who gets so pissed off about it they will not pay and will fight it. If they go forward with this it will eventually end up being tested in a courtroom.
I hope a big company or a well funded person tries it out. I don’t think it will hold up in court but the thing is, it’ll cost a lot of money to get that far
It is things like this, specifically, that explain why there are so many people who have become part of the OSR and just don't support mainstream companies like WotC.

Official D&D's comeback and the success of 5e are entirely due to the OSR and the OGL. It'd be a dead product without those two components, and they're absolute fools to think they don't need them. Apparently that's what they are.

Feels like DnD 5e has been a big bait and switch game. They gave us what we wanted, got the hype built up enough, and are now trying to swap out for a moneygrab. An uncreative one at that. It breaks my heart. Also OneDnD looks like something we never wanted or asked for IMO (and just a further excuse of pushing this "OGL" 1.1)

This is why I feel their stocks took a plummet over the last year. People do not like be called names or accused of things, they tend to tell you to F-- off and leave you behind.

Nice! I tried to grow tomatoes last year. Got a couple dozen small ones off the plant on my back deck. More trouble than it was worth tbh
@@Joethelawyer it always seems to vary from year to year, I've had more Tomatoes than I can give away in some years, and last year I barely got any, same for the zucchini last year. But my Sweet Corn Harvest was probably the largest I've ever had 🙂. This is the thrill of gardening, you'll have a million of one thing and none of another.

I'm willing to bet that, say, Chaosium or Steve Jackson Games or Palladium would LOVE to get Crit Role playing their games!
Yeah but I think Mercer has a better shot at creating his own rpg. He has the audience for it already there.
@@Joethelawyer Possibly. Or partnering with or incorporating some startup. But those have their own problems. You cant just crap out a game system. And any game system will get the Woke Scrutiny. Matt works to avoid anything controversial, but who knows.

Either way 'we', the gaming community, will see another early/mid 90's explosion of gaming systems. So while WoTC will lose some the gaming community will gain those.

I don't understand either why people publish under open GL. I mean I think you could literally clone the game and just change the name of each game mechanic and any IP related creatures items just don't include or change the names. So change the name of each attribute, AC, hit points, advantage/disadvantage, etc.
Judges guild did that in the 70’s and it worked just fine
Maybe its time to create a community open source document to bypass the entire OGL where everyone uses the same alternatives for AC, HP etc.
@@seppa193 yeah I was thinking the same thing. Just call hit point , life points and armor class, defense rating etc. in the grand scheme of things 5e does not have many base mechanics
@@jeffallen559 Exactly. If others dont use Life Points, but Health Points or other term then everyone uses a different alternative. With an open source document we can prevent zillion names for HP, AC etc. and have all newly created content compatible with each other without checking each new alternative everytime.

How can you go to the OSR if 1-1a are “deauthorized”. Everything from the OSRIC to PF to C&C and everything else done with those OGLs is gone.
