My dad used to be friends with Nick Drake back in the 70s. My uncle was obsessed with Nick and spent loads of his time trying to learn Nicks songs, but had no clue his brother (my dad) had been friends with him until after his death. Purely because my Dad didn’t know he was into Nicks music, Nick wasn’t very famous at the time.

I think about Nick Drake a lot, he seemed like such a pure and genuine soul who was born at a time where we simply didn’t have the knowledge we do today to help him. At the very least his music has gone on to influence and touch so many lives, including mine. I know when I’m really going through it and need that comfort his music, and Pink Moon especially, feels like an auditory warm blanket that I can hug as tight as I need to

Honestly when he said that Nick died from too many anti depressants broke my heart because I've been on a few different ones and that aching feeling of "if i take more will i finally be happy?" has hit me and probably others too. It's knowing that he probably needed some sort of other peace of mind.

Bradleys son is now older than his dad was when he died.... thats how long ago it's been. One band that had moderate success after their death, was For Squirrels (sometimes spelt Four Squirrels ). They had a minor hit called "The mighty KC " about Kurt Cobain (?) but in 1995 an automobile accident took the lives of 2 of the 4 band mates as well as their tour manager. I grew up in Gainesville, where they were from, and I remember how sad alternative fans were :(

Sublime was such a unique band. Brad would have been a huge superstar if he had only lived a few more months. They were incredibly authentic and genuine. They made music that they loved and basically created a whole genre of music that many have tried to imitate but no one has reached the level Sublime did.

It’s probably because of the publicity of their death alerts people to their existence. People also tend to go rally for the underdog and especially if they died young even more people will become interested. It’s sort of like the quote that a lot of people’s first bouquet of flowers is received during their funeral no one cared to do it while alive but then out of regret give them when it’s too late for the person to appreciate them.

I immediately thought of Andrew Wood, the late singer of Mother Love Bone. Days before their debut album came out, he died of a heroin overdose at just 24 in 1990. Grunge is already a pretty sad genre since so many artists have died too soon (Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Mike Starr, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell, and more), but at least they got to see success before they went. Andy would've been a star; he's recognized now as very talented, but it's not like he's here to see it and that's heartbreaking. Don't do drugs.

Damn, it’s really friggin’ crazy how life could go from somebody being fine one second to the next, something could happen, and they could be gone just like that. In the blink of an eye, everything could change so drastically that I feel like it’s a little sickening that some musicians (as well as celebrities in general) could go their whole lives receiving very little attention for their work, and then when they die suddenly, they get all this media coverage and publicity, but it’s just like, dude, if you didn’t bother when they were alive, why now? Years later, after they’ve already died, fans would also be getting their hearts invested in someone and perhaps even want to meet them or ask questions about the person’s work. It’s bad enough that the media objectifies celebrities as is, but to acknowledge their work just because they die is really messed up. I understand that some people genuinely didn’t know about certain celebrities before their passing, but when the media goes years without covering a celebrity’s work and when the celebrity is deceased, suddenly the media is just all over it. I know that it’s not always anybody’s fault, but it just kind of stinks.

David Hackney from the proto-punk band Death (not to be confused with the metal band Death) had died in the year 2000, unfortunately the band was unable to publish any of their songs for several decades except for the song politicians in my eyes. Eventually his brother ended up releasing their music in 2009 and are now known for being ahead of their time and while they aren’t superstars or anything like that they are still known as punk legends and it is unfortunate that he will never get to see the fandom that the music him and his brothers made received

He was a Seattle area musician whose band Mother Love Bone was releasing their major label long play Apple and Andrew had a drug relapse and subsequent overdose a few months before it was released. The band dissolved of course, but morphed into Pearl Jam. And like the others you've mentioned Andrew and Apple have met with posthumous success.

Ebony Regins is one of my favorites and I only found her while trying to find Avici on the deaths of 2018 Wikipedia. She was my age, great songs. Car accident. Super tragic and that stuck with me since

Another couple of examples would be Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. He died tragically of an overdose before their debut album dropped. If you look into the Seattle Grunge scene you will see just how popular and influential he was and how his death lead to the formation of pother bands (Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam) and the creation of some beautiful tribute songs (Say Hello To Heaven and Would for example).

The Dream Academy song "Life In A Northern Town" is an elegy to Nick Drake according to the band. Also quite depressing when you feel glad that someone died a year before or after 27 so they don't get lumped into that "club"

Nick drake is one of the few singer-songwriter types I like. Glad you covered him, he's one of those kinda artists that isnt mainstream but without them music would be wildly different.

Just an interesting detail if you didn't know, that is Gwen Stefani in the picture with Brad, on the left at 11:50. No Doubt was playing many of the same shows as Sublime in their early days, and even collaborated in couple of songs, No Doubt's "Total Hate 95" and Sublime's "Saw Red"

The song Life In A Northern Town by The Dream Academy was written about Nick Drake. If you don't know the song I'm talking about by name, it's the one that plays in the king of the hill episode where Buckley's Angel appears.

Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley are two artists who should be on your radar. Smith is most well known for songs included in iconic movies like "The Royal Tenenbaums", and "American Beauty". He "mysteriously" died after a fight with his gf when he supposedly stabbed himself twice in the chest. Jeff Buckley died from drowning in the Mississippi River after jumping in fully clothed...supposedly he was just drunk and being a daredevil but a lot of fans question that. Regardless of how they died, their music was incredible and wasn't really appreciated until after their death.

Perfect choices, I love Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley so much, they both had some insane talent that was unfortunately cut so soon. Elliott Smith’s self-titled is one of my favourite albums and I remember checking it out after hearing “Christian brothers” covered by Queens Of The Stone Age which inspired me to check out Elliott Smith’s version and the OG by his band, Heatmiser.

One of my favorite singers Natasja died in a car crash on 24th june 2007 and on 24th september 2007 her family released an album for her wich Got her even more succes than what she already had (atleast in her home country of Denmark) i hope she Saw her succes from the clouds bc she never felt like she truely belonged in Denmark (since she was mixed race where one parent was Danish and one was from Sudan)
