- The Roundhouse Engineering Co. Ltd. factory in Doncaster is the place where the famous model live steam engines are made. The engines have been designed and built in the UK since 1982. I had the opportunity to visit the factory with a friend for a private tour this week. A big 'thank you' to Alex and all the employees we met on the day for putting up with our questions and my camera poking it's nose into their working day.
By today's thinking a CZcams video of over 40 minutes is impossibly long. However, I wanted to keep as much of the footage as possible available for your viewing and to give you a real-time insight of how long the tour actually took.
As stated at the end of the video you have a chance to visit the factory at their Open Day on Sunday, 2nd June 2024. I strongly advise you to go along.

Good day Geoff
The Roundhouse people are really welcoming and willing to help, whether in person, via email, or on the phone. Had a tour last fall and really enjoyed it Cheers
Totally agree Michael
Interesting to see into the nooks & crannies of Roundhouse-Eng!..... A fun tour! Looks to be a good shop to work in..... it is amazing how everything is so well coordinated. Alex has given me great assistance via E-Mail in the past couple of years!! Thanks Geoff!
Thanks for posting this Geoff always interesting to see where things are made 😀
Thanks a lot, extremely interesting and informative.
That blue 0-6-0 katie with the red counterweights is for a friend of mine, hes super excited to finally get it
Excellent video Geoff. I've ordered a Bertie that will be built in July. Great to see where it will be made 👍
Bertie was my first engine. I luv it and will never part with it. Very reliable, a strong puller, and once bedded in will run well at realistic slower speeds. Good choice Steve.
I can remember ordering my Lady Anne in 1989 via Brandbright in matt black as a one off. Lovely loco, but moved house so sadly sold it. Hopefully will order another Roundhouse loco one day!
They are willing to make custom modifications to engines they build (within reason), An example in the video being the Billy with a red chassis
Great video Geoff. Really interesting to see all the components in all their glory, in box after box on the shelves. Feels very real not all sterile. I am hoping to make it to Doncaster on the 2nd, quite a long way from the south east where I live, but if you can make it from the Netherlands I now have no excuses. Thanks for all the work you put into our hobby. Regards Garry.
Thanks for the compliment. Why not make a long weekend of it? You could visit the National Railway Museum in York and go for a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway...I did :)
@@gasmith841 OK, I popped up to Doncaster (500 mile round trip - but so worth it) I did Crich Tramway museum on the Saturday and spent a great couple of hours at Roundhouse on Sunday. Every member of staff was so warm and open. Bigger factory than I envisaged. Regards Garry
@@garryhammond7616 Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the great video coverage Geoff !
Like yourself I like Roundhouse ❤
I only have Roundhouse engines in my collection. Very reliable. If I need support Roundhouse are only a telephone call or email away. Even though I am in The Netherlands, they are willing to send stuff over no problem
Hi Geoff, compliments for this interesting movie! I have many modells Roundhouse and I thing they are the better locomotives in the world! Cheers Fabrizio - like 13
Yes a Darj A class
Pity they didn't dust their showroom occasionally.
lol
Poor camera work, jumping all over the place
Thanks for the comment John. I have to agree it is a bit shaky, but I did warn the viewer of this at the start of the tour. I'm just your average Joe live steam enthusiast with a camera in his hand that happens to share his experiences on CZcams. I do not claim to be any sort of prof. cameraman with fancy gear, etc. If you are not satisfied with the quality of the video you can always move on to another video
