      Can I ask what the rifugio at 2:45 is called? Also I want to really recommend valle d'aosta. Beautiful rifugios and amazing sights. Mostly single day trips though. If you want the longer hikes I can really recommend doing a tour from Glassier to Rifugio Chiarella Amiante and then cross to swiss via the mountains. Love your videos and good luck :)

    • @felixjochems1238
      @felixjochems1238 Před 2 lety +3

      Also wanna add that you went a pretty touristy route. If you go to the higher rifugios at 3-4000M you won't see as many people and you can get that more 'rustic' feel you were searching for. If you think about it, you're a bit of an outlier for the travelling company. They wanna attract the most people, so I don't think they are used to those really hard trails you were looking for.

    Kraig, I made this hike myself two weeks ago. It was. absolutely phantastic. I had a blast! I used your guide to make reservations of the refuges along the trail and your map to hike. I made slight modifications, though, due to my travel from Poland to the trail head. I started hiking late (around 5 PM) in La Villa, north of Corvara, and stayed at Rifugio Gardenacia. On the second day I stayed at Rifugio Frara and then detoured at Rifugio Pisciadu a bit, which I then strongly regreted. I accidentaly lost the trail because it was hardly visible. When I reached closer to the end I ran into a horrible via ferrata. Never ever in my life was I so scared. It was very dangerous. With my heavy bagback and strong wind it was very hard to pull myself up. My legs were shaking but I made it. I strongly recommend everyone to follow your map and not to detour as there is no information on the trail marks. On my 4th day I stayed at Rifugio Marmolada. It wasn't any better than Rifugio Fedaia where you stayed at. They didn't speak English very well and the customer service wasn't as great. The entire area around Marmolada glacier is not interesting in general. All the rest was awesome! The views and the food - man! Very good! I had a lot of adventures and had really good time during my 7 days hike. I want to thank you for what you do, without you my hike would be impossible. Thank you, thank you, thank you. :)

  • @capitanfindusfi8119
    @capitanfindusfi8119 Před 2 lety +115

    Hey Kraig I'm from Italy and I've been in those places for 5yrs and still counting. Please note that Corvara and Canazei are one of the most frequented places during summer. That's why I may suggest you not to pay tour guides over there as towns and refugees are really well equipped and served. On day 3 you've been to Piz Boé (mountain crossing borders between 3 territories: Sudtirol, Trento and Belluno provinces) and yeah, as its one of the best places within Dolomiti, it's getting too much touristic because of cable cars. However, cable cars are there just because there were ruins of world wars, so they decided to build them to reach historic points.
    Trust me if I say that if you go to places not that touristic (Piz Boè is one of the most) you'll find much less cable cars and more isolation.
    Keep it up with your great work!

      Which is the best month to do the Dolomites trek? July/August or is it possible to do it a little earlier

    • @capitanfindusfi8119
      @capitanfindusfi8119 Před 2 lety +31

      @@strawberrynoodles5470 it depends on which kind of hike are you looking for.
      If you are interested in a long hike such as Dolomiti's "Alta via" but with lot more isolated places (also less expensive), you should consider Alta Via n°6, also known as "Alta via dei Silenzi" (which means "Alta via of silence"). It's a bit less panoramic as it avoids Trentino Alto-Adige region which IMHO has the best views but it's by far the most crowded place.
      If you are interested in hikes with a historical value due to World War I, I'm not aware of a single long hike crossing them so I may have suggest short ones (10 to 20km) but still good: something such as Mt. Lagazuoi (near Cortina d'Ampezzo, quite famous and expensive) in which you descend/ascend through a long tunnel made by Italian soldiers; Or you could go near Italian/Austrian border in Val Pusteria and go hiking to 3 Cime di Lavaredo (one of the most famous but still not that crowded) or Monte Piana which is full of WWI covers and small tunnels
      If you are interested in panoramic hikes I may suggest you Val di Fassa near Moena (which is where Kraig ended it's journey), up until "Torri del Vajolet" and then move on to Lake Antermoia; or "Rifugio Mantova" near Mt. Vioz in Pejo (still Trentino Alto-Adige) which is one of the highest hut in Europe (3535m). However, the most scenic places I've seen are located near Pinzolo / Madonna di Campiglio, which are very expensive and very popular, even if highest hikes are not that much populated because it's a place for families.
      Everything there over 2000mt is just magnificient.

    • @capitanfindusfi8119
      @capitanfindusfi8119 Před 2 lety +8

      @@AnkitGupta-wj1wd due to the pandemic, Dolomites have been taken by assault by tourists. However, July is by far the most recommended, expensive, frequented and hot, even if sometimes it could hail or rain for an entire day. I prefer from mid to late June until early July or late August until early September, as the weather becomes way more unpredictable outside those months

I too prefer to hike it up (also, terrified of cablecars lol) but I'm happy people like my grandma can use the cable car. Keep up the good work!!!

      well said!! I was quite annoyed with that comment. What's it to anybody how you hike (or don't hike) if you're not bothering anybody? The Dolomites were my backyard for 4 years and guess what? there are TONS of places with amazing views that don't have cable cars. Dedicating time to do a little research you could've found places like Lago Coldai or Col di Prá that have amazing views and no cable cars but I'm sure it was much easier paying an agency to plan it for you.... I never let how other people decide to enjoy nature affect how I enjoy it (unless it's a speaker blasting music on the trail) Defo lost cool points with that comment...

      @@dougmorales6929 I think Kraig had some questionable and insulting comments here regarding the European hikers, using cable cars as well as how to plan a multiple day hike etc. I also recognized that because he hadn't planned his own route basically he did the least spectacular hike in the Dolomites. Seriously, I know Dolomites quite well and all of the other long hiking routes in the Dolomites are much more spectacular than Alta via 2, his agency chosed the worst one, maybe it was intentional :D.

    My only recommendation would be to book way in advance usually as mountain huts in Italy get filled quite fast in the summer. As they are known for some of the best food and quite decent accomodations. And calling to book, managing to reach someone, and exchange a message in broken Italian can be difficult. That's the only advantage of a tour guide who has to deal with all of it themselves and guarantee you a spot somewhere.

    Loved this video. I don't mind the length. The drone shots were amazing, such beauty. To see how small humans are against the backdrop of awesome geology and nature. Thanks for taking us along and the guide section was great! I'm planning to go to the Dolomites with the same booking guide company you used, but being 66 and hiking with others my age or older, we'll stick to the towns and trails.
