    Every time I see gesture controls in use I think of Arthur Dent at the radio of the Heart of Gold, vaguely waving his hands about and hoping.

    Controls standards are expected to be the same within maker lines. What standards do you go with? No buttons or stalks at all like a Tesla, or using the paddle shifters in Hyundai/Kia as Regen settings. If one leases or buys a car you quickly learn the variance in controls. Drive all sorts of ICE trucks then get in a Ram and find shifter in an unexpected location/format.

    Thanks for your comment on the sound system. I suspect your test car has the standard sound system, rather than any of the optional upgraded systems. If so, it likely is the same as the standard sound system I had in my I4, and it was a disappointment. On the other hand my iX has the "Convenience Package" which includes the Harmon Kardon Surround Sound system. Vastly better! One other point - My i4 and iX both had./have a data ready USB port. This is a huge plus! So, i could play my favorite tunes from my library on my USB stick. This ALSO has excellent fidelity, and am glad BMW has kept the data ready USB port. Other brands have not.

    Gesture controls are pretty cumbersome and trigger accidentally too often to keep enabled according to a lot of BMW owners. Why didn't they just leave the volume knob and set of physical buttons from the i4? Because they wanted the i5 to gain more haptic controls that you can't locate without looking, and to wave your hands around like an overexuberant stereotype of an Italian driver?

    Having controls in similar configuration is a good idea. The only problem with this idea is that ice cars have controls in different locations depending on auto makers.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 Před 2 měsíci

      Yes but the EV makers could agree to placement of certain common controls.
      The "gas" and brake pedals can be just like in an ICE car but with perhaps some feedback in the force your foot feels to let you know when you are getting into the regen area of the "gas" pedal.
      The steering wheel is a bit obvious but the headlights and turn signals should be easy to get to and on stalks.
      The cruise controls and driver assist need some icons that are really obvious so that you can see them without taking your eyes off the road.

  • @williamclark6466
    @williamclark6466 Před 2 měsíci

    I agree that standardization of controls is very important or helpful, at least. Unfortunately I don't think there's anything we can do to push that forward.

  • @kensmith5694
    @kensmith5694 Před 2 měsíci

    You have a wheel and some pedals. Good software should only need those inputs for driving except perhaps for cruise control.
    More controls mostly just add more ways a driver can have a problem. Your hands need to be on the wheel.
    BTW: 3 second sprint time is the best that physics will allow. Getting close to that is impressive.

    I can see this car has some merits, but what happened with that front grill area? It's like the ICE car would have a chrome grill, and they didn't need that on the electric car, so they just boarded it up. Maybe it has some function, but it just looks like an abandoned area, especially odd as it's highlighted with a lit frame.

    Everyone going straight 6 now for their ICE platforms is great news for BMW which has never stopped making their straight 6. This is most definitely a *"proper"* USA type Sedan as opposed to anything Japan or Korea is currently producing and is much more stout than the Tesla Model S the latter of which is becoming a very much long in tooth. Only quibble is with the low profile tires on this item.

    Great long form review. Still watching it. I used the "Hold" button (which is remembered when leaving and returning) when I first bought our i4. But I found it was terribly difficult to park the large car in our garage. The hold feature makes brake and accelerator application too jerky to park with fine precision. I thought it was core problem with the car, until I turned that button off and I never went back to using it again. I think it's a good feature for someone navigating hilly roads temporarily, but be warned it's a bad feature to leave on when parking near objects.

    Using EDM as reference material and complaining about sound quality? EDM could hardly be considered good quality reference material to evaluate the system's ability to produce the dynamics as well as the nuances of musical instruments as well. From what I saw in the video, the system is a Bowerss&Wilkins system. N&W has always been a high-end quality-oriented brand. I think the system is not the problem but perhaps your taste in and choice of music. try playing some really good acoustic/contemporary jazz as evaluation material.

      We know. Nikki was tongue in cheek joking. But she also listened to some classical.

    • @Graham_Wideman
      @Graham_Wideman Před 2 měsíci

      So you didn't hear Nikki talking about listening to material other than EDM? Your jump to a conclusion that she has a problematic taste in music is rather a stretch based on extrapolating a few brief comments about EDM, considering that she is also a musician trained on a classical instrument.

    BMW i5 M60 0-100kph: 3.7s
    Smart #3 Brabus 0-100kph: 3.7s
    Amazing what 0-100kph acceleration BMW has achieved here, their car is as fast as a Smart car. Truly the ULTIMATE driving machine. This probably was only possible by cutting down the weight by only offering BMW OS 8.5 and not BMW OS 9 which iX1 and iX2 (& X1 & X2) have. Series 5 drivers just don’t deserve OS 9.

      @@kensmith5694 My mistake for mentioning the "P" word! And depends on what you consider a "big" issue. Is issuing a standard that requires regen paddles and that they are located in the same place and operate the same in every EV a ''big' issue? In the US it is not quite the same as electing a President or Senator. Also, organizing a task force to make standards is giving legacy ICE manufacturers a gift to help slow down the EV transition. They can participate and gum things up pretty well. That's a decent size 'issue'.
