We dig deep into the back of the safe to show you some oddball firearms from around the United States. - Zábava
"Hello, I'm looking for a really dumb gun."
MAC "I got you covered bro"
"In my day we called them survivalist"
I called him grandpa
Hey Randy Travis, have a thumbs up.
In my day we say ok zoomer
In the Mid 70's you could get cool stuff.
Guns made by Singer sowing machine, Remington Rand, M1 grands, M1 carbine all for a hundred or so and imports sks, 8 mm Mauser etc.dirt cheap.
I had a 1903 Springfield in 30 03 caliber I paid 25 or 50 bucks for because the neighbor guy selling it couldn't find 30 03 ammo.
Took it out dropped a stripper clip of 30 06 in it and was shooting water filled prestone antifreeze jugs at 800 yards off the flip up iron sight and a rest.
I kinda felt bad about not telling him 30 06 ammo was the same as 30 03 ammo but he was always an abusive dick to us youngsters.
@@edcox8007 I remember being a kid and checking out cheap Moisans, Hellfire trigger devices for AMT Enforcers, and Mitchell's Mausers in the back of gun rags... Then 1994 hit.
Fcukin' Clinton.
Or Buck the 89 year old Blacksmith, that had a pitcher pump at the kitchen sink.
Back in the 80s, I got a 303 Jungle Carbine for $75, a 43’ inland M1 carbine for $185 in a wooden box with a cleaning kit and four 15 round mags and sling with the oiler on the weapon already.
43 foot?
Super high velocity I bet.
Will you give me your M1 carbine for Christmas 🎅 please 🙏
I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. A lot of really cool firearms where available cheap.
I'll never forget Robin Williams talking about how the whole world was going to be flushed down the crapper and he was going to be hanging on the rim.
Well.
He was hanging.
I think that was George Carlin.
I heard that the Bushmaster 'Arm pistol' was intended as a survival/self defence weapon for aircrew and was more designed for point shooting than precise aim, but I could be barking up the wrong tree.
I believe I heard the same.
Oddball the Greatest : "Don't hit me with them negative waves man !"
Moriarity
Jims Pawn in Gun Wilmington NC circa 1988. Polytech Legend $399! Norinco AKS $299!
My first AK..... polytech side folder $315 otd w/3 magazines and 500rds in spam can Chinese steel core. The good old days.
When I was 18(‘87) I went into the Army and it was the first time I had ever handled a firearm. Problem was, as a medic I was told that my interest in firearms and other weapons was “antithetical” to being a medic. This was from my military leadership. When I reenlisted to be an EOD Technician in ‘91, I was called a “traitor” and a “heathen” for daring to leave the medical profession. I didn’t buy my first firearm until almost 10 years later. Now all the cool firearms I could have bought years ago are $$$$$. Wack!
screw them - do want you want. When you look back all those knuckleheads that derided you, where are they now?
That's the year i was born. Thank you for your service
Thankfully that way of thinking is over. I was a combat medic from 07-13 and had both a m9 and m4 the whole time. I probably got more range time than the average 11b since a medic had to be at every range.
The Calico with the rotary mags was very unique. Would like to see some others from that era return with improvements. The Feather AT is another that comes to mind that seems like it would be easy to make again. I would even be thrilled to see a domestically made SKS so long as it could be done at an affordable price.
Such goofy but beautiful firearms. MAC, you have a great collection! I remember paging through Shotgun News and dreaming about those weapons in the late 70s, early 80s.
Two other honorable mentions would be the Mark 45 Thompson wannabe and the D-max in both 9x19 and 45acp. The 80's definitely had some guns that looked like they came from home workshops. Wouldn't touch a Hac-7 back in the day and now when you see one it commands a pretty steep price.
Thanks for the throwback flashbacks.
