    Hi, Richard. I've always cleaned the lens of my expensive Leica bins (binoculars) and Questar telescope with cotton-wool balls and distilled water. Make sure that the cotton-wool is 100% cotton (with no man-made fibres in its make up). I've owned my equipment for 33 years now and the lens elements are in the same condition as when new. Blow off the dust, just as you suggest, then use a wet cotton-wool ball to wipe the lens before drying it with a dry cotton-wool ball. Cheap, easy and very effective. This advice was given by the makers of my telescope, Questar.

      Hi there Alan, thanks very much for watching and the advice on how you carry out your cleaning on your optics, nice to see how others go about it. I must admit I take great care of my equipment so it lasts and performs the best way possible. All the best R 👍

      @@RichardBirchett Thaha, really? You r very welcome. Even I only have Tamron lenses, they were expensive enough I find. It is only sensible to protect them as best as I can. And if you don't blow up your images into poster size, why bother about the filter? :D Chris

    Love the video Richard, I think the most important tip is to take the blower out with you. How often are you tempted to wipe away that spec of dust while out in the field. It only needs to be sand once to ruin your day, week month...year!! With a blower you can remove it easily without the potential for scratching the glass.👍

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Scott, You are so right! Very important as its always sop tempting to just wipe it off and then! Disaster happens.... Congratulations on passing 1K Subscribers, well deserved. All the best R :-) 👍

    Hey Richard, Great video reminding one to keep their gear clean. I to don't like the idea of cleaning the sensor myself. it's funny you share this now... I have two spots on mine that needs attention but hate the idea of being without one of my cameras while it's off getting a makeover! lol It's always fun seeing what you will share with us. As always... Sayin' hey. Greg

      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Greg, thanks for checking in on this Vlog, not for all but like you say a good reminder to keep the gear in tip top condition. I never bother touching the sensor unless I was detached away quite remote, I have peace of mind knowing that the professionals do a great job! Good having two bodies so I am never without a camera! Thanks again my friend, all the best

    Good advice & a clear practical demonstration 👌Like the look of that large cloth you recommend - thanks for providing the link in your post.
    Quick question - electrical contacts on lens & body. Tiny spot of cleaning fluid on cotton bud & very gently wipe or not?
    Keep the vlogs coming mate. Always good to watch your channel 👍

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Adrian, thanks for watching and commenting it really is appreciated, probably not a Vlog for all but I hope it did the trick as cleaning kit can sometimes be daunting for the beginner. The Sylvet cloth is really good, forgot to say just pop it in the washing machine to give it a clean and you are good to go again. You can clean the contacts with Isopropyl Alcohol fluid dabbed on a cotton wool bud, or the end of a chop stick with a PecPad or clean cleaning cloth at the end to get right into the contacts, lightly applied. I just give them a wipe without and it does the trick. Hope that helps. All the best R

  • @beyondyourbackyardadventur3089

    Thank you for the info, Richard! I definitely needed this as I am always worried about doing unnecessary damage while cleaning. How often(or not often!) do you send the body out for a sensor cleaning?

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks very much indeed but I thought its something not that many cover and was asked by a few how I cleaned my kit. I send my Cameras off to Canon or Fixation for sensor cleans and service... As required, plus I send off my Prime lens for calibration from time to time. All the best R

    All good stuff, Richard. As you say, as and when is a good tip, although lens coatings are much more durable and forgiving these days. 👍🏻

      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Steve, I wasn't sure this Vlog would really gain much interest but I've had a few people ask about how I clean my gear, so I thought why not! Really appreciate your comments, and yes much better coatings nowadays :-) All the best R :-)

    I started using lens protectors but gave up with them due to a hit on image quality which was more noticable when I went from a 22mp camera to 30mp camera. I've not used them since although certain Canon L series lenses require them to become shower proof.

    It's often the easy stuff that gets neglected, very important to keep you lens clean especially shooting into the sun. I use a lens pen with the brush and then cleaning pad while out in the field! 👍

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 3 lety

      Thanks very much for watching, it really is isn't it! I must admit I'm a lot happier when I know they are all good to go. Thanks for your information, I have used a pen before and find them very good, especially when out and about. All the best R :-)

    How does one reach the back glass of a tele lens? It's pretty deep inside and isn't reachable with an ear bud. Not even with a Lenspen. Do I make a longer earbud? Problem is with leverage and moving it around inside.

    • @RichardBirchett
      @RichardBirchett  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Hi there and thanks for watching. I now use a mini hoover to suck out any dust and inspect it with a magnifier to see if anything persists on the glass, if it's clear all good. If not I'd take it to be done at Canon or an approved dealer just to be on the safe side. Cheers Rich 👍
