- Everyone loves a good success story, but unfortunately not everyone gets to see the heights they would eventually reach, so these are musicians who never lived to see their success.

had a few vocal typos in here sorry i got nervous. anyways this vid was kinda sad so make sure to stream these artists so they can live on thru their music 💯
What’s up mattyyyy
yeah, i noticed you said july 30th 1966 for sublime's album, its all good sir.
@Goofyeditswrld I miss scrubby dude
never get nervous, your videos are top tier
@Goofyeditswrld I hope he’s doing good
RIP Nick fucking Drake
As sad as his story was it’s so good to see someone who was in love with their craft and knew what the pinnacle of that was and enjoyed the process of creating art regardless of what attention it gets. Sometimes amazing talents never blow up while they are here.
How could you be mad when you didn't put effort?
also changing folk forever and inspiring countless artists too.
Rip to all the talented artists 🙏

My dad used to be friends with Nick Drake back in the 70s. My uncle was obsessed with Nick and spent loads of his time trying to learn Nicks songs, but had no clue his brother (my dad) had been friends with him until after his death. Purely because my Dad didn’t know he was into Nicks music, Nick wasn’t very famous at the time.
I think you lie

RIP Bradley. Sublime was my favorite band as a teenager. Loved them so much, I learned all of their songs on guitar and bass.
I have Sublime tattooed across my shoulders like Bradley did and my son’s name is Bradley.
I would give both my nuts to see him live.
Ehh. He was super selfish and too absorbed inside himself to see any light. I do feel terrible for his pup, wife ,and kid though.
@@CreepyKat86 yikes
@@Monkey_11 meh, I got two kids and a husband who loves me. That's all that matters. Have a good one.
I think about Nick Drake a lot, he seemed like such a pure and genuine soul who was born at a time where we simply didn’t have the knowledge we do today to help him. At the very least his music has gone on to influence and touch so many lives, including mine. I know when I’m really going through it and need that comfort his music, and Pink Moon especially, feels like an auditory warm blanket that I can hug as tight as I need to
Shit like this makes me sad, im hoping that the afterlife is somewhat real so maybe he was able to see his success somehow, truly deserved it. Have a good day man, hope you and family is well and spread peace and love to all ❤️ sorry if i sound really jolly and shit lol just shit like this makes me sad and i just want to be in the happy side of things. Especially Nick going through alot and I am currently too, especially being a early recovering addict. All love and stay safe forever ❤️
Honestly when he said that Nick died from too many anti depressants broke my heart because I've been on a few different ones and that aching feeling of "if i take more will i finally be happy?" has hit me and probably others too. It's knowing that he probably needed some sort of other peace of mind.
Bradleys son is now older than his dad was when he died.... thats how long ago it's been. One band that had moderate success after their death, was For Squirrels (sometimes spelt Four Squirrels ). They had a minor hit called "The mighty KC " about Kurt Cobain (?) but in 1995 an automobile accident took the lives of 2 of the 4 band mates as well as their tour manager. I grew up in Gainesville, where they were from, and I remember how sad alternative fans were :(
Sublime was such a unique band. Brad would have been a huge superstar if he had only lived a few more months. They were incredibly authentic and genuine. They made music that they loved and basically created a whole genre of music that many have tried to imitate but no one has reached the level Sublime did.
Robert Johnson came to my mind when I think of musicians who died before they were famous. From the legendary myth of him selling his soul to the devil, to his mysterious death , and one of the earliest names to be in the "27 club". It's a fascinating story.
A friend of mine took me to see Sublime in either 1994 or 1995. I had no idea who they were but they blew me away. I was so bummed when Bradley passed but I was thankful I got to see him live.
