  • Here is one of the biggest hang ups I see for people starting out learning to use a mouth call for calling turkeys. Getting over this hump can help you to begin really making a spectrum of sounds that will impress the gobblers come April.
Calling turkeys with a mouth call can be challenging but quite rewarding. When beginning to call turkeys with a mouth call, its critical to understand some of the key components to adding the variety to the sounds you are striving to produce. The mouth call gives turkey hunters the most versatility with any call and can produce a wide spectrum of sounds that will get gobblers fired up.
In this video, Edward explains how to use a mouth call to really sound like a turkey. Making sounds with the turkey call is the first step, but now you need to focus on perfecting the sounds to sound more turkey.
Edward is using the Jezebel - 3 reed batwing in this video and it can be found at www.oldplaceou...

@@callemorcrawlem I got tons of questions but some can only be answered by trail and error all I can do is continue to practice and find a call that's going to work for me thanks

Try the HeadCrush let or Jezebel from my site, both are really easy to start with and get lots of good feedback from beginners

Is the call in the roof of your mouth towards the front close to your teeth or towards the back?

I’d say mid way, but this isn’t constant, I may move it forward or back depending on what I’m trying to do. Check out the part one and two video for a little more info on call placement

Try to bring the air from the diaphragm - The best way I can describe this is to almost feel as though you are squeezing your core (abs and such) as you exert the breath. Think of it more of a huffing than blowing it.

@callemorcrawlem Goodmorning and Thanks! I'll try that but just to make sure I understand this correctly the air should be between my tongue and the bottom of the Reed with the cut of the Reed up.

@scottlocke3645 my understanding is the air goes over the top of the reed between your tounge and the roof of your mouth.

You're not going to believe this but I decided to try a different mouth call. I was using a ghost call and I switched to a simple double Reed call. Wow what a difference!
I'll keep on using it and hopefully get it figured out then I'll try different cuts and see what happens.
Maybe the shape of my mouth and air flow works best with the double Reed.
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and experience!
      Happy Hunting!!

@scottlocke3645 I'm not an expert at all. Struggling to get a mouth call to work for me as well. Also struggling to get my 1st turkey. Tbh, not even sure I'm going to hunt turkey again after this season.
