5 Whiskeys You SHOULDN'T Buy!

- So something we are asked a lot is if people should be a bottle of whiskey they saw at a store. A lot of whiskey's have become "over valued" whether it's by a store owner, secondary, or allocations. There are a handful of reasons we don't buy a whiskey, value is a big one. Another reason is a lack of transparency or bogus stories.
This all being said, we buy whiskey to make content. So in theory, we bought these whiskey's so you don't have to.
For people who complain they can't see what we put up there or listened to what we said.
1) Cleveland
2) Basil Hayden 10 yr
3) Jefferson's Ocean
4) Woodford Reserve Master's Collection
5) Booker's

1:00 Cleveland 1 month....
2:27 Basil Hayden's(overpriced, not great)
3:45 Jefferson's ocean(overpriced, not bad)
5:42 Woodford Reserve masters collection(overpriced, inconsistent quality)
8:25 Booker's(overpriced).
Basically gimmicky, money making, experimental "whiskey"
Answered my question.
ty...8 mins I would not get back!
Thanks Thomas. I appreciate it.
Thanks!! saved me time
lil book is arguably worse than bookers in my opinion
If you close your eyes...its just David Schwimmer and Steve Buscemi complaining about over priced whiskey.
Or Beavis and Butthead
TP for my bungholio
@@BourbonJunkies lol. Bunghole. Funny and ironic.
If you open your eyes it’s David Schwimmer and Steve Buscemi complaining
I have never heard a better voice comparison in my entire life . . . Well done!
Another plea for:
1) Close-ups of the bottles as they’re being discussed
2) Slower & more precisely enunciated delivery *without cross-talk*
3) Graphic showing the bottles reviewed at the end
If you watch the next video we did (best values in whiskey) we did all of those I believe! This video isn't new anymore so hopefully you'll see the constructive criticism helped! Cheers!
@@BourbonJunkies : +1 on needing some bottle close ups. However I am cool with cross talk. Adds flavor to the conversation. Looking forward to more videos
I didn’t catch the names of the 1st, 2nd, or 5th. To be fair, I’ve been drinking...
Thanks man. Watch the next one there are close ups and names on screen! Cheers!
😂🤣 this is a great comment!
I am happy with Evan Williams'. I once read a review of it, which was "Cheap, and doesn't taste awful." Good enough for me! I have a laugh every time I pour it. "Cheap and doesn't taste awful". So why not.
Evan Williams Single Barrel is delicious 🥃👍🏻
Evan Williams is better than it has any right to be, especially at the price point. Truth be told, I've enjoyed everything from Heaven Hill so far.
Yup, it's what I buy and actually enjoy. Best is when you find it on sale. Sadly I basically no longer drink so my current bottle is about 2 years old.
Evan Williams is an amazing bournon, way better considering the price
Evan Williams green label was my dad's favorite for years. He was too cheap to buy Jack Daniels. And he mixed it with Pepsi...so there's that... 😁
Bourbon and tequila are now like wine in that it is all story, marketing, and influencers. Need a solid price point list.
Boozapp is a really helpful app I use
Old Forester is an undervalued bourbon.
OF 1920 is about as good a mid level bourbon as you can find.
Asked my wife if she'd like some Old Forester. She said she'd prefer a young one. Bada boom! 😂
Shhhhhh...the less people know, the lower the price is. I have been drinking old forrester since I was in highschool.
Old Forester is over $50 in Australia.
Shhhhhhh It's becoming hard to find in Denver
Any chance y’all can flash the name of the bourbon on the screen when you present the bottle? It’s a selfish request I know, but I was watching on my phone and couldn’t read the labels. And the inside of a crane is kind of loud. 🤷🏻♂️
Agreed. Watching these on my phone and cant see the specific labels...either call them out by name or flash it in the screen. Please!
@@timahaus I mean we say the names of the lines which is what we are referencing BUT in case in which we specify the actual bottle most videos have the bottle names on screen! Definitely will keep this in mind when editing these videos in the future!
Yeah y’all need to show names if you’re gonna make a list lol
Yeah disappointing.
Agreed.
Now, lets list 5 under $30. thats the best bang for the buck.
Buffalo trace, Evan williams. Eagle rare (if you can find one) , lacerny, Henry McKenna (found it at my liquor store for $29)
Elijah Craig Small Batch. I really wish it was still certified 12 year old, but for the money it remains one of the best bourbons available.