Rip pop smoke the judge should had gave the people responsible life
Remember hearing about Nick Drake, heartbreaking story. Its why we always gotta show love and give em their flowers now. If you feel like he did just hang on, hang on baby
It really is sad because he was so driven to create music and made some phenomenal stuff but due to circumstance he wasn’t noticed (like so many other talented artists). I hope he’s looking down and is able to see he became successful and loved like he wanted to be in life.
ive loved your channel for a while since finding it from dontai's reactions, but the fact that you included nick drake on this list AND used him as your very first example just made me love and respect you and your channel so much more. nick drake's work has affected me so much in my life and it's such an unbelievably pleasant surprise that a channel like this would mention him and potentially spread his beautiful work to an audience that would've possibly never otherwise been exposed to it. as someone who's been touched so deeply by his story and his music, thank you.
and i love that pfp, Frank Ocean is great. RIP to all these talented artists
thank you!
Overrated
W pfp, also same story here. Nick Drake’s music resonates so deeply with me, just his voice and acoustic guitar feels like sitting by a warm fireplace with a longtime friend
Glad you included Bradley Knowell on the list, one of my favorite bands ever is sublime
I was waiting to say "you missed Eva Cassidy" then you got to her, respect. Such a shame she never got to appreciate her success. A beautiful voice.
Pink Moon is one of my favorite albums of all time. It doesn’t get more raw and personal than that.
Pop Smoke was one tough soldier. He’s an inspiration to me to be a tougher and stronger person. I really do feel devastated about the way he went out. He deserved better but the past came back to haunt him. May Pop Smoke rest easy 🙏🏽🕊️.
No stop all this LL the Fallen Blixky way better than this nigga just 50 cent on a drill beat
You can't tell me an artists' death doesn't increase their popularity. It's a weird dynamic in posthumous music that really fucks with me sometimes. Like we appreciate someone more when they aren't here anymore. Real sad.
It didn’t in one case, because his album was already selling pretty good at the time he was assassinated: John Lennon.
It’s probably because of the publicity of their death alerts people to their existence. People also tend to go rally for the underdog and especially if they died young even more people will become interested. It’s sort of like the quote that a lot of people’s first bouquet of flowers is received during their funeral no one cared to do it while alive but then out of regret give them when it’s too late for the person to appreciate them.
Brad breaks my heart so bad. I can feel his hurt because I've struggled with dope myself.
You can feel his o’d on heroin?
It’s sad to see all the people we lost to drugs what a shame prayers to their family and rip to all
Nick Drake changed my life, five leaves left is one of the greatest albums ever. I highly recommend it to everybody whenever you feel like shit, Nick's music gives the feeling that he understands you.
Nick drakes story’s was probably the saddest one
I immediately thought of Andrew Wood, the late singer of Mother Love Bone. Days before their debut album came out, he died of a heroin overdose at just 24 in 1990. Grunge is already a pretty sad genre since so many artists have died too soon (Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Mike Starr, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell, and more), but at least they got to see success before they went. Andy would've been a star; he's recognized now as very talented, but it's not like he's here to see it and that's heartbreaking. Don't do drugs.
Chloe Dancer gets me on the brink of tears every time I hear it. Wish it was longer than 2 minutes
@@User-jk8wq it's such a good song. Great on its own, but it also adds so much to Crown of Thorns. I just love the transition bc I'm a sucker for key changes and pianos. Andy may be gone, but as long as his music's still here his memory will live on :)
Every February 23rd I blast sublime all day..