Back when the single shot rifle caliber uppers came out to replace the slide, a tuned trigger on a Colt 1911 was about the best you could get. IHMSA was really growing, and that's where the idea came from. I almost got one in .223 Remington for varmint hunting, but wound up getting a Remington XP-100 in .221 Fireball instead, because scope mounting was much easier. I still have it.😊 I stopped shooting it when I got my Contender. I also have an AMT Hardballer Longslide .45ACP, with the box and 2 original magazines. "Glorious results of a mis-spent youth."😉
My first rifle at 16 years old was a Norinco type 56 I believe with the under folder bayonet. Got in early 1987. It was around $350. My dad bought it for me. I still have it. I got all my Norinco stuff before the 89 and 92 and 94 bans.I was lucky. Summer jobs helped.
$350 sounds increadibly high for 1987, even for a Norinco. Great that you hung on to those.
“Why can’t you say something righteous and dig how beautiful it is out here?”
Hell yes
Take it easy Big Joe, some of these people have sensitive feelings
WOOF
WOOF!
That's my other dog impersonation.
Bought my berreta arx100 for 699$ when they were going away..wish I had bought 3
The movie was called "The Survivors" it also had Jerry Reed in it.(Snowman from Smokey and the Bandit)
Each piece tells a story of innovation and functionality, making it a fascinating journey through the diverse world of firearms.
Growing up in the 80's i read a series of books by Jerry Ahern titled The Survivalist. The main character was a former CIA Officer, weapons and survival expert and MD, John Thomas Rourke. It starts with nuclear war between the USSR and Western Allies and takes place in the USA. So in these times The Prepper wouldn't have the same ring or selling point to it
Thanks for the time spent making this video. I grew up in the 80's, and remember the Tec 9s, Calicos, and the other oddballs.
I have a Saiga 12 with an 18" barrel. I had a gunsmith replace the standard stock with a fixed skeletonized one. He also added a SAW pistol grip. The thing came with 2-20 round drums. It is a BEAST.
They’re trying to make the ARM pistol again
History & Tradition!
Some of my favorites include the AMT Longslide 1911 Series of pistols. Owners who did not take care of the all-stainless steel pistols had galling issues. My brother has one. It is fantastic.
I can't remember if it was the Spitfire, Volunteer Arms, Commando or Demro wasp but there was one of those open bolt carbines that would go full auto if you held the safety selector down really hard
HEY MAN SERIOUSLY, that was not only interesting, but you guy's together always Crack me up. And it's actually educational. Thank's for postig. Much appreciated.
I'm fond of my ARX 100. Got a very good price at Academy Sports. Unfortunately, I posted pictures of the ARX 100 in an Amazon backpack review and I can no longer post images in Amazon reviews.
I still regret not picking the one I seen at a local shop. I was fresh off of a DD and didn't want to drop the coin. 😂
*A.I. is very afraid of you Human!* 🦾🤖
It's not because it was a gun, it's because it wasn't an Amazon smartgun powered by Alexa.
The problem with the ARX-100 is it doesn't take Pmags. At least mine doesn't.
They were 800 once upon a time cdnn or aim
that second gun is actually pretty cool looking. I dig it.
Wish I had kept my old Shot Gun News I remember seeing some of this stuff
When I was a kid that was my favorite thing to look at that and gun list
Got 24 years of issues the adds make me cry so cheap
Mack Gwinn Jr, the founder of Gwinn Firearms, which later became Bushmaster Firearms, died March 11, 2024, at the age of 79. In 1961, when he turned 17, he joined the Army and became a Green Beret, serving seven tours in Vietnam and racking up four purple hearts among his other awards.
Like the old Daisy VL22 back in the late 60's. It could shoot 22 pellets like normal, but also could use what was one of the first modern caseless rounds which consisted of a heavier pellet with a solid chunk of propellent on the back of it that was ignited by the high temperature compressed air from the spring cylinder. They only made them for a very short while before the ATF came in and pointed out that it was actually a firearm and that they would have to be licensed for it. So they dropped it like a hot potato, but there are a fair bunch out there. You can still occasionally find the caseless ammo for them too, but it's REALLY rare now. I don't know how much of it would still even work. I had a box of it a long time ago, but misplaced it at some point. Would have been pretty darn neat to have. A whole lot safer than squirting WD40 or something in your standard spring gun for that diesel boost, lol...