Give me Buffalo Trace all day long. $24 a bottle!
@@johngillard3 had a bottle once tasted and smelled like ass. Never going back. Used too like alot too
Elijah Craig is my second choice bourbon after Larceny.
@@jimbintz2424 completely agree with this statement
This is what happens when an industry figures out that people will run out and buy anything and everything that they put out,.. just as long as they put a high enough price tag on it.
Once again, obsessive collectors with deep pockets ruin a good old fashioned hobby for everyone else.
If history is any measure, that worm is about to turn. Bourbon has a 15-year cycle. We are at the peak of this cycle. Let's see what happens next!
Roll your own!!!
Just like C&R guns... 😥
Awesome content! Don't be afraid to put it out there. You guys back up each pick with informed and realistic explanations. Keep it up, looking forward to more videos. We need more of this.
I work in a liquor store selling booze all day, and I agree with everything. People spend so much time chasing unicorn bottles (Customers assume that since we are a huge store that we must have the unobtianium bourbon) that they ignore the good stuff right on the shelf.
reverse snobbery. be an educator not a finger pointer
@@chriscox8515 I try, believe me.
Wise man.
All the new boutique bourbon is made with MGP base bourbon (out of Indiana), they just add a little something to it to make it different. It takes years for real bourbon makers to create blends as their base. How do people think these never before heard of bourbons just appear?
This is why I love to pop in to small stores to see what they have. Little hole in the wall stores have some impressive bottles for either obscene or too good to be true prices.
@@chriscox8515 you can try to educate til you're blue in the face. If the customer doesn't want to be educated, they won't be. They have a friend that knows better, a spouse that knows better or THEY know better!
Im a bar manager in the heart of Downtown Louisville, KY. We don't carry Bookers for all the above reasons you stated & more!
Jefferson's Reserve Voyage 14 and 19 is some of the best stuff I've ever had. I actually enjoy everything off their line. To discriminate a whiskey based off value isn't fair when it's quality. 14 in my own personal opinion is the best I've had other than for WLW.
Plus they have to understand... Price is based off of availability and market demand, and not quality. Ocean line is probably my favorite bourbon. I'm a scotch guy so realistically 80 is like average what I spend 🤷♂️
People will pay "a lot" for their favorite. However, the whiskey is NOT RARE, so obviously the price-point isn't a supply-versus-demand situation. It's high-cost because....the people who make it are dead-greedy, and are taking-advantage of the boom.
The way I took what they said was, "there are other Bourbons that are just as good OR better for $20-$40 less... buy those." They even pointed out that you could buy two bottles of a better tasting pour for the price of the one bottle... And if you like to drink Bourbon wouldn't it make sense to get More pours of something that is better tasting?
@@johnwright6311 They didn’t mention WHAT is better for so much less. I am relatively new to bourbon, but so far I’ve had : New Riff Bottled in Bond, Four Roses original, Small Batch, and Small Batch Select, Wild Turkey 101 and Rare Breed, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Larceny, Old Forester 86 proof, and Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 28. Thus far, the Jefferson’s Ocean is BY FAR my favorite. Blew me away. So smooth, so delicious, very unique flavor profile. Good mouthfeel and didn’t feel watered down at all at that 90 proof. Drank like a higher proof than it is (100-ish?). I sure wish I could find something similar for less. So if you know WHICH those are, that’d be great to know!
These two are too young to know but at one time Booker's was priced in the upper $30 dollar range, always much closer to 8 years old and often a bit over and it was the best bourbon on the market by far. Granted, this was 20+ years ago, but it was once an enormous whiskey that had no peer!
Judging from how the Japanese whiskies having gone through the roof in prices, I figure American Bourbons might follow suit. So, I bought mine (4 bottles) at $40 and up to $46 about 4 or 5 years ago. I knew their price would go up, because a) it is very good, b) the packaging looks cool, c) it's cask strength. I just did think it was going to go up so much so fast. If they started to limit their production, it could go even higher. Human psychology 101. Wait until the Chinese and the Japanese consumers catch on to this fad.
Bought bookers from 2017 in 2019 for 49.99, was sitting in shelf, now 2021 bottle at 79.99 i passed lol
Plenty of good bourbon under $40 a bottle.
So damn true! Cheers!
I'm now halfway through my first bottle of bourbon ever, Bulleit Bourbon. It's 90 proof and I'm really enjoying it. What should I try next?
