Is Sleep Apnea a VA Disability
Sleep apnea is a condition that obstructs the airways during sleep, causing breathing to stop and start. It affects many veterans and can interact with other conditions like PTSD.
Sleep apnea symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air while asleep, drowsiness, dry mouth, and headaches during waking hours.
There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and treatment-emergent central. Obstructive sleep apnea develops when something physically obstructs airflow, like relaxed throat muscles, the tongue, or large tonsils. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain fails to send the right signals to the body to facilitate proper breathing. Treatment-emergent central sleep apnea occurs when the treatment for obstructive sleep apnea affects brain function and causes central sleep apnea to emerge or persist.
A veteran can be service connected for any type of sleep apnea as long as there is a connection to service. Additionally, a veteran can apply for secondary service connection if a service-connected condition causes sleep apnea to develop. Some conditions that can cause or be related to sleep apnea include PTSD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis.
To diagnose sleep apnea, doctors use what is called a sleep study, where they monitor a patient’s sleep in an overnight clinic.
A veteran with service connection for sleep apnea can be rated 0, 30, 50, or 100%. A 0% rating applies to a veteran with sleep apnea whose symptoms are totally managed. A 30% rating applies to a veteran with sleep apnea that causes persistent daytime sleepiness and related symptoms. A 50% rating applies when the veteran requires regular use of a breathing device like a CPAP machine. A 100% rating applies to advanced sleep apnea, which causes carbon dioxide retention and requires medical procedures.