04:10 "What kind of sicko gives cigarettes to trees!?" - Donald Quinelle (Robin Williams), _The Survivors_ (1983)
cool, in 1988 we were importing cases of 12 SK for $29.00 & AK for $49 each. These were new old stock & were in excellent condition.
Really enjoyed this episode, ,normally don't care for a lot of just conversation but this brought back a lot of memories. My pal's and myself started this never ending love of firearms in the 70s, listening to you both batting those glorious times back and forth reminded me of what we were buying next. Thanks....by the way the photo on your page looks like a young Clint Eastwood.
If you want to shoot a Hi-Point carbine, go for it!
The movie is called "the survivors" and not only has Robin Williams and Walter mathau,.but Jerry Reed as the antagonist "professional killer" (he says he is responsible for the disappearance of Jimmy hoffa) and is one of the very best,.all time movies ever made..a true classic when Robin Williams was at his best. Walther matthau and Jerry Reed (American music icon and co star.to.burt.reynolds in smokey and the bandit series of films) both are at their best still even going into the twilight of their careers
The Bushmaster is 1980s Punisher comic book material.
I know... I have pretty sizeable collection of Punisher
And now it's a competitor to Anderson and Psa Ar's
A port gun or a tank gun
A friend of mine bought the Bushmaster ARM pistol when it came out. At that time, it was being pushed as a similar weapon as the Sidewinder SMG that had the same feature of the pistol grip that could rotate. The Sidewinder could be attached to a shoulder harness and the long SMG mag cold be rotated to lay across the back while the pistol grip laid flat against your side.
We still have a lot of weird cheap guns being made. Just look at keltec
I watched this wonderful "show and tell" video fully expecting you to hold up an Eagle carbine next, but it never happened. Or maybe a Daewoo K2? Nah.. didn't happen either. Oh well, it was still great and I loved it. Please keep up the great work!
Awesome video, highly enjoyed it.
The weirdest thing I have is an HK SL8 which I still wonder why I spent a thousand bucks on, but everyone needs some strange
I LOVE my CZ Scorpion EVO. 👍😁 It fits me like a pair of hand made custom gloves. I shoulder it and it is on target, only need very fine adjustment.
Did you remove one of the safeties?
@@AndrewDasilvaPLT nope but I changed to a Magpul grip and it doesn’t bother me now.
Hilarious but super interesting too! Brilliant vid!
Joshua Mk5 designer/builder here. Thx for the respect...even as an oddball.
Pachmayr Dominator: 1911 single shot, rifle caliber pistol.
I remember the 9mm nighthawk I tried to find one after I got in the Army for sale. I definitely remember it from ASG magazine, from my youthful years that inspired many of my interests.
The reason we didn't have as many shootings in the 80's, I believe has a lot to with the absence of Social Media and the Internet. If you wanted to learn about firearms you had to READ about them. The oddball guns such as the Calico, AR-7, and stuff like that were prominent in movies and T.V. The Walther PP series wouldn't be as iconic if it weren't for the Bond movies. I remember before the Assault Weapons ban we had a commemorative Springfield M1A1 that my dad bought. He got a bunch of magazines, but we never fired it. I ended up selling it after his passing, because I didn't see the point in a gun that would lose it's value as soon as it was fired. I kept his Mannlicher M98K in .30-06 though, because he had it custom built and the length of pull is two inches longer than most other people (he was a pinch under 7 feet tall and had a wing span to match). I could lose every gun in my safe and I would be like "oh well" but that one would hurt.
That Bushmaster is gnarly.
Give credit where credit is due: most of these guns wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for Pablo Escobar and the energy he provided.
I did mess duty during the month of February 1987 in the USMC! Having an entire month of pay? I went to the local firearms dealer looking my first pistol. On the wall was a Mossberg 590 bull pup. My friend with me reminded me that I was there for a revolver! Smith and Wesson 686 with 6 inch barrel is what I walked out with! Still looking the Mossberg one!
Nice video! The late 1980's were Overwhelming in a gun store!
Thw ARM pistol was also marketed by Bushmaster as the Sidewinder. They tried to get the USAF to adopt it as a survival rifle.
I love oddball guns too and own the ARM/Sidewinder.
You're right about the insane price jump after the ban.