@@danielfreeman649 The other half of the bottle.
@@JSMHP Seems to have a decent rye content at 27%. For the 100 proof and price I'll give it a try. Thanks
@@danielfreeman649 1792 Small Batch $28
Wild Turkey $23

If you're broke Very Old Barton's 100 or 90 proof for about $15
Good luck and welcome to the club
I picked up a few bottles of Booker’s just before they announced the upcoming price increase. It was originally going to jump from $60 straight to $100, so I panicked a little. They ended up only increasing it $10-$15 or so. Glad I still have a $60 one
Good assessment, even though I like Woodford, but not at that price.
I think a regular bottle of Woodford is still a good value but those they were talking about must be crap haha
@@LuckyCJ Woodford is my ‘go to’
Straight up 👍
My corner store sells regular basil for 35. It was my first and I have no regrets.
It is a nice bourbon. Still is. But for less, you can a a buffalo trace which is amazing. Or Evan Williams
I love Basil Hayden. Really great with Coca-Cola too
@@kingsecho3351 having that now. Just got the BH and it’s good. Favorite so far. I got a store pick Buffalo trace and a normal one also.
I gotta say I really like the standard line of Woodford Reserve. Pretty smooth for a $30 bourbon.
My Brother-in-law bought the Woodford and it was not my favorite Woodford. I much prefer the Double Oak.
@@UsedBrain4U double oak is ridiculously good.
@@UsedBrain4U agree!
double oak my go-to for every day, gifts, etc...best value out there imo
Have you tried their single malt/pure malt? It's also, very tasty.
Woodford reserve is good with mixing coke as well.
Love this. I wish more people were talking about inflated value in bourbon/rye. We currently have access to some pretty amazing hooch, but there's a lot of overpriced garbage and marketing shenanigans out there. I'd submit Hudson's and everything Whistle Pig has ever put out. Hudson's = trick whiskey that tastes like horse spit. Whistle Pig = Dressed up Canadian Rye that charges you crazy money for the dress.
Yeah, up until now. Whistlepig came out with their first 100% in-house bourbon and rye this summer. I’m sure it’s overpriced but no word on how good it is yet.
I've never liked anything I got from Whistle Pig. I *know* VT can do better! There's no reason any of it should cost what it does. Knock $20 off every bottle and we'll talk.
I like one WhistlePig. The 12 year cask aged. I think it is really good. But the price is crazy and it keeps going up. $120 the last time I checked.
The most important rule of bourbon. Don't let anyone tell you what bourbon to drink or how to drink it. What these guys hate, you may love.
Absolutely agree
Best comment here! Thanks.
This is the best comment I've ever seen on a Bourbon, Wine, or Beer channel.
Two of my preferable easy drinking whiskeys right now are around $22/bottle... and some say it's not good cause the price alone.
These are all meme pours fr tho
I grew up 20 miles from Maker's Mark. It tastes the best to me.
I had a part time job there in the late 70's turning the barrels in the warehouses. Rotate them one quarter of a turn. By the time you've done them all, you start all over again.
I'm totally sure Makers Mark available here in EU is not the same you have access to since all the good reviews from USA consumers. Here it costs ~30$ and tastes like acetone mixed with tar.
Please show readable close ups of the labels. Your background has definitely improved.
Glenfiddich is MY slow drinking choice. A 12 year old Old Highland 750ml bottle is 63$ Canadian in my local liquor store.
Very nice! The green bottle. Always a staple to have.
Glenfiddich is a Speyside not Highland scotch. Still great choice tho.
Why is everything so expensive in canada ?
Thought we were talking bourbon here, not scotch. Perhaps I misunderstood.
@@sebastianshaw210 Glenfiddich 12 year is anywhere from $20 to 35 in America. I think it's $30 at COSTCO.
I'll stick with Bullet Bourbon, Tullamore Dew, and Jameson's Caskmates, thank you very much.
Tullamore Dew 100%
Agreed on the Tullamore.
Tullamore Dew is one of my favorites
Tullamore Dew!
I mean, I was born and raised in the working class Midwest, where whiskey went in your 7-Up by default, so I grew up exposed to Canadian Club and Rich & Rare and Seagram’s 7. Tullamore was one of the first I had that I was happy to drink neat.
Maybe put a closeup of each bottle you’re talking about so schmucks like me on a phone don’t have to back it up?
