When it comes to questions I think the use is: She asked, "do you love me?" instead of: She said, "do you love me?". It personally makes more sense to me to use "said" when a statement is emitted and "asked" when it's a question instead of a statement.

'She said' makes more sense as that sentence is in a direct speech...n in a direct speech, one has to just quote whatever being said by someone else as it is... correct me if m wrong...😊
