The Arban exercises on the Bach mouthpieces at the end are hilariously bad. You're clearly trying to make the mouthpieces sound bad on purpose to "prove" your point. I used to play on Bach mouthpieces. They are not my preference now, now I play Curry. But a Bach 1.5C Megatone from the 60s is one of the best Mouthpieces I have ever played. I wouldn't diss a brand just because you can't sound good on it. Judy Saxton plays on a 3C and she's one of the most beautiful sounding players out there. It's ok to not like Bach, but throw them away? Double C is possible on a 7C Bach if you have decent technique... Come on man!

Ive circled around mouthpieces from monette, bach, schilke, curry, yamaha, etc etc. I find my self settling at a 5c because it works for me. Can i hit a double c? no, but I cant on any other mouthpiece either. However, all my favorite players play on bach. phil smith, kevin cobb, ray mase... and so on. first off, your demonstration wasnt very convincing. secondly, its not the mouthpiece, its the player. whatever works for an individual is what they should use. i love my bach 5c. we cant point fingers at brands. its a hunk of metal with a bowl thing, a rim, and an opening. maybe there is a better mouthpiece out there for me, but i really dont care to invest or spend the time looking for it. its been 20 years of search, i think ill stay put. you want a good sound? listen. you want good range, practice the upper register with little effort. you want to sound good and play well? listen and practice. never mind brands and equipment. its all there to make tweaks and certain things a bit easier.

If you are slagging of all Bach mouthpieces I disagree if it's only 7c I agree. I played on a Back 3c as a classical player just before I went to university in the 90s, I joined a Jazz band and it blew my mind hearing the trumpeters screaming. I must have tried every mouthpiece in my quest to hit hight C. Because I was going to be doing orchestral playing my teacher gave me a 1.5c and within 4 too 5 months I could play high C on the Bach 1.5c. I'm not a lead player but since graduating I play on a Bach 1.5c my preferred mouth and if I'm doing a jazz gig second chair that has high Gs above top C I use a Bach 3c. A small cup for endurance a big cup for sound plus the right practise it is not all down to the mouthpiece what works for you.

If you want to take the restrictions off and join the upper echelon of brass players, contact me and we will get to work! In the meantime I stand by my statement : Bach mouthpieces are garbage! What is music without passion? What is knowledge without free speech? I may disagree with Ralph, or may not, but I appreciate his passion and stand. Bach designed his trumpets and mouthpieces commencing about 80 years ago. They have stood the test of time and been the de facto reference standard for all makers and players. That is an outstanding achievement. Bach was a trumpeter and his focus was the symphony: he had a specific sound in mind. I think he had set a limit, too, as the vast majority of orchestral and ensemble pieces do not require much range beyond high E: and range is one reason for the various keys of trumpets. But like shoes versus boots, both can be worn, but each serves a purpose, and one size does not fit all. Many famous trumpeters outside the symphonies chose other brands, for specific reasons: prime examples are James and Armstrong. Since horns were first used, they have and continue to evolve. Combined with evolving technology, we have more choices than ever before in history. I see the Callet, Curry, etc, as part of the continuing evolution and am happy for it: we may be now in a golden age. Would I choose a Callet? Will not know until I try. I shall keep an open mind and ear.

Hello Ralph, I just found this video. Hope all is well.
I have some experience with Bach. Back in high school and college (1980-86) I used a Bach 1-1/2C. At the time the trumpets ran $900 and the mouthpieces $35.
When I restarted working on the trumpet in late 2020 I had used a cheap brand. I did notice that the Bach mouthpieces didn’t go up in price at the same rate as the trumpets.
One change I did was going to a 1E. It made F, F# and G above high C stronger than with the 1-1/2C.
The main thing I’d say is that Bach is OK for the price, but better mouthpieces will be higher.
Is there a source for the Callet mouthpieces you recommend? I’d be curious on checking out the information.

Picked up my trumpet after 20 years of no playing. I have an assortment of Bach pieces including 7C, 3C megatone, 3C, 1C. When I played in high school I struggled like mad to hit a double D and never tried anything in performance above that.
I ordered a Kelly screamer and within two weeks was hitting a double G with 1/4 of the effort or less than a Bach.
Suddenly all the years of instruction about opening the throat and using 3 compressions made sense because it works on a Kelly, but I have to clamp down on the embouchure and push huge volumes of air with Bach pieces.
I would say that if you can’t blow whistle notes at super soft volume then reconsider your piece.

If anyone believes that those exercises at the end were played to the best of this guys ability you are just kidding yourself. If someone has a lot of talent which this guy seems to have by what he played in the beginning of the video it should not sound so different when switching mouthpieces. Winton Marsalis once did a class where he cleaned everyone’s mouthpieces in the room then went down the line playing an excerpt from carnival of Venice and it sounded nearly identical every time. He played of Shilkies, jet tones, bachs, Yamaha’s, etc. no matter what he played it always was the same. That was faked simply to make Bach mouthpieces sound worse than they really are.