The first Booker's that I ever bought was in California and was in sale for 45 dollars. It was okay at that price. You guys hit it on the head with that one. Haven't had the others
I got my buddy a bottle of Booker's when he had his first kid. He killed it in one night. Like 75 bucks down the drain.
I think Booker's more than 10 years ago got me into whiskey
First time here...subscribed. I have to say, I agreed with every one of the bottles you put up "for the reasons". I used to be a huge Bookers fan, but not paying over $80 for the regular stuff and having a REAL hard time considering the Little Book release 4 this year (even though I have one of each year put away) since it's rumored to be $140. Nuts. One you totally missed...Rogue Spirits Dead Guy Whiskey. The cool pewter top is basically what you get for your $50...dump the whiskey. If you haven't tried it...DON'T. :-)
Honestly, I've never understood the value of Pappy Van Winkle. I got a bottle of it a long time ago for $80, and it is really awesome, probably the best I've had...but I wouldn't spend thousands on that bottle like most people seem to nowadays.
It's all a gimmick. Great whiskey but not for the price. You can get the same experience from Wild turkey Rare breed for a fraction of the cost.
It is good but it's just over hyped. For the price of one bottle you can have several really great bourbons. I had a bottle of 23 year and I hated it. The smoke was overpowering. We were doing a taste test with several different bourbon shots lined up and you could smell the smoke coming off the shot. The lesser aged Pappy, didn't have this and was delicious. I know it's all about personal taste but I think for the money Woodford Double Oaked is a great value. If you like Rye, but enjoy the softness of a bourbon I highly recommend WhistlePig 12 year Cask aged. Aged in wine barrels. Very smooth. I will shell out $120 a bottle for that over a outrageous bottle of Pappy.
@@Ace2Trill WTRB is an excellent choice. My problem is when I drink it, I can't feel my feet. 😆
Great job guys! Really enjoyed the list and agree with you on most, but having only tried one Master's Collection (this year's 2021 Batch A), I actually loved it! It comes in a 128.3 , their highest yet (not to mention the new bottle is a beaut, Clark), and it's outstanding IMHO. That said, if you're going on consistency over time it's hard to argue with ya (although I'm now worried about opening my only other bottle of WR Master's Collection you love so much (the chocolate malted rye) 😄
If you missed one I'd have to say it's the Willette Pot Still. Cool bottle, but drain pour. Love what Willette does overall, great stuff, but that's not one of them. Anyway, great job and Cheers! ~Andy
I own a liquor store, distributors are GIVING away basil haydens garbage Canadian blends.
Big props to the old forester, I recommend that to people all the time that dont want to spend more than 25 bucks. The 1920 prohibition is probably my go to.
For bottles you may have missed. Imo obviously pappy, maybe blantons. I know alot of people shit on ecbp, I actually like it. But then again I buy stuff at cost lol
moe perry I guess there are props to owning a liquor store very similar to manning the grill. You taste the best stuff and get more of it before everybody else does. 🍻
@@alexmidence274 the best part is, I'm in wa state, where the liquor taxes are so high cost is about half. So I can get stuff pretty cheap! Being totally honest though, I get the pappy line once a year around nov-xmas.
23, 20, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8 and William larue, some other stuff, I haven't once taken one for myself. I only have a few guys in my area that are even interested in the rare BT collection, and usually sell them at msrp (taxes are so high, high shelf prices mean more taxes)
I have my favorites, and am content with those. 1920 is one of them. I like Joseph magnus, little book, even some knob creek, makers 46.
Generally agree with the the inclusion of Basil Hayden, but I thoroughly enjoyed the rye finished in rum casks.
I love regular Basil. I don't get the hate. Also, I hate how they don't do a great job at the "buy this instead". Basil is way more of a fruity taste and Knob Creek is more of a spice and chocolate taste. They're nothing alike. If someone likes Basil, why not push them towards a different bourbon with fruity tasting notes??
