The ship lost main electrical power a few minutes before the impact, got power back and was attempting to stop but lost power briefly again but regained it shortly before the actual impact with the bridge pylon. When a ship loses electrical power like this it loses the ability to control its engine and unless they are very quick to go manual on the steering they lose the ability to steer the ship. With two pilots aboard it is unlikely this was anything but a serious and very unfortunate accident. As for the bridge itself, it is a truss structure where each section depends on the next to remain in position, knock one out and the rest will simply collapse.
If the ship lost ability to navigate, that’s the absolute worst case scenario. This happens all the time out to sea, but pulling into port, you’re supposed to go through checks to ensure your equipment is ready to pull in. I’m sure they did that because they stated there was indeed a pilot onboard, but losing ability to navigate in the middle of the night is a nightmare scenario.
Yup. Once you lose power, you have no control of rudder or thrusters. I feel as bad for the pilots and crew as I do the poor folks who perished. This was an absolute tragedy for everyone involved.
They blacked out and momentarily lost propulsion. It looks like they got the main engine back in use fairly quickly but they decided to go astern and dropped an anchor. It might have better for them to put the engine ahead to maintain steerage. They were in the middle of the channel too. Going astern caused them to go off track.

There is an excellent video about this on the "What is going on with shipping?" channel here on YT. It's so clear you can see vehicles crossing the bridge, although at a distance.
The scary thing is this bridge is not the only vulnerable and structurally questionable one in the USA. There have been plenty of reports from states across our country that have expressed significant concern about the aging infrastructure, and predictability of major bridge collapses. Unfortunately, this was predictable - and it’s possible more are on the horizon.
For the Bridge Span and a chance of a collision the structure should have had MORE THAN 2 SETS OF PILINGS--BAD ENGINEERING & INSPECTION. The bridge was so heavy it just flipped up because only 1 piling left could not give it any balance
@@edd06001 that's like saying large trucks shouldn't be allowed on roads as they can crush small cars, buildings, etc. Should restaurants next to roads have gigantic concrete barriers in case a truck runs into them?

Modern ships have 1 big engine, instead of 2-4 engines, for better fuel efficiency. If that 1 engine stops turning the propellor, then navigation is lost.
Unfortunately, disappears to be the case of a mechanical/electrical failure onboard the ship, causing a total loss of navigational control. Is awful as it is, equipment malfunctions and devices fail.

POSSIBLE ENGINEERING FAILURES & PROBLEMS !!!! Large ships with only one Screw ! Not clever in confined waterways, when the ships power appears to have been lost. One Screw instead of multiple ones, means less ability to guide the ship. The ship should have been under the control of a local Pilot with intimate knowledge of this waterway, so he's the guy to question first !!! Secondly it is clear that this large Container ship physically hit one of the major support columns, indicating there was insufficient protection around the columns base, to keep ships physically away, to prevent such disasters. A virtually identical incident occurred to a major bridge on the highway to Key West (Florida), which was brought down 30-40 years ago ! That incident resulted in a very large increase in the diameter of the protection around that bridges supports, to prevent large ships from physically reaching the actual bridge supports. Of course this type of "N" Girder bridge is maybe not wise today ! Because as clearly seen this method of construction shows that each major "N" Girder section is reliant on the integrity of ALL the other sections. Hence when one section collapses you have a domino effect that brings all the other "N" Girder sections down with it. Note the "flat" or level under girder sections of roadway at each end of the bridge were unaffected, and so remained standing, because they are NOT connected to the main central "N" Girder structures !!! I'm a Senior Mechanical Railway Engineer, and "N" Girder type construction is typical in Railway Bridge construction in the past. But my brief summation of this incident is of course limited to a 7.00 minute piece of Web Cam film that caught the ships approach, and importantly the visible electrical failures on that ship. Which most likely contributed to the inability of the ship to avoid hitting the bridge, due to uncontrollable drifting. But only a thorough investigation by qualified authorities will be able to assess the full situation, and future remedial safety protections to prevent such a re-occurrence !
Well done to Joe for allowing Tom to speak fully & not constantly interrupting as the highly irritating female presenter did earlier this morning...🤔👍🤨
That ship showed that this bridge is a weak design! Hitting that one pillar made all the other parts of the bridge fall like dominos! Should never build a popsicle bridge like that!

The good news is the ship's owners won't feel a thing. This won't slow them down one bit thanks to insurance.
What a waste of words from you. There’s a very wise say that tell us to say nothing if we don’t have a good thing to say.
The Harbor Pilot actually outranks the Captain of the vessel, before open waters, so The Port of Baltimore will need insurance, as well.
