Railwaymen in general, and drivers in particular, are the most competent and conscious “blue-collar” workers in industry. Right up there with experienced teachers or even paramedics. Some manage to carry on working after the trauma of a death due to their equipment, others just die. They are as responsible as airline pilots, and their trains are just as lethal as an aircraft. It’s deplorable that drivers now get no compensation for damage done to their emotional, mental or physical health, owing to the actions of other people.

It can't be helped. So they have counseling departments and they pay for any additional counseling a person might want or need after such an event. Which I guess is a good thing. I'm not sure if many people can fully understand what train drivers go through when the train they are driving hits someone, whether it be accidental or a suicide.
That's not to say that I do, but I've tried to get my head around it.
When I was at school an acquaintance took his life this way, and even though it was a commuter train, and about half a mile from the station, (therefore not travelling at a significant speed) it still struck him with enough force that he was found almost 100m away from the impact*.
This obviously must have been enormously traumatic for the driver, and that's before discovering that it was a 15year old taking his own life.
I hate to use the term "selfish" when talking about someone taking their own life, but it is - the train driver is a very unwilling participant in the act - they cannot swerve, nor can they brake in a short distance, so they just have to accept that is happening - a horrific predicament to find yourself in.
*The British Transport Police and the Procurator Fiscal, (equivalent to the Coroner in Scotland) had a good idea of what had occurred, because tragically he did it in front of a friend.
In my teens there were four suicides of lads that I knew, to varying degrees.

It's not just the drivers. The driver gets it first, then the Network Rail guys (and girls) and the RAIB people, out on the tracks picking up the bits and then the Depot Techs who have to clean and repair the train (a smell you never forget I'm told) after that. And not forgetting the Emergency Services people or any of the general public who happen to witness it. It's possibly the most selfish way there is to take your own life. It impacts on so many others.
I know that the person taking their own life isn't in a good place and probably doesn't even consider the impact on others, their own health drives their actions. It would be really good it Governments started taking mental health seriously. The HSE in the UK have already said that mental health is going to be the biggest killer in industry with a few decades.

what was that about the exclusion of train drivers? does that mean they have to seek their own therapy and healthcare? Is there something the public can do to help overturn this?

Forty two years ago a friend of mine from high school jumped in front of the subway train in Toronto Canada. I would get chills every time I went through that stop. They said she jumped, I don’t know if that’s what is truth. A few weeks ago a whole bunch of us and she had such a great time, so many laughs. We didn’t see that something was bothering. Of course, you never know behind closed doors what really goes on🥺😔😢. May you rest in peace Debbie✝️❤️💐🕊

I have a friend who works as a train driver. One day there were workers on the tracks. Then there was a train coming from the wrong direction, on the wrong track, where a worker worked. I don´t wanna tell details. But for train driver who experiences an accident or is forced to see suicide, their lives change forever.

Incredibly moving film, tackling a subject which rarely gets the attention it deserves.
The statistics at the end were sobering and while it’s not at all surprising that the Tories cut these benefits, it makes my blood boil.

I totally understand the posttraumatic stress syndrome I have it from something else happening to me but I remember being in London on my way to the Vidal sasooned academy just my every day ride to the class, all the sudden we stopped not abruptly but then it took a while before we start it up again because they had to clean up a body, it totally upset me being an American not that we don’t have suicide here and a lot of bad stuff but just the thought of being on the train that ran over someone brought me to tears.

I live near the tracks, like 3 blocks away. I grew up hearing how reckless people are at railroad crossings. For example, people would wait on the tracks for the train to pass. That place used to be a yard, so it has multiple tracks and it is not really predictable, because the train changes tracks. So you see a train using the furthest left track, and suddenly it changes to the furthest right. People, instead of waiting behind the barriers, will wait on the track they think the train is not going to use. I remember my aunt saying "you have no idea how many people I had to tell to move from there and stay behind the barriers, even ladies with prams". I can´t even think what the driver feels when they see this situation.

I have seen a young man (Under 20 i estimate) jump off a railway platform as the train pulled in giving the driver no time to stop & avoid him & i saw his body get cut in thirds by the trains metal wheels & it's something i will never forget. The effect it has on the drivers must be monumental & almost life altering.
Have you ever wondered why all these suicides never make it to the TV news is that if someones suicide is on TV then others will do it as well for the attention of others.
I understand that there are many reasons why a person will commit suicide but ultimately it is a selfish act with no consideration for the others who are left behind to pick up the pieces & organise the funeral costs & wonder "Why" for the rest of their lives.