The hate is bc it isn’t finished in rum casks, it’s mixed with rum. Very different, If it were finished in rum casks then I could at least understand a little bit more the price they charge, but when you are literally just mixing rum in, then proofing down to 80, bottling that and selling it at the same price as things like Rare Breed Barrel proof, it’s really hard to justify the gouging that’s happening to my wallet. If you like the rye finished in rum or wine casks, just go buy a decent rye and mix in a bit of rum or wine and let it sit for a couple weeks in the bottle, viola. Basil Hayden’s dark rye and rum cask finished all for half the price
@@hallzl1 its because its expensive for what you get. The knob creek comparison is because they are both jim beam small batch collection products. Also a lot of people dont like that they arent finished they are whiskeys mixed with other liquor.theres definitely a reason it gets shat on but if you like it you like it. Just enjoy
The deal with having the barrels on the ship so more of the whiskey inside is coming into contact with the barrel seen so very short sited. Just create a process that slowly rotates the barrels. It would no doubt be less expensive then putting them on a ship.
@@swct_1963 keyword: almost
Keep spinning it and the ice cube will eventually match the same rpm of the glass.
I tried this and gave it to a friend who liked it whiskey had a salty taste to.me
@Beyond Your IQ of course not. It's not Rum.
@@swct_1963 Correct!. Falling film phenomena. A paint shaker type of equipment (at slower speeds than the hardware store) would create a more turbulent mixing and interface with the charred barrel surface. Lots of cooling processes in manufacturing use sprayers, not quenching. This creates more turbulence, fresh cooling medium at the surface.
@Beyond Your IQ touche.
I tried a lot of whiskey trying to find "the one" and once I was honest with myself and what I liked it turns out Wild Turkey 101 is my favorite. I get 750s for around $20. There may be better, more tasteful choices, but I finish every glass of this stuff no matter what.
Love WT 101. Get it here in Navarre Florida for $35 a handle. 😁
Without a doubt
Try Jameson black label.
Wild Turkey 101 is my favorite. Tried all kinds, always come back to it.
It's almost like most of this stuff is subjective. Enjoy what you enjoy and don't worry about price or prestige.
Using charred oak inside a container to “condition” the distillate isn’t a new thing. The practice goes back to prohibition and probably further. No one would risk having a warehouse full of barrels of whiskey so they would put in vats with the charred oak and seal it up for a month or two. It wasn’t good but it was better than the the clear stuff and they could charge more for “whiskey” a lot of home distillers do this also because many don’t have anywhere to store barrels and just like then in many states it isn’t exactly legal to do.
Basil Hayden's bourbon for 32$bat Costco is a solid deal in my opinion. It's a little sweet but not bad at that price point.
When you can get Forester 100 for 24.95 or Elijah Craig Small Batch for 29.95 it is.
I like Basil Hayden's and was surprised to see them here. Its usually around $40 to $45 a bottle around where I live. I really just started drinking bourbon (this and Angels Envy all I have really had...like both) and realize there is just a lot out there to try.
@@bram2437 your correct as far as I’m concerned but I’m new too

i have 3 go to's. Blanton's, Buffalo Trace & Bulleit. Just went through a bottle of Knob Creek 10 yr. Good stuff.

That bottle of Old Forrester runs me 17.99 at my Trader Joe’s, less a discount cause I also work there. It is a wonderful bottle. We also sell BH on occasion, and I never buy it. Nuff said.
Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 28 is so far THE BEST bourbon I’ve had. I’d love to know which bourbons you say are better for half or less the price! (With a similar flavor profile). I am relatively new to bourbon, but so far I’ve had : New Riff Bottled in Bond, Four Roses original, Small Batch, and Small Batch Select, Wild Turkey 101 and Rare Breed, Elijah Craig Small Batch, Larceny, Old Forester 86 proof, Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, and Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 28 (but I’ve heard the voyages are inconsistent so this could be totally different than the one you guys had). And thus far, the Jefferson’s Ocean is BY FAR my favorite. I’m in Michigan, too, btw! 😃
As you fellas mentioned, some of the bottles are pricey based on a story. Some are priced high hoping the maker can dupe us. In the case of Pappy’s and several others, it’s due to the small batch & the bottle itself. I’ve heard empty bottles of Pappy’s sell for a pretty penny. The highest priced whiskey I am willing to buy is Michters Bourbon, but it’s also my favorite and currently priced at $45-$50. That said, I do like Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek & Knob Creek Maple, and all can be had for $30-$40. Nothing worse than dropping your hard earned money and finding you’ve been had. Larceny is one such example. My buddy let me try his and I teased the bottle was aptly named as he was robbed. I almost picked up a bottle at Costco earlier that day but was so glad I didn’t after trying his that evening.