Ralph? I didn't mean to start an argument, just to say that the world of trumpeting should be big enough for everyone. As a matter of fact. I was a music major 49 years ago in Ohio and dropped out of school. Played, took lessons into adulthood from a couple men I trusted. Played in two different municipal bands, churches, brass quintets, etc. I just enjoyed music. Dropped the playing about 18 years ago and am just picking it up at 67 to enjoy again. I had a Bach 3c mouthpiece in a drawer that I put on a Pfund trumpet I bought slightly used, as I didn't know how my attempt at playing again would go. I am truly open to trying anyones mouthpiece, especially if I could find one to address my rebuilding the embouchure. Lower register is a struggle but I am making progress. I am never playing Haydn, Hummel, or any Clarke solos again! LOL but if you know of a mouthpiece that is relatively deep and may aid in feeling stronger as I try to build the musculature around the lip again, I am all ears. Hi @TruePowerTrumpet! I found this video interesting because I've always had trouble in the upper register on Bach and when you pointed out the fact of pulling something in your throat, I was like "whoa maybe I should try something differently". What mouthpiece brands would you suggest? I'm a Trumpet player in college marching band. I am playing first trumpet this year for our show. Our band is the closest college band to DCI. I would appreciate your thoughts on this! Thanks again.

I'd say Bach mouthpieces work pretty well if you aren't playing above a high D. My alternative is a Kelly Screamer which reduces the strain in the upper register by a lot but it feels awkward for lower notes. I will say do NOT use a Bach 3C or similar sizes for big band lead playing (unless you count middle or high school where notes rarely if ever go above a high C) or even 2nd trumpet in a big band. They work somewhat decently as 3rd or 4th trumpet I guess.

its like a return on investment in my opinion. its equivalent would be muscle development,,; does NOT happen over night but after effect speaks for itself for better or for worse. in my prime i was able to play pedal C to double G first notes of the day (didn't have a need any higher). granted, now, after a 8 year hiatus and starting from square one, i had to deal with a *horrendous* double buzz and i don't doubt its the mouthpiece (3C) but a few months of drilling everyday for an hour and its a thing of the past. dont get me wrong, im very careful with my approach with a almost paranoia of letting myself develop bad habits, but i am playing the standard range free of issues. i don't doubt the video,, but i dont doubt my education either. you just have to be very careful about the habits you create.

I was practicing in one of the storage rooms in my high school and I noticed a bunch of different mouthpieces and they were mostly like 7c and 5c and then there was one that stood out. It was a yamaha 11b4. I tried it out and I loved it. I had a bach 3c and I hated the tone of it. Bad tone and it wore my lips out so quickly. I even switched to a 7c to try out for District Honor Band just because of the tone and lip endurance issues. I was just able to get a decent double C out it. It felt like I had to work so damn hard, like I was fighting with it to make it work, but I made the band :D - I tried the 11B4 and it was similar to a 7c with a shallower cup and it was some much better. It just had a brighter and punchier tone and the upper register was much easier to play and didn't wear my lips out like the 3c. Not gonna like I just swapped my mouthpiece out for it.

Funny thing about this system of playing is that it's starting to cross over into my low brass playing.
I also have a flugelhorn where I use a very deep cup where playing above a G was near impossible, but the deeper mouthpiece made the sound worth it.
This system has quite suddenly put almost an octave on my flugel playing with the same mouthpiece.

I’m a 16 year old trumpet player & I’ve been playing for about 4 or 5 years now; though I’m not too old, I play with a lot of professional musicians around my town. In the gigs we play, one of the players I admire most (jim gilmartin) plays on a Bach 3C and his sound in the upper register is g o r g e o u s ! I normally play on an Artisan 1 1/4 C, so I start having trouble after the overtone E, but i believe that’s because of my young, relatively inexperienced chops/lungs! though I will agree that Bach mouthpieces aren’t my choice for lead playing (I use a Monette Resonance Prana B6LDS1/82P) they’re still a viable option for those who can’t afford a $350+ mouthpiece for all registers!

I love youtube. Now, everyone that ever sat 3rd chair in the local muni can slam or down deride any equipment on the market. I have never had a Bach trumpet because I always felt like they were either restrictive in the upper or lower register. I have played Bach mouthpieces not exclusively, but a quiet a bit of the time. Also, Schilke, Jet Tone, etc. The Bach 1c has been comfortable for me and I still have one. If your aim is to play double C get a shallow mouthpiece or play what you play and work your ass off doing lip flesibilities to build your register. Interesting what he says, but your ax is one thing and the mouthpiece is another (albeit" a damn important thing.

There are many top trumpeters that play BACH mouthpieces. Especially in these sizes. 1 1/4c, 1X, 3c, 3b, 5c, 10 1/2c.

    Bach? Horrific endurance.
    Schilke? Stuffy pinched sound.
Callet: Nice sound but the plating wore off in a month.
Monette: Oh yes. That’s the ticket.

Why are people thumbing this down? It's so true...Do you all like drum brakes and no power steering on your cars too? Good video! Bravo! They are a huge reason young trumpet players get frustrated with the horn.