I appreciate how you use operational definitions when you make videos, its important to have that understanding with any audience . Its always in academic work so it shows you take your work seriously enough to clarify your perspective on it and making the interpretation of it easier to grasp ...!
thanks! gotta make sure everyone is on the same page
Damn, it’s really friggin’ crazy how life could go from somebody being fine one second to the next, something could happen, and they could be gone just like that. In the blink of an eye, everything could change so drastically that I feel like it’s a little sickening that some musicians (as well as celebrities in general) could go their whole lives receiving very little attention for their work, and then when they die suddenly, they get all this media coverage and publicity, but it’s just like, dude, if you didn’t bother when they were alive, why now? Years later, after they’ve already died, fans would also be getting their hearts invested in someone and perhaps even want to meet them or ask questions about the person’s work. It’s bad enough that the media objectifies celebrities as is, but to acknowledge their work just because they die is really messed up. I understand that some people genuinely didn’t know about certain celebrities before their passing, but when the media goes years without covering a celebrity’s work and when the celebrity is deceased, suddenly the media is just all over it. I know that it’s not always anybody’s fault, but it just kind of stinks.
Forgot one very important artist....Otis Redding....passed before sitting on the dock of the bay was released...never experienced the success of his biggest hit...one of the greatest artists of all time, may be gone but never forgotten
He probably didn't include him because he probably thought Otis was already famous. I did too. I didn't know he passed before his career peaked
This was a really good video. Quite sad that they were never able to see their success that they obviously deserved, but at least they were discovered in a way and were able to get their music to reach the masses.
Man, a lot of these I didn’t know. Thanks for the info and all the work you do.
If you do a part 2, please talk about Ian Curtis and Joy Division. New Order is the continuation without him.
Joy Division were successful before he died though.
Eva’s music is magical, the whole album is beautiful.
David Hackney from the proto-punk band Death (not to be confused with the metal band Death) had died in the year 2000, unfortunately the band was unable to publish any of their songs for several decades except for the song politicians in my eyes. Eventually his brother ended up releasing their music in 2009 and are now known for being ahead of their time and while they aren’t superstars or anything like that they are still known as punk legends and it is unfortunate that he will never get to see the fandom that the music him and his brothers made received
Great video man, def can see where you're coming from with the Pop Smoke one
Bro I love your videos so much, smoothly edited, informative, and unlike all the other documentary style videos you just seem like some dude I could hang out with and not a pretentious douche. Keep up the great work man 💪
a lot of times, artists blow up because they die. It's hard to get noticed, even if you have the best music ever created, getting people to actually hear that music is a struggle. But dying is a sure fire way to get some attention, that's why a lot of people see more success after death.
this is one of the saddest parts of the music industry for sure
nice to see some Nick Drake love on here, one of the greatest musicians from the late 60's / 1970's and a true genius of the acoustic guitar.
@@kelsormjaquan yeah you seem like a well adjusted, happy person 👍

Awesome video. Great choice of subject matter.
Finally the vid drop love it man
big nick drake glad you covered him!
Nick Drake is a legend. Matty, you just revealed that Sublime went back in time to drop self titled 30 years early. I have alerted the time police they are on their way.
And, it would have been the first official MCA release as well! As, MCA didn’t exist as a full blown record label then. “Sublime” - if actually released in ‘66 - would have been a Decca Records release.
Santeria by Sublime was my favorite song, the entirety of my childhood. Bradley’s story is so unfortunate, as someone who’s compulsive themselves, I understand how easy it is to get yourself into a bad situation. That band holds so much weight to me, always brings that warm nostalgic feeling.
The Sublime self-titled album was legit a masterpiece and it is one of my favorite albums of all time. It just really sucks that Brad died before the album came out and turned them into superstars. Bro had such an amazing voice. RIP.
Great content as usual bro
MATTHEW. BALLZ.
Another ballz banger💯💯💯
your videos have really came a long way man
Such a good CZcamsr, keep going Brodie 💖
Your content is great diverse, cool and enjoying too see
Interesting and sad content, but certainly well put together and thoughtful. An artist that comes to mind immediately is Andrew Wood. He was a Seattle area musician whose band Mother Love Bone was releasing their major label long play Apple and Andrew had a drug relapse and subsequent overdose a few months before it was released. The band dissolved of course, but morphed into Pearl Jam. And like the others you've mentioned Andrew and Apple have met with posthumous success.
Wouldn't mind more content like this Thanks.
youre the only music youtuber who is actually chill
14:37 Wow did Sublime travel back to 1966? Cool music has lotta power!
glad to see brad get mentioned, doesn’t get recognized enough as an individual artist, and my personal favorite musician of all time
Hey matty ballz, I was wondering if u could make a video on a artist called capital steez, he was in pro era with Joey badass but has a tragic passing. He a great lyricist and really underrated, I think it would be a interesting topic to talk about since it’s a big What if.. in the hip hop community
always thought ab it ill def write it down!
Thanks
@@mattyballz that’d be a great video, I kind of expected steez to be on this. He would’ve been the goat
Damn bro you came outta nowhere (for me) and of all the music commentators on CZcams you’re def top 5, possibly my favourite