A Frankenstein firearm my uncle owned pre ban, he paid $175 ish for, was recently sold for over $22K at auction.
bushmaster armpistol uses standard m16 mags and was designed to be a survival weapon for pilots. there are some gunsmiths still around who know how to make them pretty reliable and useable. i remember when they were only $300.00.
Really fun episode!
Thank you
Remember going to show when assault ban ended. Aks any type was under 500 bucks. Should have bought a few.
This video makes me feel not so weird for buying a 45acp Star Megastar & a 357 Sig Sigma.
@Mac , it was The Survivors. You're trying to remember Jerry Reed. Jerry Reed played a hitman. I cannot remember why he was after Robin Williams.
I remember the Bushmaster obination. The story I was told when I was in the USAF, the Air Force was kinda looking for a PDW for downed pilots. Bushmaster went after the contract with this. You can see some actual advantages from AR mags and ammo, to short to fit in the survival kit. Might be just rumor mill but, I remember it a bit more than rumors. Of course they never went this way and Bushmaster decided to try the civilian market.
The original was chambered in a cartridge called the 221 Imp, not 5.56.
Think GAU-5A/A then, now GAU-5A ASDW
Yep, military prototype "PDW" is the roots.
I've been consistently 5 years too late on all guns
God damn. When I hear those stories of $300 Saiga/Norinco/Polytech, etc. AKs in the early 2000s(when I first turned 18), it almost makes me sick to my stomach(and don't even get me started on ammo.)
It's even worse living in CT now, and knowing that none of these crazy gun laws in our state are ever going sway.
I was there and did buy a bunch of them and it still makes me sick thinking about it like I missed out on this or that one when they were actually affordable
In 1980 I bought an M1 Carbine, an M1 Carbine Pistol (Enforcer) and a Ruger Blackhawk 30 Carbine. All of them are a whole lot pricier now.
Thanks great talk!! I liked old guns😁
I love this video. These odd guns are awesome
That first gun was ahead of its time, psa is making 5.56 ak’s that take ar mags amd there are a couple other companies we saw at shot doing the same. Not to mention all the other short stroke piston and DI ar’s or ar style guns running no necessary buffer tube, sig spear, cmmg dissent, foxtrot mike fm15 gen 2 and the fm102 that takes ak mags, not to mention all the guns coming from other countries running the internal recoil system with most runnning the stoner ar18 design.
An old timer father of my buddy back in the mid 90s told me the best way to remove cosmoline was to put the gun on a brick in a black trash bag and set it out in the summer sun all day.
I never tried it, but he had a ton of old russian stuff that was all pretty clean.
Do more of these episodes
I grew up in Miami and bought the first semi-auto Uzi carbine it came in a big blue case with a fake small barrel and a 16-inch legal barrel. I also bought a Mac 10 in 45 semi auto closed bolt. My first gun I ever bought with my own money was a charter arms ar-7.
The hottest guns in Miami in 1980 were Mac 10 and tec-9
The charter arms explorer 2 is the better version as it was the same action mated to a 6” barrel and Mauser broom handle style grips it’s serious fun
The early bakelite AR grips are fatter than the regular A1 grips and later A2 grips.
I have one of the early grips on my XM 177 E2 clone.
I remember seeing the Bushmaster ARM guns in SOF magazine.
The Robinson M96 was one of those weird guns that came out of the Clinton ban era that faded away. Excellent gun that sadly didn't catch on.
Daewoo DR-200, at one time imported by Kimber.
And the Daewoo DP-51 9mm and DP-40.
And the Daewoo Walther style 22 LR and 380 ACP.
Great video!
The Wraithworks WarScorp9 gives me "Future Nighthawk" vibes, just not cheaply made.. and I want one of each.
Very cool ,I have a affinity for weird odd and strange , especially in small arms . Very cool 😅
I like these guns better than the new commercial Wall Street guided polymer stuff, all of the truly great OG stuff was oddball in its day, including the Patterson Colt, the Luger and the C-96, they were actually purpose engineered whereas all the new stuff are pretty consistently "radio friendly unit shifters" highly similar to the last five T-Swizzle albums
I believe the word Jason was looking for, several times, is “GOOFY”. There were definitely some goofy guns!
