Old Classic Car VLOG! a walk & talk intro to our old cars

  • This Old Classic Car vlog is in response to a few suggestions/comments received on recent uploads, asking whether I'd done a single video simply introducing each member of the OCC "menagerie", or fleet. I'd done something similar in the past, but for the benefit of newer subscribers and watchers in particular, I agreed that it was time to do an updated "walk & talk" about the classic cars and other old vehicles we own at OCC HQ, and a brief back story to each of them.
I needed to have a move around in the garage anyway, so it seemed like the ideal opportunity to put this vlog together, while the cars and sun were both out at the same time ...
There have been a few departures since the last walk & talk (two years ago maybe?) in order to enable a couple of new arrivals to happen, so even longer-term watchers may find it of interest too. My youthful assistant kindly offered to help move the cars during the filming of this one. A couple of tool acquisitions made earlier that same day also make it in, to add a further sprinkling of excitement(!) to this classic cars video.
A big thanks as always to everyone that follows the Old Classic Car channel and watches these uploads. Likes, comments & subs really help the channel continue to grow, there are hundreds of different classic car videos on the channel now so please take a stroll through previous uploads to see if there's anything you've missed.

I would be sad to see the 4CV leave the building so soon, it is such a cute little car. Some tinkering on the Morris Minor should make it road worthy very soon I think. You will need to source a tweed suite and goggles to be able to drive it though, Toot Toot !! Thanks for the update Rick.👍👍

My favourites for sure, the Renault and the Standard. A40's were a great little car in their day too, I had one briefly back in about 1978, someone had painted it Daytona yellow with mat black bonnet and boot lid (which probably looked ridiculous but I didn't think so in 1978), I didn't keep it very long and it was sold to help fund the purchase of my next Dolomite Sprint, which at the time I already had two of.

Love all the old vehicles, but my personal favourite is the Anglia as it holds many memories for me. My Grandfather had a 1953 Popular in the same colour. It had a new engine fitted sometime during its life and was always serviced by the local Ford main dealer. It was known as 'Upsy' and when it misbehaved, he would say "down Upsy". He gave up driving in the early 1970's and I did consider buying it, but was only 12 years old at the time. He eventually sold it for £15 !!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the review. My favorite would be the Little Dodge since I had a 1952 half-ton pickup series B3B I enjoyed for a few years. Same flathead six, I believe. I'm fascinated by the Morris Minor project. I have the desire to build a cyclecar here in the US and that Morris looks very much like one except it has an in-line four like a "real" car. I look forward to your posts on it. Maybe when you have spare time you could take us through the garage ephemera that decorates the place?

Hello Richard . Your son (Harvey?) has certainly got the hang of proper driving ! Everyone has their idea of what you should or shouldn't keep ! You certainly have a bent towards pre-war vehicles . I get the impression that YOUR father had a panache for pre war cars and commercials and you've followed quite literally in his footsteps (?) and it looks like to continue , although perhaps a GT6 on the horizon ? Thanks Richard .

Yep Harley is quite handy behind the wheel of these cranky old things :-) Funnily enough dad was never into really old cars until I persuaded him to get into "classic" cars a few years ago, although he'd always run and maintained secondhand cars. Pre-war cars, and commercials, are all of my own doing!

In my collection, I have an '88 MG Metro, an '86 Porsche 924S and a '73 Austin 1300 GT. The former two are roadworthy and used each year, the latter two belonged to my late father - and the last, the GT - has been family owned for 42 years and off the road for 38 years 'sitting in the corner of a garage'. It's easy to let a much loved and important car sit in the background, while you acquire newer cars or classics that you can use straight away. I'm 34 years old now and I don't have the restoration skills to bring the GT back to its former glory - but through saving and being wise about who I source to do the restoration work I am about to send the car off to be restored at a price that is right for me. Although there was so much sentimental value attached to it, I was not going to spend far over its value 10 years ago (I also didn't have the funds!).

