As an absolute beginner, you have not only inspired me, but your guidance and teaching style is totally on point.
Thank you for your honest approach, no gizmos to sell it, and most of all the gentle humour to finish it off.

Thank you so much for the lesson on mixing your own black. Many years ago I purchased my first watercolor book - Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie. I am so glad I learned from the beginning to mix my own blacks from complimentary colors. Your demonstration was a perfect reminder of mixing beautiful grays. I am 70 years old and am still learning. You are my favorite on-line watercolor teacher.

Wonderfully instructive video on the importance of not relying on premixed black watercolors. This is really so very important. Might I also say just how much I appreciate your humble approach to painting, admitting it is still work and requires practice after a decade of painting and for so openly sharing the delightful outtakes at the end. You exemplify the best that a tutor can bring her students! xx

Loved this one! I just finished teaching my pal all about how to mix black with many variations and these exact colours were one of the choices! When I started to paint I was taught to NEVER use paint straight out of a tube nor to EVER use black in a tube so have been mixing my own for years. Watching what lovely things you do with tube black made me question what was right or wrong or better. and now I think it is alll ok. Mix, don’t mix, add this or that it is alllllll ok. Enjoy the painting. End of story. But I have to say that I still own zero tubes of black and still mix my own as that translucent something makes mixed “ black” not quite so “dark hole”- like. Love how and what you teach. You are so special. And funnnnnYYYYY!!!!

The first time I used winsor blue I remarked that it Looks like pthalo blue then after comparing the two I believed it about both the two winsor colors. They are both pthalo.

Back in the 60's, I was reading the Sword of Shannara series. The cover art, which I drooled over, was done by the Brothers Hildebrandt. I later read that they never used black, finding it dull and dead. They use purple. That has always stuck with me, and even now, I add blue or purple to my blacks and I go for payne's grey for that blue tinge. But I really like these two colors mixed for black, and the variations of green and red you get. I'm going to try this going forward. Thanks for the video!

I just wanted to add that Alizarin Crimson is PR83 it is not lightfast. It fades and fades rapidly. I learned this doing research on pigments before I invested in my artist grade watercolors. And sure enough several cardinals I painted from sample/trial sets, framed and hung faded to nothing in about two years.

Your tutorials are amazing, and I am so happy to have found you on Skillshare! Thanks for all the great information you provide. I love the bloopers at the end of your videos! They make me giggle especially because you are so put together and serious during the initial video!
