With this video, we will continue with where our previous video, What are the leading Industrial Automation Job types? (realpars.com/automation-job/), closed with beginning the discussion on Automation Job Interview questions.
So now that we have learned about the Automation Job types let’s move on to learn more about some of the questions you’ll be asked during an interview.
The job description and degree of responsibilities vary and so you should align your capabilities with the experience required. What type of job interview questions will you be asked?
Question 1. What are the five IEC1131 programming languages?
Answer: Instruction List, Structured Text, Ladder Diagram, Function Block and Sequential Function Chart.
Question 2. Explain PID Based Control System?
Answer: PID or Proportional Integral Derivative is widely used in closed-loop control.
PID controllers maintain the output to a device so that there is zero error between process variable input and setpoint to the device.
Question 3. Please explain the difference between a PLC and DCS?
Answer: a PLC is a ruggedized computer used for automating processes.
A DCS is similar to a PLC in that it has rugged computer controllers however the DCS contains multiple autonomous controllers that are distributed throughout a system, also used for automating processes.
    Question 4. What Is Encoder?
Answer: An encoder is a rotary device that outputs digital pulses which from angular motion. The encoder consists of a wheel with alternating clear stripes detected by optical sensors to produce the digital outputs.
Question 5. What Are the different components used in automation?
Answer: The components of the automation system include sensors for sensing temperature, pressure, flow, level and etc.,
Question 6. Who are the leading PLC providers?
Answer: Leading PLC providers include Rockwell Automation Allen Bradley, Siemens, Schneider Modicon, and GE Fanuc.
Question 7. Who are the leading DCS providers?
Answer: The leading DCS providers include Yokogawa, Honeywell, Fisher-Rosemount, ABB, Moore, and Foxboro.
Question 8. Who are the leading SCADA software companies?
Answer: Leading SCADA software companies are Aveva Wonderware, GE Cimplicity, GE iFix, Siemens WinCC, Iconics Genesis64, Inductive Automation Ignition, Rockwell Software FactoryTalk View.
Question 9. What types of sensors are used for measuring?
Answer: Temperature, Pressure, Flow, Level, Conductivity, Density, Ph type sensors.
    Question 10. What is transmitter?
Answer: A transmitter is an electronic device mounted in the field or plant close to a sensor.
The sensor transduces a measured physical variable like temperature and then outputs a low electronic signal to a controller.
Question 11. Why is 4-20 mA preferred over 0-10 V Signal?
Answer: The 0-10 V signal has the tendency to weaken over a long distance because of resistance.
The 4-20 mA can travel a long distance without dropping signal value.
Question 12. Why is 4-20 mA preferred over 0-20 mA signal?
Answer: With 0-20 mA you cannot easily determine between minimum field value and a wire break. With the 4-20 mA, a wire break can be determined.
    Question 13. Difference between 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire transmitters?
Answer: For a 2-wire transmitter the power and signal are transmitted through the same cable. For a 3-wire transmitter, the data signal and power are with respect to common ground and for a 4-wire transmitter two of the wires are used for power and two wires are used for signals.
    Be ready to answer a few more questions, for example;
    - Have you lead any projects, please explain how you were successful?

Yes, kind of accurate. 2 months ago I had a 1 hour 'long' interview at a multinational company and for me the questions were the following (I will list any, including the ones in the video):
    1. What kind of industrial communication protocols do you know? Tell me something about them. (ModbusTCP/RTU,PROFINET,PROFIBUS,etc.)
    2. What is the difference between PROFIBUS/PROFINET? What component is needed to PROFIBUS, how and why we use it? (resistor at the end of the bus)
    3. What are a 5 PLC languages widely used? (IEC standard)
    4. Write an easy PLC program in the language you prefer. (I dont remember correctly but they tested if I could use S,R,Timer,NO input,NC input, Relay output, positive and negative edge detection correctly.)
    5. Tell me about the OB blocks of a PLC (OB1, OB100,..)
    6. There is a sensor, you could use voltage or currect signal, what would you prefer and why?
    7. Difference between 0-20 and 4-20 mA.
    8. Widely known PLC manufacturers

@@vishnukr8010 Current signal is more preferred over Voltage because Voltage will be lost over increased distance which is not the case for current.

When my work (a manufacturing site) held interviews looking for a Automation Project Manager, I was amazed that none of the interviewees could not answer basic questions like: "give me an example of a project that you lead to implement a PLC control system?", "when working in a blue chip team how would you influence others to make your project their focus to achieve your goals?". The interviewees were more interested in being technical about signals and coding, rather than basic team skills.

this video is the equivalent of making sure you have a pulse. very foundational questions. you need to know these things in order to even begin discussing other deeper concepts, but know that the ability to acquire information / answers is more important than already having them!

Excuse me, I've got a little problem with the HMI communication to plc s7 1500. They use a different port, HMI uses rs486 while the plc uses profinet. I've tried to use the Aten converter from rs 485 to ethernet but the HMI still can't communicate with the plc. Please help if you have the answer. Thanks.

BTW some interviewers can give you a Ramsey test or similar the day of the interview. Be sure to have enough time for the interview or ask before getting there if you feel in confidence to do so.

I’m beyond nervous, I’ve worked in food processing plants for 2 years and am very familiar with SCADA interfaces and sensors, etc… but never have had a maintenance position besides doing HVAC since i was 16 with my father… i somehow got a callback for interview for tomorrow, I’m so nervous, I’m a nerd with electronics and love working with my hands so it’s a mix of both my dream jobs, programming and maintenance… i really hope i nail this interview. If i don’t, I’m gonna continue to study and do research to eventually get my career.

    Hi realpars..
I want to ask because I'm still a beginner, how is the principle that the PLC input can directly read the 4-20mA signal which is used as a value in the circuit setting …thankyou

    • @realpars
      @realpars  Před rokem +1

      Hi there,
Thank you for your question! Like the rest of the PLC, the input analog boards are made with various electronic components like transistors, MOSFET, OPS, A/D converters, resistors …etc. The input analog board’s first measurement stage is mainly the A/D converters’ IC chips that take the 4-20mA analog current signal and convert it to digital. It’s a little more complicated than the way it sounds here. Here is a link to help you understand more about the process and electronics.
      Happy learning!