Ian Curtis (of Joy Division) also comes to my mind
Solid video
i so glad you mentioned nick drake
Not sure if it was mentioned previously but, July 30th 1996* for the sublime album release date. Just being constructive.I enjoy your videos and appreciate you’re hard work . I came here for pop smoke and learned some new things. Keep up the great work.
14:40 1996* sorry to be that guy. Loved that album and still do
Ebony Regins is one of my favorites and I only found her while trying to find Avici on the deaths of 2018 Wikipedia. She was my age, great songs. Car accident. Super tragic and that stuck with me since
unfortunate
Another couple of examples would be Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. He died tragically of an overdose before their debut album dropped. If you look into the Seattle Grunge scene you will see just how popular and influential he was and how his death lead to the formation of pother bands (Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam) and the creation of some beautiful tribute songs (Say Hello To Heaven and Would for example).
The Dream Academy song "Life In A Northern Town" is an elegy to Nick Drake according to the band. Also quite depressing when you feel glad that someone died a year before or after 27 so they don't get lumped into that "club"
“So Sunday sat in the Saturday Sun, and wept for a day gone by.” - Nick Drake
Part 2 Please!
14:20 - The addition of the dog made added to the heartbreak there, goddamn.
Nick drake is one of the few singer-songwriter types I like. Glad you covered him, he's one of those kinda artists that isnt mainstream but without them music would be wildly different.
Make part 2❤
You should do a video on sublime as a whole the story is very interesting
I’m a simple man, when I see Matty post, I watch
W vid, love Bradley
If you make another video like this I think Shinji Sato of the Fishmans would fit well too, he died before they ever got big commercial success. They were a little popular but they only really took off after his passing
fishmans
W for Brad Nowell mention bro Sublime was the shit growing up I was born in 94
Just an interesting detail if you didn't know, that is Gwen Stefani in the picture with Brad, on the left at 11:50. No Doubt was playing many of the same shows as Sublime in their early days, and even collaborated in couple of songs, No Doubt's "Total Hate 95" and Sublime's "Saw Red"
I don’t know if Selena counts! She was only 23 when she was murdered and her music still lives on
I love matty ballz
The song Life In A Northern Town by The Dream Academy was written about Nick Drake. If you don't know the song I'm talking about by name, it's the one that plays in the king of the hill episode where Buckley's Angel appears.
bro so talented he got us to learn about Van Gogh in the same video he talked about pop smoke
Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley are two artists who should be on your radar. Smith is most well known for songs included in iconic movies like "The Royal Tenenbaums", and "American Beauty". He "mysteriously" died after a fight with his gf when he supposedly stabbed himself twice in the chest. Jeff Buckley died from drowning in the Mississippi River after jumping in fully clothed...supposedly he was just drunk and being a daredevil but a lot of fans question that. Regardless of how they died, their music was incredible and wasn't really appreciated until after their death.
And “Good will hunting” features quite a few Elliot smith songs from what I can remember.
@@broadyyo4988 can't believe I forgot that one. I think it got like an Oscar nomination for the soundtrack if I remember right.
Perfect choices, I love Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley so much, they both had some insane talent that was unfortunately cut so soon. Elliott Smith’s self-titled is one of my favourite albums and I remember checking it out after hearing “Christian brothers” covered by Queens Of The Stone Age which inspired me to check out Elliott Smith’s version and the OG by his band, Heatmiser.
wow he “stabbed” himself??
Let them rest in peace. Stop making everything a conspiracy.
11:18 that cover is so awesome
A certified hood classicss
This is saddening and upsetting.

One of my favorite singers Natasja died in a car crash on 24th june 2007 and on 24th september 2007 her family released an album for her wich Got her even more succes than what she already had (atleast in her home country of Denmark) i hope she Saw her succes from the clouds bc she never felt like she truely belonged in Denmark (since she was mixed race where one parent was Danish and one was from Sudan)
Sometimes i am a simple man. I see positive discussion about Nick Drake, i hit the thumbs-up button.

damn, what a saddening video. really, it's just sad.
You should have added Jim Croce the dude lived a rough life and made a bunch of music and hit super famous at 30 years old and died in a plane crash like 10 months later