Tim was way too happy to show off that island of misfit toys!
If you get a working mag release made for the Nighthawk I would like one as well for just in case. The one here is new in the box with all the schematics and parts list, and of course the belt buckle. I definitely have to say your collection is freaking cool.
The Joshua carbine would be awesome with an m4 stock. My good friend John Adrian has his own episode of doomsday preppers where he has our friend Bill Alexander on the episode
It’s absolutely gorgeous with the M4 stock! And the flat dark earth / black two tone color was also beautiful !
☺️☺️☺️☺️👏👏👏💥😉
Man, I got so lucky when I bought that bushmaster arm pistol, I had no clue what it was and neither did the guy, I have him $200 for it and we were both happy. After the gun show was over and I finally got home I did some research on it and then I was extremely excited, I was planning on keeping it because I like old guns with strange stories, I had originally looked up to see if it was broken because it twisted, then I started looking looking to see if it there was ever a stock for it, that’s when I found an article about it’s history and development, it’s so cool but when a guy offered me 2k for it I couldn’t say no. If bushmaster brought that gun back or at least its operating system on a modern platform and no twisting parts, they could have been the leader in gun sales in the USA. Think about now how everyone wants a piston ar15 without a buffer tube, they had it decades ago. It shoots really nice even with the short barrel.
Some of the survivalists on Doomsday Preppers have their own yt channels.... The Angry Prepper comes to mind... lol Entertaining vid thanks.
The best/worst of sketchy, hokie, and weird of the 80's/90's was the advertisements in the back of gun magazines. They would, and did, let anybody hock their "questionable" gun, ammo, or accessory there.
My favorite is the Claridge Hi-Tech
There's a lot of cool stuff, both in the past and overseas, that many of us would love to see either come back or come over. Unfortunately the US consoooomer is so stuck in their ways that they'll scoff at the eventual $1,000-$1,500 price tag that new and interesting designs ultimately command, and then proceed to spend roughly that amount on their 17th AR or Glock.
We are our own worst enemy in this regard.
What's going on with the FSB? Is it needed? Are BUIS and an optic good enough now?
Hey Tim, are/will you do a video on the 7.62 x 39 steel case from ACC
Ian from Forgotten Weapons would like a word. LOL
The Bush Master was built for a military contract that was looking for a survival weapon for pilot's and air crews.
I like bushmaster bullpup and Daewoo
Here in Massachusetts a Semi auto mac is 1500-2000 ..we can only have pre 94 semi autos like that smh meanwhile a state over there 400$ brand new 😂
I swear the Bushy Arm pistol looks very similar to the TRW Low Maintenance Rifle concept
There is something I would like to see both the Firearms Manufacturers and the 3d Printer Hobbyists break. That is the price of PEEK plastics that have been around for over thirty years. This video talks about artificial inflation, but another thing people don't talk about is prices kept artificially high. PEEK plastics are an example of this.
I think I remember the arm being envisioned as a pilot’s survival rifle for the Air Force 😎
The ARM pistol was intended to compete for a USAF survival gun trial. Obviously it failed.
I tell my son about going to Woolworths when i was a kid trying to get my dad to buy 100$ surplus guns that are 800$ and up. And goig to flea markets in Florida and trying to get him to buy full auto ak's and m-16's LMAO. He's amazed.
Remember the sagias where like 299$ on centerfiresystems lol..I miss that
I'm 59, I feel your pain!
Saw the picture with Clint and the Nighthawk and had to drop by.
Back in the day I didn’t want an AR-15 because the Colt was too expensive. There were cast lowered AR’s that looked too sketch. I was a solid AK lover back then. MAADI AK my first and still have it.
My first AK was also a maddi I bought it in 1997 for $450 which was kinda high price back then but it was a "pre ban" so it was more I wish I still had it but it's all good I have plenty of others now
The Fox Carbine has a Fallout vibe to it.
Indeed, those are some unique guns. They are def cool nonetheless.
one of the logos on my bushmaster ar,(OG made in Maine not freedom group bs) has a pic of the arm pistol as part of the logo