I do hope you keep the Minor, I've just returned from 8 days away, firstly the pre-war Minor rally/tour last weekend in Rutland, then leaving there Monday morning I headed north to Scotland and as far north as Rannoch Moor and down through Glen Coe. Well, I've been with you a while but it's always good to have an update or looksee to find out where things are at or if I've missed a notification / video where things got done or if you have maybe progressed something unfilmed.
I saw the Minor video and absolutely loved hearing that little car wind over and fire up. I am also a big fan of the Standard 8 and the A40 - the Standard because a) I own a couple of 1970s Triumphs and read up extensively on the history of both companies pre and post their merger in 1945 and b) the little 8 always reminded me of a remodelled A30 and the A30 and A35 were staples of several branches of my family before - and long after - I was born....and in fact I have owned both and am looking to find another one now. (As an aside, if I could find a good A40 Somerset, I'd happily have one of those instead as they look like someone took an A30 and inflated it, but I digress).
Your A40 Farina MkI (which will have an A35 speedometer, albeit reconfigured with the indicator light where the ignition light was on the A30/35) is my favourite of that generation of the model....and yours appears to be the saloon (fixed rear window and a boot lid that opened on the bottom half) as opposed to the Countryman with the split tailgate, so yours I believe is a bit rarer. I like the styling of the MKI with the separate headlight / indicator surrounds and smaller grille. The headlight surrounds always reminded me of those on an A99 Westminster....but I never did get around to trying a set out. From memory, the MkI still ran the 948cc engine, but that's not a bad thing. They were a lovely incarnation of the A-series and quite easily modified, although replacing the rear axle with one from a similar era Morris Minor so you had a full fluidic brake system, was definitely a must! Like the Standard 8 and the A30/35, I love their simplicity - pull-up windows and simple dash layout, although you did have to know which switch did what as they weren't labelled!
Of the 8 and the A40, I cannot pick a clear winner as to my favourite. I do like all of your vehicles though because of their honest appearance and - as you put it - nothing overly restored but kept as much in original condition as possible. The life wear on the Dodge truck is just lovely and the ex-Army van looks more a well-looked-after survivor than a museum piece, so to me, she looks perfect. So does the Prefect, although it is probably nearing time for another coat of the old Linseed...but she still looks grouse. The Minor to me will be outstanding when she's done and an absolute peach on show days or Sunday afternoon cruises. I was also shocked when I realised the first of the NA model MX5s were pushing 30 a few years ago! They are still a great daily vehicle for so many and there are still plenty on the roads over here in New Zealand and cheap as chips for parts, service and indeed to purchase.
I am looking to move my Stag and my Mini on shortly and keep the 2500S, but I also want a modern for the times when the 2500S decides she doesn't want to play ball for a while. I think an MX5 is the perfect answer there.......and it will be a TRUE classic in around ten years too!
All the best and thanks for sharing.

Yes, as our years advance, you have to take a pragmatic view. Im not sure if you are "technically" fully retired from the world of paid employment yet, but in my experience, i have never been so busy since retirement. I dont know how on earth i managed to fit in a 40-50 hour working week (anything up to 60 hrs in earlier years) as now, days seem to vanish. I have, just recently, ceased my wedding car business and naturally, with the cesation of income from it, have had to significantly downsize. Considerable grief was experienced in being forced to chuck away 15 years of accumulated (junk: in wifes opinion. Usefull bits in mine) as i had to give up a rented commercial unit, and compress everything into a largish 2 car garage and small workshop. The decision which to keep, which to wave goodbye to, dictated by space and what was manageable. The much beloved 34 Daimler 15 has to go, but is currently living in luxury, occupying the space that should be for the Daimler V8-250, which is outside and neccesitated the urgent purchase of an all weather cover. The long term project is the 33 Armstrong Siddeley Fifteen Long, one of only a handful left, in much need of body refurbishment due to ash decay. These are largely skills i dont have, so its very much back to school for an old dog to learn new tricks! At least you have Harley as apprentice/assistant but many days i spend hours figuring out how to do two man jobs on my own. I really must get out more and get some mates! I wish I had your skills to video document what im doing, as it has certainly helped inspire me, watching the trials and progress of others like yourself.
My project is akin to your A40 with quite a way to go. Engine due shortly, which has been fully rebuilt by specialists Chase Engines. Time to rip out the Pinto which has been keeping the old girl going these past 20 years, and put a Siddeley heart, Side valve straight 6, back where it belongs.
Great video as always Rick. Boy how I wish we were neighbours!

What do I like in your collection? Your Ford Anglia, The Morris & the Standard 8. Your A40 is clearly your absolute keeper. Do not get me wrong, I owned a Morris Minor Van & it was the best vehicle I ever owned. I have also owned a pair of 2CVs. But when it comes to foreign vehicles to own as classics, my feelings are always a little "be careful" because of the spares situation. 2CVs are OK. I do like big Dodge, but that is far too big for me. Little Dodge is still too big for me. The little Renault is clearly a nice to have owned for a while.
Sorry I have zero knowledge about MG saloon cars. Swansea was more into other saloon cars. Lots of Fords, Vauxhall's, Austin's, Morris, Jag's, Standard, Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam etc. MG's tended to be sports cars. The Police ran MGA hard tops. along with the normal Wolseley & Jag's. The Police bikes were BSA 250cc C15's & Triumph single carb 650cc T110. They also introduced Panda Cars Morris Minors. Needless to say once the mini came out it became very popular. I remember that My boss & My Fathers Boss both had Bentley's & Mini Coopers. The other very popular car was the 1500 Riley & Wolseley.
