This is surely the Best Ever lighting of the Olympic cauldron in recent history, surpassing even Barcelona's brilliant & elegant stroke of simplicity. But this is just Wow! Very very symbolic, very moving and emotional - Technology bowing to Man. The whole 'Space Odyssey' concept and the dramatic score are just amazing.
4 years later but it doesnt matter, it is symbolic yes, but not for (only) that reason, the cauldron bows down to the country that originated the olympic games! Symbolizing that the olympic games are back home!
I remember this when Athens was chosen to host this Olympics after it returns 108 years since the first ever modern Olympics also the birthplace of the Olympics, was one of the best, the person to light the Olympic flame into the cauldron was not supposed to light the flame into the cauldron it was the 200m reigning Olympic Champion in the Track and Field is the favorite to given the honor, but he withdrew from the games because he said that he and his training partner which happened to be the Olympic Silver Medalist in the women's 100m in T and F, had a motorcycle crash which many believe that is was staged to avoid a random drug test. As a result, he was chosen to be the final torchbearer.
the camera direction cut of this video is much better than the one of the full opening ceremony available on the Olympic channel. Much more beautiful and epic ..
The Opening Ceremony authentic original video was wayyyyy better than the lame one that was uploaded in the Olympic channel!!! The OC version seemed like backstage scenes compared with the prototype broadcasted all over the world! There were 3 different video versions. The olympic one, the american one (broadcasted in USA) & the greek one broadcasted in the rest of the world) You can guess which video was (by far!) the best! 👌🇬🇷
The original song played after the lighting of the cauldron is "Ela pare mou ti lipi" by famed greek composer Manos Chatzidakis. But it was vastly adapted. The dramatic music playing during the lighting of the cauldron is the theme from the film Pirogov, Opus 76a: Finale by Dmitry Sostakovich.
only I see it as racist af? 😂 Really I consider many European people to be racist af when meeting Greeks on economic issues dispite the fact that every country once in a while had its downs and ups... seems people are cruel when it comes to other nations but when it comes to them self -critics aren't so effective
Notice how the torch bows to the athlete to be lit. Not the other way around!. Man as creator and center of creation! This is Greece
The Greeks they don’t nieces to gods . Because they are gods are similar to humans . That is the difference

This is great… I’m still more impressed by Barcelona, Sydney, and Beijing.

The music is the final of Pirogov Suite of Dimitri Shostakovich
The music is so powerful and when the cauldron comes to the flame... Epic!

Beijing 2008 was the most dangerous cauldron lighting!

Sergei Prokofiev -Pirogov Variations.
@@remicolson6312 Actually it's Dimitri Shostakovich's Pirogov- Finale
trivia: The Athens cauldron was fueled by real Euro money bills! They were literally burning money in the flame!