Well done. no real complaints there, although, I do like some Bookers, my situation is different. At one point, I received near 20 samples of different Bookers, tested them against each other, to determine the one I preferred. And then, I bought that one. No chance am I buying every new one they come out with, and definitely not for 100 bucks.
It is sooooo hard to follow what GD bourbon you are talking about. Either slow the f down, list the names in the description, or put them on the screen. Basil Haden WHAT. Woodford master collection but what one! Frustrating.

I live in MD. A couple of years ago while visiting my folks in TX, I bought a bottle of Pikesville down there and only for the name. Turns out, it is a very good bourbon for less than $40 bucks.
I'm glad I'm too poor to get disappointed by most of this whiskey
Try Canadian Club 12 year reserve..if it's actually 12 years is debatable but for $30 CDN it'll give most rye whiskeys a run for their money
I have never dumped a bottle of bourbon before. Might not have liked some, but figure I should finish it and see what time and air might improve for final evaluation.. The one exception is that Spirits of the Apocalypse. Horrid stuff. Gave it a 2 glass try and then down the sink.
The value of good whiskey is a less severe hangover.
Exactly why I switched to mostly scotch😅
Just stay drunk.
@@joemendiola7345 If you just want to stay drunk, drink beer. Whiskey will take a toll on your health a lot faster than staying drunk on beer.

But in an effort to save time, because I'm going shopping this week to stock up my new home bar, give your opinion on Basil Hayden and your #1 pick for under $50.
Under 50 go 1792 small batch, and basil haydens is a terrible value. Cheers dude! Thanks for being here!
@@BourbonJunkies I have a 200 bottle collection (mostly bourbon, some rye and a bit of scotch) and I really like the 1792 line; however, I think the best "every day" bourbon is Evan Williams Black Label. I can buy 1.75 liter bottles for $17.99 and it tastes better than 85 to 90% of the bourbons out there. I use it as my "control" when comparing bourbons and their prices. There certainly ARE better whiskies, but there isn't a better value (with such a great taste). Additionally, I'd just like to say, thanks for your opinions. Of the videos I've seen, you guys have been spot-on and VERY entertaining. SUBSCRIBED!!! :) :)

Yeah. Me too. At least I’m Ohio it’s $30, not $50. So...I do like the Black Cherry Wood finish though.
I'm so glad you mentioned Booker's because I thought Granny's Batch tasted like a $90 Evan BiB
One of the best bourbons at a great value: Eagle Rare from Buffalo Trace.
I am a big fan of the entire Buffalo Trace line.
We go way out of our way to find Eagle Rare at reasonable prices and nab as many as we can when we do - we haven't found better for the price.
Stop telling people about Eagle Rare. It's getting too hard to find.
Eagle Rare
I couldn't find it until I joined a bourbon club affiliated with a liquor store chain. I did it begrudgingly as I'm not the club joining type, but I haven't regretted it. Apparently they don't even put some of their rarer bottles on the shelf, but make them exclusively available to club members.

I was about to say the same thing! I was in the store today contemplating about getting a few of these and instead just figured I'll finish my Evan Williams Bottled In Bond first. Now I won't be getting any of those and get something else next time.
@@locdasmoke EW BIB 👍
Again, spot on about Booker's. It's aesthetically fine, and as a working class guy I felt a neat way to treat myself on special occasions, celebrating good times, etc. Strong and tasty. But I'm never buying it again probably, and they show no responsibility to their fans with their pricing.
Good video. 1st one I’ve watched of you cats. I would replace Bookers (which I love and actually consider to be a good value, as I get at Costco for about $60 in Norcal) with Jack Daniels Single Barrel. Seems like that used to go for $60+. Came in a fancy box I think. I got a couple as gifts, so I was spared the high cost, but I noted at the time it seemed severely overpriced.
Cheers.
I tried ONE bottle of Booker’s. I tried to drink it neat and felt like it might burn a hold in my esophagus. With a splash or rocks, it was drinkable, but not nearly good enough to justify the price.
neat is the only way to go for me
@@wappiercer7306
...and maybe a drop or two of good water to open it up a bit, but neat is the way I enjoy my good bourbons. For mixed drinks, a $15 and under bottle is used, it is sacrilege to use a good bourbon with a mixer.
