VIDIOTEQUE : mashup of Radiohead's Videotape + Ideoteque

  • This is a mashup designed to highlight the hidden syncopation in Radiohead's Videotape. The truth lying just below the surface of that brilliant song is now more widely known thanks to Warren Lain's videos on CZcams. Videotape contains a sort of rhythmic illusion. As Radiohead performs it, has a false downbeat or "hidden syncopation" that tricks many listeners into think the downbeat is when the piano, kick drum, and other instruments hit the main chords together. In fact, those chords fall on the "and" of beats 2 and 4. It's not easy for most people to hear it like that, as doing so successfully requires a strong sense of internal rhythm. If you need help hearing the syncopation, think of this mashup as a set of training wheels. You can't ignore the syncopation when the beat (Idioteque, from Kid A, 2000) is smacking you in the face with it. Then, when you get the feel of it, try turning off this video, and putting on any of Radiohead's original recordings of Videotape, such as the original studio recording from In Rainbows (2007), and see if you can get your brain to "switch" to sycopation-hearing mode (this time without the training wheels).
Please check out Warren's original video (an intriguing and detailed story of how the syncopation was discovered) and subscribe to his channel: • The Hidden Syncopation...
Vox borrowed Warren's video and developed it into a different video that explains the idea clearly and concisely:

Very well put. This version DOESNT tear my soul a part like Videotape does.....every time.

This is so helpful. Great work! It really is so difficult to hear the true rhythm without any sort of guiding beat; as soon as it switches to just piano, my brain flips those chords back to the downbeat again. Arghh!!

Natsquack: Thanks. I know what you mean, same problem here. It's getting better with practice but especially when I listen to the album version, I just can't keep my brain from flipping back.

They aren't supposed to be on the downbeat. That's exactly why videotape is hard to play.

Hahaha when I saw your video on the syncopation in Videotape, the first thought that came to mind was Idioteque. I search for both and of course I find you in this video!

One of Radiohead's most upbeat songs with one of their most depressing. A suprisingly asty blend.

THe first thing I thought about when listening with Videotape was "It sound like the idioteque ryhtim could fit here perfectly. Then I find this and I'm glad now to know I was not the only one to realize this. (I like the MTV video beat better than the studio album version)

Just took that audio of Thom playing the piano in the original recording and sped it up to double and triple speed, raising it 1 and 2 octaves. Used Audacity free audio editing ware.
