  • Sadly lukes last perfomance,
and amazing right until the end.
    Lyrics:
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most
And when he came to his true love's dwelling
He knelt down gently upon a stone
And through her window he's whispered lowly
Is my true love within at home?
Wake up, wake up love, it is thine own true lover
Wake up, wake up love, and let me in
For I am tired love and oh, so weary
And more than near drenched to the skin
She's raised her off her down soft pillow
She's raised her up and she's let him in
And they were locked in each others arms
Until that long night was past and gone
And when that long night was past and over
And when the small clouds began to grow
He's taken her hand and they've kissed and parted
Then he saddled and mounted and away did go
I must away now, I can no longer tarry
This morning's tempest I have to cross
I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms I love the most

While everyone is so sad, but keeping their focus on the performance, Luke is giving his best, as he always did. He's keeping his eyes closed most of the time and dancing and singing every word with emotion and power. This is how he wanted to be remembered. This is beautiful, but very sad to watch. Although he looks barely able to stay on his feet, that voice at its weakest still has more power and emotion in it than most other singers could summon at their peak. For someone with such colossal talent to die so young is a terrible loss. Given that he was extremely open to new influences, and a versatile talent, one can only imagine the great things he could still have done for many years to come.

I'm not a native English speaker, so perhaps I am completely wrong. To me the song is not just about a man visiting his lover. It's about a man, who knows he is about to die, and he wants to say goodbye to his love before he passes away. Very sad, but very beautiful. The fragile voice of a dying Luke makes this version the most powerful version of the song, and it brings tears to my eyes. I think of all the people that I have loved that are no longer with us.

Ezekiel, Luke Kelly R.I.P. was an Irishman, the lead singer in the group of brilliant musicians the Dubliners. He was a very intelligent man and an amazing vocalist, you could listen to the cd Luke Kelly The Definitive Collection and listen to 'the Rocky Road to Dublin' and 'the Shoals of Herring' to hear how brilliant a singer he was. This particular clip on CZcams is very moving because he had a brain tumour at the time. It was his last time singing in public. He died of the brain tumour. R.I.P.

I grew up listening to Luke Kelly and The Dubliners. He was a great singer but died so young. In Ireland long ago there would be barn dances with Irish music, singing and dancing and all the neighbours would gather. Irish people were not very rich and sometimes they would meet in the neighbours houses and party. I have some very happy memories of this and I learned a lot of Irish songs. Ireland has changed now because we keep our doors bolted at all times.

I sang this one evening in Birmingham. I was sitting in an old pub listening to a local musician and when he was done, I borrowed his mandolin and sang this while he packed up his other equipment. Shortly afterwards a woman approached me to ask what the song was called. I told her and she explained she loved the song but hadn't heard it since the day Luke Kelly passed and she never got the name of it. She had forgotten about it until she heard me singing it. Three years later, I hope she still listens to it.

    • @maxford8175
      @maxford8175 Před rokem +2

@@ripcord5173 So I've been led to believe that the song is related to the English folk ballad "The Grey Cock/The Lovers Ghost". However, there are multiple sources that claim it is a Scottish ballad, which Luke Kelly claimed himself. However, these folk songs are changed and altered throughout time, especially with travelling people exchanging songs across continents. It's the same as the famous "Wild Rover", which is celebrated as Irish but can be viewed as originating from a 17th century British 'alehouse' broadside ballad. So I might be wrong, and please correct me if I am. Folk songs are too hard to trace with every country having its own version. One thing I will note, you cannot beat the mastery of the Irish when it comes to performing these ballads. Although English people have contributed to the history of many folk songs, they don't seem to capture the same emotion in performing them as the Scots or Irish. (IMO)

Just listened to several covers of this wonderful song. There were many fine efforts but this has to be the definitive rendition. Luke's voice is unique and lends itself perfectly to this classic.