Which reminds me of a story about Damon Stoudamire, ex Portland Trailblazer NBA player, that I heard from a well informed source. He was at an away game, and a group of his friends and hangers-on came to his house to party. I can't remember if Damon's dad was there at the time, or not. But when Damon got home, he found an empty bottle of his Louis XIII cognac on the table, some glasses, and a bunch of empty Coke cans! Mind you, that a 750mL bottle of that was around $3,000. Criminal!!!
Big time agree with this video, gents. I do like Booker’s but I think the price is crazy! With Knobs being so good, there is no reason to go after Booker’s anymore
Blanton's and Basil Hayden were my starter bourbons (migrating from Scotch). That said, this was back when Blanton's was $50 and readily available (and most likely aged longer than it is these days), and I was only paying $25 at my Class Six for Basil. At that price ($25) I still don't hate Basil, but it's relatively bland. I equate it to being a beer enthusiast (which I am) and enjoying a nice pilsner now and then as a break from IPAs or porters. That said, I haven't consumed a real pour of Basil in 9 months and my bottle is collecting dust.
I also used to like Booker's at $65. At $90 I won't touch it when I can easily get ECBP or Jack SB BP, both of which are better and cheaper.
I paid twice as much for a bottle of Basil's and I agree it is a rather bland bourbon for the price, nothing special imho. Sipping on some Bulleit Bourbon at the moment and I'm loving it far more than Basil's, half the price and twice the complexity.
Buffalo Trace by a wide margin is the best value. It tastes just like my favorite, Woodford Reserve.
"we're not huge booger fans" yeah me too
Absolutely agree. The creeping prices on lots of bourbons like Booker's is awful. My son brought home a Jefferson's Ocean to celebrate his promotion at work. Huge disappointment for the price. Many better options for under $50.
Honestly I prefer the taste of the standard Jefferson's over the Aged at Sea. Willett is probably the best value compared to this other shit.
Hi guys, many people don’t realize the importance of value. I like Jefferson’s Ocean, but it’s not worth the $$ they charge for it. It is greatly lacking in value. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Cheers buddy!
@@BourbonJunkies I personally love the cask strength Ocean, so what would you recommend in comparable taste at a better value?
Thxs for listing it, wasn't sure which basil you were talking about it.
Ha, your thumb nail image totally caught me. What the hell is wrong with Dovetail?!?!?
JEBAITED
Thought the same thing, was gonna come at them if they hated on dovetail, love that bottle 😂
You had me try the Cleveland and I still have flashbacks of it.
And chocolate malted rye was one of the worst I’ve ever tasted.
The way Cleveland makes it seems like the exact same way NC's Defiant makes theirs. You can taste the metallic notes! 🤮
I had a double of Bookers at a bar last week. Asked the Bartender about it and he said they just got it in. When ordering he said there would be an additional charge of $2 over the well drink price. The best $2 I ever spent!
Dumbass bartender
Bought a bottle of Peerless Rye…on sale for $90. Wowzers…what a deal down from $99.
Saw the cool bottle, figured the price has to justify the quality right?
Nope!
“Science isn’t real.” Daniel Shook circa 2020 after a 9 day binge on EHT Barrel Proof. Also Jeptha Creed, you’re welcome.
I really like Jeffersons Ocean Cask Strength, its just so overpriced, as for where it comes from my understanding is that Bardstown Bourbon Company does all the contract distilling for Jeffersons now. Also fuck the entire Basil Haydens line.
I agree, I think Oceans is very good, but will maybe only buy one bottle a year because it is not worth all of the money.
Old Grandad 114
David Nicholson Special Reserve
Eagle Rare
Weller Antique 107
Old Forester 86
Buffalo Trace
Ridgemont 1792
Blanton's
Knob Creek
Heaven Hill green label
E.H. Taylor
Four Roses Single Barrel
All fantastic bourbons at different price points. Some are very affordable, but I'm also in Louisville KY, so I save some coin because local.
OF 86, my go to.
I built and helped install two controll panels for Cleveland Whiskey. Interesting concept, nice people.
I was wondering when Templeton would make the list...
Nobody should buy Templeton. Fuck those guys! Fraudsters!
What's the story on Templeton rye?
Tl;Dr they were selling "their distillate" when they didn't even have a still in their building.
@@BourbonJunkies oh that's eff'd.
Absolutely agree. As much as I love Booker's, for the price I'd rather drink Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Rare Breed, or Jack cask strength (which I personally think is quite underrated). Booker's 25th anniversary was damn delicious though.
