  • Here is my reaction to Disney's future slate of live-action movies, reboots, sequels, and spinoffs. They are making a Zootopia 2, Frozen 3, and Toy Story 5, along with rebooting The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan. We are also getting spinoffs from Aladdin and The Lion King so a lot is happening.

The one I'm only looking forward to is Zootopia 2. But hopefully, they don't make Judy throw away her dream of finally becoming a police officer because she was bored, run into a forest to become a rabbit spirit leaving Nick behind, and go back to her ex who had their personality erased because modern Hollywood thinks that what makes someone “strong”.

It's also why aside from Walt Disney himself, Michael Eizner and Hayao Miyazaki are widely known and regarded as two of the most accomplished and influential CEOs, Creative Directors, and Filmmakers in the history of animation. They were visionaries and masters of storytelling. They excelled in creating exceptional 2D hand-drawn and painted animations that displayed beautiful backgrounds and highly expressive characters, as well as adding phenomenal musical scores and broadway-style musical numbers. This style is representative of The Walt Disney Company's Renaissance Era, 1989 - 1999, and the Post-Renaissance Era, 2000 - 2009. Two eras in which The Walt Disney Company saw its largest growth and saw the biggest boom in movie-going audiences. The most memorable and Iconic Disney movies and IP came from these two eras: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Toy Story, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 101 Dalmatians, Hercules, Mulan, A Bugs Life, Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Monster's Inc., Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, (Not a movie, but a video game: "Kingdom Hearts"), Finding Nemo, Brother Bear, The Incredibles, Cars, Meet the Robinsons, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Tinkerbell, Up, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Brave, and Frozen. Its crazy that Disney is so creatively bankrupt. There are thousands of fables an fairy tales that are yet to be explored, yet Disney wants to play it too safe and make money; which is ridiculous to me because they are loosing money on these bad remakes and they could try to make something original since they are loosing money anyway. Most people don't want remakes or reboots.

Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if remakes and sequels are what end disney, OR Dreamworks (or Sony ) becomes the main animation studio. We are already seeing that happening. And Toy Story (the only PIxar franchise where I actually think the sequels are fine) should have ended at Toy Story 3. Personally I dont mind live action versions of Beauty and the Beast, The little Mermaid, Aladdin, Snow White etc.
What I dislike is live action remakes. Partly because there is just no reason for them to be, partly because they are cashgrab movies and partly because Del Toro demonstrated you could still do a very profound artistic movie based on any of those.
Also I feel its a slap on the face of any actor and specially the actresses as, being a reboot, and these films being cashgrabs, they will be known as Disney cashgrab remake princesses, and thats just awful. These actresses deserve so much more, they deserve to be immortalized as their own rightful princesses in stories meant to expand and to break new artistic grounds, not to be the princess of a movie thats meant to be easy cash, because you know people will still flock to see it even if it lacks all form of originality.
This is why Im kind of a bit forgiving on the new Peter Pan as it seems to be Peter Pan but it also could be an original story, though the jury is still out on that, and I do agree, its colorless and drab for a place thats supposed to be full of magic and wonder.

One of the reasons why Disney keeps remaking old movies or doing sequels is because it helps them keep the copyright. It’s the same reason they’d “bring them out of the vault” to put on blu-ray/DVD. Steamboat Willie (aka the original Mickey Mouse) is a perfect example of this. He will enter public domain Jan 1 of next year (2024) which means anyone can use his EXACT likeness for profit and Disney can’t do anything about it. Disney is scrambling to save especially the older properties/characters (as well as milk them dry for profit) and hold on to them as long as they possibly can so no one else can profit from it. I’m not a copyright lawyer so I can’t speak on the exact details of this but knowing this really gives a different perspective of Disney.

Hey Brittany, the reason why they’re doing live action reboots is because many of these properties original versions are now in the public domain. They only have copyright and trademark rights to the Disney versions that were made in many cases 60 or 70 years ago. So in order to retain the rights to these intellectual properties they have to use them whether even if they lose money at the boxoffice. That’s why they had to do a live action version of Pinocchio at the same time Benicio Del Toro was putting his version out on Netflix. Control of trademark concepts is big business in the entertainment industry. That’s the reason why there is a bad girl, a bad woman, and probably a bad boy that they’re not using right now. Valiant comics put out a character in the 1990s called X-O , man of war. In other words X-Men with a completely different story but very similar name.

I am glad they are bringing in good people for the music. If they cut any song other than A Guy Like You or The Court Of Miracles. A guy like you is a song that I like because it's fun but if they have the gargoyles be more serious and need to cut that so there aren't any weird tone shifts and it's also not as good as all the other songs. If they cut The Court Of Miracles I will be judging a bit bc it's a good song but I could be okay because it is a shorter song and not quite as important to the plot. You could have that changed to dialog of some of the lyrics to explain things.
I do agree that Hercules could be a better one to change into live action but I am a bit concerned on what Pain, Panic, and Pegasus are going to look like. Same thing with any of the creatures that Hercules fought. I am also a bit concerned what Hades could look like but if they do something similar to what they did in Descendants then that could work. Mufasa's childhood would be nice to see if it's animated. I'm sure it will be exactly like the Lion king remake, boring with characters who have no emotions. I won't watch it! Same for Lilo and Stitch. I hope the plot won't be: Lilo is a teenager and found aliens boring so she go to school to study marine life and abandoned Stitch. That would be very depressing! If she bacome super strong and independant too! This kid was a good dancer with a lot of imagination but she was also cute and her relation with Stitch was adorable! Don't ruin them Disney 😠You already maked Mulan and Simba boring, don't destroy Lilo and Stitch! I won't encourage you and pay to see that abomination!

    Prince Anders spinoff? Seriously?
I remember watching a Studio C parody of the future Star Wars movies, where they had made a spinoff for every single Stormtrooper that ever appeared in the movies. And the boss gave them a hard time for missing one Stormtrooper whose leg (or an arm) was visible in the frame.
It's not a parody at this point.

The original James and the Giant Peach was part live action and part claymation, so I don’t see any reason to remake a movie that’s already in live action.