My favorite is my uncle Zacks, hidden holler 30. Goes for $100 a gallon @ 180 +/- proof. Family recipe for 200 years
Effete pseudo alky snobs
Tho I agree with this list, keep in mind that the best whiskey is your favorite whiskey
I’m started to get sick of weller pricing and brand saturation
Dan was 2 years ago when we didn't have a channel. Now it seems worse than ever with no signs of getting better.
Wow... I 100% agree with absolutely every one of these. This is nearly identical to my personal list of “whiskeys I will not buy”. If you’re ever in the Lansing area, I’ll get you some stellar pours.
Picked up a bottle of Walking Stick...Buffalo Trace line..I like it. Would like to hear what these two think, and I don't know why.
The worst whiskey I've ever had by far though is one I've only ever seen one time. It was clear, and it had a label that said it was aged 5 seconds as a joke to basically say that they didn't age it. It was, believe it or not, Pabst Blue Ribbon whiskey. I actually ended up throwing it out after trying to choke it down for a few tries. Coke couldn't even mask the horribleness.
That shit was soooo terrible!!
I thought it was called "Coaches Jock Strap". Or maybe that's just what it was filtered through.
Yea it's PBR whiskey. The nose is like someone cleaned a popcorn machine with cheap vodka... and that's about the taste of it too!
I know I’ve bought that many bottles in the last 8 years but they have all been drunk. If I was a collector and not a drinker I’d sure have a nice selection like yours. I may need to AA meetings after thinking about this one.
You might be an alcoholic but a along as you’re functioning it’s nobody’s business
I'm the exact opposite these days. Tons of various types of booze -- enough to stock a bar -- and I just never get around to drinking any of it. Even my doctor's been telling me I should have a drink now and then. Hell, years ago they were all telling me NOT to drink! I should start up again, though. I've got too much blood in my alcohol system these days.
Difficult to get the names of most of the brands you mention - disappointing. You could list them somewhere, maybe go back and make this video again.
They updated the video description with the list of bottles to avoid.
Totally agree with all of these and I watched the video thinking I would disagree with you guys! Great options across the board! Keep up the good videos! 🥃
I just bought a bottle of Miller
Highlife for two dollars. I feel like it wasn’t overpriced and I was quite satisfied.
Was that a 40 oz.?
Completely different topic but ok
Man seeing Barrell and Whistlepig in the thumbnail gave me whiplash
I was going to form a protest if Whistlepig was on this list.
It’s called clickbait
Buffalo Trace is a fantastic buy. Also love Elijah Craig and Russel's Reserve.
18 year Elijah Craig...was delicious.
Love that EC
Michters is bomb as well.
I live in Ohio, and when Cleveland Whiskey came out I was pretty pumped for it. Once I had it I was very disappointed. However some of their sub-label 'Cleveland Underground' variants are pretty good. Basically if you are looking for a straight bourbon, stay away, but if you are looking for something unique, give the Underground flavors a try.
Especially the black cherry...very good.
Yeah, not buying it. Got a bottle of Cleveland Underground from well meaning non bourbon drinkers. It’s not anything that I’d call bourbon or whiskey. I think more gasoline with burnt wood chips thrown in. It’s obviously selling to northern Ohioans who don’t drink bourbon.
I took a shot of whiskey every time Daniel pulled up his jeans. Did not end well 😮
"Cowboy little barrel American blended whiskey" is the worst whiskey I've ever tried. I've watched people pouring down the sink on the internet. Great video guys!
1792 is great value. Forester Bonded is great value for the proof. My wife is a Woodford woman.
Your wife is awesome! 😆
Got a bottle of Knob Creek 120 single barrel for $40 here in Michigan. Outstanding bourbon at that price point.
I enjoyed Jefferson’s Ocean ( Not my favorite but still enjoyable)but definitely overpriced! I wouldn’t spend the $85ish again for it but it’s been part of my journey into Whiskey which I’m still pretty new to. Should be like a $30-$40 bottle IMO.
I personally have never, and I mean never, had a bottle of 30$ whiskey that was as good or better than Jefferson Ocean. Maybe I'm biased because I really enjoy it, but I don't see it. These guys say they aren't proof snobs, but bring up proof in every video. I want a whiskey that drinks well, 80 proof is going to get me where I want to be without a question.
I mean we love old Forester 86
Titles on the screen would be cool but I'm following you guys. Good stuff you got.
